FZR help for dad.

Last year after both of my brother's cars died and he had just had a baby my parents bought a new car for my bro and his wife but he had to agree to turn over all his bikes to my parents as payment. My dad became the owner of a CR250, KDX250, and a '95 FZR 600.

My dad has been able to sell all but the FZR. After sitting all winter my dad says it will now start up and idle very smoothly (at 1000 rpm) but if he tries to give it any throttle at all it just immediately dies. He says it doesn't matter if he tries to give throttle fast or slow it always chokes out and dies immediately. He says that it will always restart just fine. However, if he pulls the choke out and artificially brings the idle up past about 1500rpm he can then rev it up at will. My guess is 1. that the idle should be higher anyway, 2. that there are still other carb adjustments needed, maybe some low-speed richening? Dad is really mechanical but has never worked on a multi-cylinder bike before, I'm not much help since my bikes have all been FI and I'm 1500 miles away.

Does anyone have any thoughts or know where the idle speed adjustment is at on an FZR?

How long did it sit without being started? Sounds to me like the carbs need cleaned (more than likely the pilot jets are plugged up).

Is it okay to just spray carb cleaner in there or do they need to come off the bike? It sat all winter and most of last summer. It was being ridden regularly up until then. It did get started every now and then last summer and a couple times in the fall but wasn't ever actually ridden.

Spraying carb cleaner does nothing unless you're spraying it THROUGH a pilot jet, which you need access to. That means at the minimum removing the float bowls. However, I HAVE heard really good reports on some stuff made by Yamaha that works like an injector cleaner that you just dump in the tank. I would try that route first if the bike hasn't been sitting that long, worst case scenario is that you're out the minimal $$$ you spent on the cleaner. You might also try Seafoam.

My first bike that I bought was an 89 FZR600 that had sat, and had that exact problem.

Carbs need come off, be fully disassembled and cleaned thoroughly. I had to replace the float valves too.

I have gone through this with a variety of bikes.

If your dad doesn't feel comfortable going through the carbs, he might be able to find an independent mechanic that will go through them if he brings the carb bank in.

Still might be worth a shot to try the stuff Evl recommended, though I have never found anything that worked satisfactorily.

I guess we'll start with the chemical method because he doesn't want to put much into a bike that probably won't sell for more than $2300.

I would get a fresh tank of gas (drain what is in there) put some cleaner in it and let it idle for a long while occasionally trying to get up on the midrange and main jets. Much cheaper to try and it will not make it any worse.

I'll confess that the couple times I've had this problem that I've been lazy and got away with just riding the thing until it cleared up (drain whatever fuel is in there and start fresh). Sometimes it's bad enough that this won't work, but I've been lucky.

to luvto and the good Dr. I had a '95 Fizzer and my issue was the floats stuck in the bowls. So long as the jetting is still stock, it's a fairly simple carb to clean and rebuild. Getting them synched was a little issue (for me that is) due to the tight space inside the frame and my lack of experience at the time.

I also may have some left over stock pieces from mine in the tool chest. If you're interested, I'll find out what I have and you can have them for whatever it costs them to ship. I haven't any need for them, and they could sure use a good home. I think there might even be the stock ECU from where I bought a PowerPak.
