Bike won't start

I went to start the triumph today and it would barely turn over. I just rode it a week ago and no issues. I hooked the battery tender up, but it kicked over to trickle pretty quickly so I just assumed I had a battery that was no good anymore. I went and got a new one... same thing, checked the charge on that one as well and it is ok.

Will a dead/dying starter sound like the engine will barely turn over? I guess I need to haul the thing down to the dealer in g-boro

Re: Bike won't start

Yes a bad starter will give the same symptoms as a dead battery. But I would be more inclined to think it would be a loose connection somewhere rather than a bad starter given the age of the bike. A loose connection costs less to fix than a starter.

Did you charge the new battery before trying to start the bike? Some batteries off the shelf have low voltages.

But it is a Triumph... It also has a two year warranty thank goodness...

I tried jiggling things... no go. The lights and everything else come up bright and just fine... just turning over the motor is very sluggish.

Re: Bike won't start

We have had a couple of electrical problems on my son's @004 Daytona 955.
Rectifier/regulator went bad at about 1000 mi and AGAIN at 5600 mi and about 8 months later.
The dealer replaced the part under warranty both times. The main wiring harness was getting extremely hot near the fuse block. The dealer could not find a problem. We opened up the harness and inspected it, couldn't find any obvious problems, and grounds were all clean and tight. We ended up replacing 2 crimp connectors in the main supply wire with solder joints and it seems to be ok now.
The ghost of the prince of darkness must still haunt Triumphs!

What symptoms will a bad regulator rectifier give?

On Corey's bike the batt would get slowly weaker. It would crank slower each time it was started. We charged several times and it would last awhile before it got toa noticable point. It finally got to the point the bike would shut down if he road it too far. (good thing for Dad, the trailer man! twice.)
We found with the faied reg/rect his bike would charge slightly at low speed, then drop off to discharge after about 3000rpm. Weird.
I am not sure that this is your problem based on the symptoms you described.

Re: Bike won't start

If your batt is fully charged (do you have a charger besides the tender, btw?) I would suspect either bad connections, either at the batt, starter, solenoid, or ground. If not that, then the starter itself is a possibility.
I would deffinatly get it to the dealer, you want to have the paper trail no matter if they find a problem or not.

ok, that was a visual I did not need...

I took the bike to the dealer today and dropped it off. I'm on vacation this coming week so they have plenty of time to fix it and do the recall(s).

Re: Bike won't start

ok, something is bad wrong with it... loss of compression. They got that far then stopped to ask me what the speedohealer is. They though it was a fuel management system.... So they will be doing lots of tests. They accused me of modding the shit out of it and asked why the rear cowl had a melted spot. They told me they thought I let it sit around running by itself and also of taking it to the track. I must say, I don't like being accused of this sort of thing... The bike is stock... Sheesh. We'll see what happens. Thank god for a 2 year warranty.

I thought a Speedohealer was a preacher with quick healing power. Am I wrong?
