Good for Triumph!

That is a very nice bike. I ought to stay on the lookout for a salvage title one for the track..

It's good for a Brit to see that name coming up in such a competition.

Re: 675 Named IBOTY (International Bike of the Year)

Yesterday we had a Triumph Demo Day at our Triumph/BMW dealer.
I had planned to get a ride on a Tiger and a 675, but there were so many people there I only got one chance. I took the 675 because I know I can get a demo on the Tiger later on the dealerships bike. They are a lot more restrictive about who rides the 675, they usually want a deposit first on that one. Though they may get more liberal, they have 4 sitting on the sales floor now...
Anyway, we went out on a approx 10 mile ride with lead and tail control riders. Didn't get to do much "sport" riding (obviously), I went above 2nd gear only to verify the shifting, which was very smooth and light, btw.
We did go down a 2 mile road that has 6 sets of S curves that are pretty tight. Yes this is the equivalent of the Dragon's Tail here! Except it is in a residential neighborhood (of course), so no speedy stuff. You can go through the corners at a fairly good clip, and the lead rider (on a Tiger) did so. I was directly behind him. The 675 was not fazed, has a lot more potential than I could tap, even on a track. But here is my report such as it is:
The main thing I have to compare this bike to is the race prepped CBR600RR I rode back from Labelle a couple of weeks ago. The 675 felt slightly more narrow and responsive to inputs than the Honda. The suspension was not as stiff, but it was stock and not adjusted for my heavier than target weight. The triple makes a lot more bottom end power. It feels like it pulls as hard as my 929 from 3K to 6 or 7K. A much more linear delivery, sort of like a mini version of my sons 955 Daytona. I didn't get much above the 11k range, but it seemed to start to scream then, just as I had to get out of it. Very cool triple intake and exhaust sound track!
In the turns I noticed something odd. The bike responds very quickly and really drops into lean angle fast, like the CBR, but as I got fairly low (for me ), It felt like the front tire was going to "wash out" (my term for the way it feels when a MX front tire lets go in a soft sand turn). It was not very confidence inspiring. I don't know if this was a set up, or tire issue, or whether it is inherent and something you get used to. Seemed to be constant in every corner. The guy behind me (an R1 owner) on a Speed Triple described his bike doing the same thing.
So from that short experience I would say that personally, I would probably go with the Triumph because of the engine characteristics, if the suspension were able to be tuned to something like that of the CBR. And I would imagine that with a bit of cash that would be no problem. My choice at this point though will be affected by the availability of cheaper already set up 600's.

Re: 675 Named IBOTY (International Bike of the Year)

I wonder if that 'about to wash out the front' feeling is due to the tires? The 675 comes with pirelli supercorsa's, right? A slow 2 mile ride isn't going to get them up to temp IMO.

Re: 675 Named IBOTY (International Bike of the Year)

From what I can see, the 675 has 86.8 mm of trail, compared to a 600RR's 95.0 mm (2006) or 96.3 mm (2007). Less trail means less "feel", translating into that sinking feeling that the front is going to tuck.

Re: 675 Named IBOTY (International Bike of the Year)

Nice review, LL. Those are sweet bikes, and were at or near the top of my list before buying my CBR600RR. It will also be interesting to see what their long-term reliability is like.

Hmmm, that is a possibility. I noticed it more in the first turn, just figured I was getting used to it.

What does the term "tuck" mean?
As pertaining to Motorcycle frontends, not some plastic surgery procedure, or something even weirder. Who knows what members here will come up with...

This is a tuck.

You can see here that the front tire has lost the plot and is skating around, completely out of line and sync with the rear tire and the frame direction.

In this case, the front of the bike traversed a few feet toward the outside of the turn as my life passed before my eyes and my breakfast... never mind. No fall, no harm, and I got rid of those tires immediately.

Good pic from Karoline Sheldon of Fotomadness.com.

Did you get the stains completely out of those custom leathers?!

What kind of tires? Were they shot or just crap to begin with? Inquiring minds need to know!

There is an easy fix for that which I've done on mine. Lower the forks so the tops are flush with the triples. Most of lowered the rear a notch as well.

It sounds like this would be fixed with custom offset triples?

I really like that bike. Especially that Triumph said screw the 600 class and set off to build their own idea of a great bike.

Nice write-up leelover. These guys seem to agree with you:

Very nice looking bikes, they always grab my attention.

Fantastic exhaust note too.

There are a number of people racing these - If they're not going the custom triples route, it can probably be mitigated with set up and suspension upgrades. I really like that bike as well, and love to see that company try to regain some of the old racing glory.

GMD Computrack Boston actually makes such a thing for the 675.

It's one of those things I got used to, but I've knwon several people who've raced them and complained of the problem when really "pushing it".
