    Tire WARNING!

So I am not positive where this belongs but I think it should be a sticky:

Again this weekend I got a confirmation of my golden rule for tires on track days:

If you are questioning whether your tires are good for one more session they are NOT. In my experience 100% of people that I saw questioning their tires crashed in that one session (sadly this weekend was my neighbor in the pits and I did not see him questioning so I could not persuade him to stop). So trying to get that one more session out of a tire they caused damage to the bike that in some cases exceeded tires AND still needed tires Not to mention personal risk (thankfully I have not seen injuries from this)

A little math that you can plug your number into if you want:

Assume tires are $300 a set and last 4 days at 7 sessions.
    300 / (4 * 7) = $10.71 per session
    Assume a $205 day with 7 sessions
    205 / 7 = $29.28 per session

Or approximately $40 you are trying to save

So if you question your tires this year CHANGE them or sit out. It makes sense financially and more importantly your hide.

    Re: Tire WARNING!

    Heh. Sage advice.

I've always followed it myself until my last race.

I was at Thunderhill which is brutal on the left side of the tire. Of course, there is an off camber right hand corner too.

Anyway, since it was the last race, I just flipped the rear slick. First time into the right hander, turn 3, I was very um...stylish.

I crept around the rest of the race posting a miserable result, but with an intact bike.

    Never again...

    Re: Tire WARNING!

Sunday I ran a set of 208gpa's that were questionable of sorts. Previous cold tearing evidence and almost to the wear bars. Done 3 good sessions with them as well as several sessions in the wet. Had a couple of slides with the rear and was able to recognize that the tires were telling me something and backed off. It is really the riders ability to listen to what the bike is telling you and use your best judgment.
