Private track time

Why? Because I can. And because I received an invite and I'd thought I share. Besides, who doesn't like to see some "ego shots?" I know I do.

About the track: It is a closed loop, 0.7 mile track that can be run in any direction. There are approximately 7 turns with two chicanes. Some guys out there count it as 10, but really it has 7 turns.

It's width doesn't really allow for any passing, save for the front straight. Though with considerable skill, or a Motard - one can pass. I never did pass anyone as they are pretty stern on safety. Run-off is all dirt or weeds. No real racing takes place out there. But I hear that there is a crew of guys that run their Motards pretty fiercely against each other.

Unfortunately, I can't really say where the track is located. The land owner and constructor, along with the operators have asked me to keep pretty low key because of the city it is located in. Think Berkeley of the Rocky Mountain West. More simply; they want to avoid a lot of attention for fear of noise, pollution, or any other communistic, hair-bagger, greenie BS.

I was able to spend two days out there on the (new-to-me) 929. The track is so short and tight that I was only really able to run the bike in first gear, getting up to second on the straight before some rear-wheel-in-the-air braking into a decreasing radius turn. Some of the re-geared 600's can run it up to third on the straights. But since my 929 is still stuck with stock gearing (and I have the torque), it was in 1st for me!

Now for the eye candy!

Feel free to lay down waves of criticims, thunderous approval or general tips, tricks and comments on technique. Ok, maybe it mostly the latter ...

Wow. A private track.. failed attempt at a development?

You *might* want to think about those excessive lean angles (looking at pic #4)- with more of your body off the bike, you could keep it a bit more upright, stay off the edge of the tire and thus have more traction.. and margin for error.

Looks fun as hell, though.

Especially being in first gear on a 929.

Nope. It was built with the intention of being a private track that wanted something in the town he lived in. He also owns the land it sits on.

I used this weekend to work on a lot things like lean angle and body position. Towards the end of Sunday, I found just what you said - more body off (in the right way) = better turn in quicker times.

You'd think. However, due to the tightness and shortness of this track, this wasn't the case. If anything, it forced one to really be mindful of throttle control. Really, you had to lean to get around this sucker faster than some of the Motards. It is that tight. Long story short; this track is much better suited to 600's and super singles (or smaller Smokers).

Also forgot about these "ego shots" that I took after the weekend:

#2 is the left puck, which saw more tarmac due to my body position and the track.

#3 is of course the right. For whatever reason, I had a little tougher time getting it done - even though we ran the track in both directions.

Actually, there was a guy out there on a little Kawi that had all sorts of bits. I think it was some little 50 that he'd bored out or something. It was pulling past some stock 125's. He chased me all day ... except for the straight.

Hahaha. He was actually standing on a table in the background with his leathers around his waist, giving him the appearance of having a 'big back yard'.

Ok, I'll be the bad guy... How far "out there" is it, and how far away is medical help if something bad were to happen?

No. But I see that you've heard of this place. Care to share your story?

You're not being the bad guy ...
Not very, and
Not very.

There's a fire station probably two blocks away. Help is close.

Looks like it would be quite a lot of fun on a supermoto bike for sure!

I think some guys I know from Idaho might have been there before a few years back, but i've never been. I did find a video on Google that seems to refer to it:

That's it! They are running in the "forwards" configuration. Backwards is much more fun!

You can see coming out of what's called "The Hole" with those little hills how you can power wheelie - even on a stock 600.

The second lap, I hammered the throttle out of the hole and pulled a GIGANTIC power wheelie. I scared the piss out of myself for a second, then grinned stupidly the rest of the weekend every time! That's when I knew I'd love my 929 forever!

Way cool. When I was younger I used to sketch my dream property. It included a road course with the straight doubling the landing strip for my Cessna. I haven't won the lottery yet so I'm not holding my breath on that one.

that's my dream for sure. starts off, win lottery, buy a huge tract of land, build my own race track, figure out some kind of way to call emergency crew if I crash, ride all day every day. and you all can come and ride for free

Maybe we should start a lottery pool or ticket buying system. That way, we can all have better chances of winning!!
