My Turn

13 years of track riding and 25+ years of street riding with no incidents, so I was starting to think perhaps my luck and/or skill would continue and I'd never crash. Well, that's over. I lowsided at the track today. Last lap of the first session. I'm fine, the bike is ok, rode it back to the pits, sat out a session, tightened the footpeg up, and went back out, albeit 6-10 seconds off my times there from last month. Damn, I was starting to make some good progress there. No real damage. Some scrapes, but everything is functional. I'll replace a footpeg and a frameslider puck. Helmet, too. I don't think I smacked my head on the ground, but I did tumble and there's a quarter-sized scrape on the helmet. Probably best to just replace it. All-in-all, it could have been a lot worse. The pavement in that turn has gotten considerably worse than last month, and I was experimenting with taking it in 3rd gear instead of 2nd, so I got less engine braking than I was used to, which startled me a bit the first couple of laps, but then seemed ok. I must've either rolled off just a bit mid-turn, or else didn't have good maintenance throttle, and the front just tucked. That's as best as I can figure out what I did wrong, aside from just not feeling comfortable and focused. I know I just don't want to do that again!

I'm glad you're OK. If you're going to crash, that's the way to do it.

glad ur okay.

About 2 weeks before each of my trackdays, I get these weird omens about my street riding. So much so, that I usually stop riding for those 2 weeks. Hearing about you and Brett is giving me an early onset of my pre-track jitters.

So sorry to hear about this, but glad it wasn't any worse. I know the feeling, and I hate it. It's so shocking, so wrong. I'm sure you'll bounce back, though, and be better and wiser. I wish you all the best as you continue the process of "getting back on the horse."

I am sorry to hear about your intimate meeting with the tarmac, but I'm glad you are okay. Please take care to avoid this sort of activity in the future. Thank you.

Sounds like no big deal other than the helmet You can send it off to get checked but I would not bother from the description. If you have to crash that is the way, little damage, in a safer environment, with safety crew and no injury Now wait 25 more years to repeat

"So wrong" is a good way to describe it. I'm standing there looking at my bike on it's side, leaking fuel. Looks so wrong that way, and the first time I've seen my bike that way. Then later I dropped it on the same side taking it out of the Baxley chock, which I've never done before either. Just a crappy day all the way around!

I remember the first time I crashed at NHIS. As I was sliding on my backside heading toward the Jersey barrier I distinctly remember three things:
- So this is what that feels like...
- I wonder how hard the bike is going to hit the wall.
- Is Kim getting any photos of this? (she didn't)

Glad to hear you're ok!

Always the photographer! Yeah, at least where I went down had decent run-off and a sand trap. Which, was a bit muddy from the previous weeks' rain. I had to nearly be hosed off!

Glad you're alright, HG2. At least you got both drops out of the way at the same time. It would have sucked to get everything fixed then drop it.

Oh nooo! So sorry to hear it finally caught up with you, too. Thankfully you and the bike are okay. Sounds like you didn't dwell on it too long...sometimes you just have one of those days.

Thanks! Yeah, later on one of the guys pitted next to us came over and asked if anything got damaged when it fell over. I laughed and said I didn't know, as I'd lowsided on that side earlier in the day.

I sincerely hope it was just "one of those days". My biggest concern is that it will now happen more frequently as I attempt to pick up the pace again. If I ever get the guts to wick it up again, that is...

I understand your concern (and can relate), but really believe that by learning what to do to help avoid it, that it doesn't have to happen. I know too many fast people (way faster than me) who almost never crash, that help inspire me to believe it's possible for me as well.

right when I read the title I knew what it was gonna be about. Sorry to hear but glad you're ok. now the 2 of us just need to relax go work on the bikes and get them all nice again for Grattan.

This is turning into another one of those years where everyone starts going down. but hey at least we're all doing it at the track and not suffering much damage.

Summit Point Main. The surface is considerably worse than it was when I was last there on May 2nd. It's a nice course, too bad they didn't appear to repave it properly. Turn 1 (where I fell) is back to being a "follow the leader" turn. I noticed later in the day that everyone was going through there slower than I'd have thought. (I'm not using that as an excuse. My fall, like most, was operator error). The left leading into the carousel is bumpy again, too. Turn 6 in the carousel has a hole, and I felt like I was slipping in Turn 10. I think it looked like there was some sealer or something there. So much for the nice repave they did there last fall...
In turn 1, the decent line is to really square it off, staying way on the inside, with your cases over the curbing. Some would say cases over the grass. A bit wider than that (I think where I was) it's really bumpy. They paved over the concrete patches, so those areas are already getting all chewed up.

That's the same track I crashed at last year before the repave. Turn 7/8 got me. The whole track was crap then but I heard the repave was decent...right after they did it.
