    Re: New 2007 Tundra

No, though that's what Phobe was saying.

If I'm stuck behind a big truck and I want to pass it, I can choose when to get on the throttle.

I just jump on it a second earlier (or drag the brakes, though I don't do that very often).

The actual rate of acceleration, dv/dt, is faster in my diesel than I had in my gas engine Chev when it has some boost.

It's the same when you're in traffic on the highway. You just plan a bit further out in advance, but the truck hauls ass once it's on the boil....you just plan to get it on the boil.

It's the same in my turbo Mustang too...

You know, come to think of it, it's the same in the S2k also...it sucks to roll on the throttle in it in 6th on the freeway, but drop a gear or two and get the S up to 6k when the cams advance, and it's gone.

    Re: New 2007 Tundra

Canadian dealers finally got their first shipment today and I took a 5.7L SR5 Double Cab for a spin.

    First initial impressions:

Very fast but deceptively fast... builds speed very quickly and very quietly, just a muted burble / rumble in the background. Shifts from the 6-speed auto are virtually undetectable even at full throttle acceleration. It doesn't feel like you're going very fast until you look at the speedometer and you're doubling the speed limit.:P

Traction control will allow for some wheelspin... stability control kicks in quick but doesn't make a fuss.

The ride is what surprised me the most. Bumps and hunks of ice on the road that make my Tacoma pitch back and forth and give me an abdominal workout didn't even phase this truck. If I hadn't seen them I wouldn't have known they were there. Silent and solid like a luxury sedan. It doesn't crash over bumps like I'm used to in most trucks. This particular one was just a base SR5 (b package) so it didn't have the off-road package or the 20" wheels. I would expect that either of those options would result in a slightly firmer ride.

Brakes are outstanding. Firm pedal (for a truck) and RIGHT NOW stopping. The ABS goes about its job relatively quietly and calmly, without the typical noise and shuddering.

Interior is comfortable and quiet and BIG. The door panels are vast and the texture of the plastic is a bit cheap-looking, but quality seems good. It feels like you're a mile away from your passenger... not unlike a Hummer in this respect.

Handling is surprising as well, with fairly responsive steering. It handles surprisingly level if you throw it around.

What I don't like about all the hype around the Tundra is that they took FOREVER to make something better. They start trying with the T100 way back then. Now that they FINALLY have something good they brag about it a whole lot....

I'd still would LOVE to have one

If they're going to steal any market share from the domestics they need to have a truck that outperforms them in every way.... and they need to shout it from the rooftops.

We delivered our first fleet unit to an oilfield company today. They are using it as sort of a "pilot" to test the feasibility of switching over all their Ford half-tons.

I've also got a commercial construction company with 8 on order and dozens of quotes out to the oil patch.

This thing will make a damn fine work truck.

We caught a glimpse of spring last week... but it decided to snow 14cm last night. It'll all be melted by tomorrow, then it'll probably snow again, then melt again, then snow again then melt until May-ish.

The demand has outstripped the supply here, so I might have to wait for it to cool down a bit before I take one off the market for myself. If I have to wait for a Tundra I'm gonna try to get an X-Runner. Winter is almost done so I don't need a 4x4, and the low bed height will make loading bikes easy.

In the meantime I'm bagging on a nice black 2006 RSX. Fun little car.

    Re: New 2007 Tundra

When I was down in Louisiana my Dad and I looked at the Tundra and Taco's. He is a height challenged person, even the 2WD is not real forgiving for him as he had to jump in the cab and even then wiggle into the seat to get ready to drive. He told me if he did get that truck he would have to get a milk crate so he would be able to get in it and pull in in the truck with him by a string. The bed height was too high for him as well.

We went over to the taco's and they were still tall and he jumped in but forgot about the low roof height and bumped his head on the railing. That was the end of his test drive, not even leaving the lot. Also the dealers will not even talk about dropping price.

He ended up getting a 2007 Chevrolet 1/2 ton classic

Get a running board step kit for him. An aftermarket kit for tall 4x4s, that just might be the right ticket for him!

He can get in the new one fine, the Tundra sets up higher that the Chevy. His old truck was a chevy so he is used to it. Now the way the Tundra sets is fine for my height.

I gawked one over yesterday, but it's a truck. Even worse, a full sized truck. I tried to muster up the desire to drive one, but there was none.
Looked pretty nice in person, though.

Coming out of the showroom after my test drive there was a Tacoma with the 4 cylinder, 2 wheel drive, and I realized that it would be PLENTY for my needs. It sucks to have to make the smart choice sometimes but I think I'll go go ahead and get the small one. If he can find one the color I want I might go ahead and order it tomorrow.
    Happy wife, happy life.
