Another comparison Acura VS BMW

http://www.trader.ca/powerpage/detai...8&adid=5743102
Acura TL 6spd
or

http://www.trader.ca/powerpage/detai...4&adid=5890918
BMW330XI 6spd

Considering all things like gas mileage, powertrain, warranty, repair costs, insurance etc which would you buy(Just the model of car not those exact ones)

Why?

I may still end up with a Ridgeline, but if I do something like this I can likely buy another bike to tour with too, and that would be a good thing...

Any other suggestions in this range? I need to be able to pull a trailer and drive it year round. Plus leather is a big want. I was thinking a low mileage accord maybe too?

I had really good luck with my WRX, it would haul two bikes on my open 5x8 trailer better than my Jeep Wrangler Sport did. You'd lack the leather with the WRX, but it was a good car.

How was the mileage on it? decent? I have heard that they really suck it back sometimes?
I am a little leary on purchasing one used around here as all the 's drive like they are "rally champs"

If i go this route I'll have a little light weight trailer so I am thinking that I won't be pulling more than 1000LBS.

Re: Another comparison Acura VS BMW

The WRX is rated to tow 2,000 lb. If I remember correctly, I used to get about 22-23mpg beating it around town, and probably around 26 or so on the highway, even pulling a trailer with the AC on. The best I'd ever recorded on a single tank of gas was on a trip to FL in February, I averaged 28.5. As much as I like my truck, I'm seriously considering getting another Scooby, but maybe the Legacy GT instead of a WRX this time. I had a 2002 WRX which was rated at 227hp, the new Legacy GT is already rated at 250, and with VERY minor mods can be brought up to around 300 easily.

The WRX is rated for around 1600lbs I think. A coworker has a Gen 2 Stage 2 and he drives the wheels off the car. He averages 23-25mpg.

The Jetta with the diesel powerplant, look at the towing on that thing, great mileage too.

I wouldn't buy a Bimmer, costs to much to fix, and no matter what peeps tell you, they break down quite a fair bit. Most past BMWers agree with me.

I'd get the Acura between the two - wouldn't even think twice.

We (used to) buy a lot of used BMWs for out used car department... never again. The repair costs have been devastating. Stick with a good old boring Japanese car that costs next to nothing to drive.

Re: Another comparison Acura VS BMW

Hmm interesting.

I was affraid that the BMW would be astronomical for fixing and it appears that I am right...

I was over and looked at a TL today and I KNOW that I would be happy with that. Very nice car.

As for the diesel VW, that option has crossed my mind too, I used my parents last year for a 4000km trip and it was outstanding, just a little small with the guy I ride with(Having the wagon was awesome though)

yeah and the truck is still there too, but I was thinking if I did it this way I would be able to buy a new VFR to tour with.

- decide if you want a car or truck for your next vehicle first. Take $$, emotion, all that shit out of the equation and just think about it first.

Your comparisons tell me that whatever you buy, your going to find a reason to not be happy with it very fast. I don't say this to be a prick, I say it as someone that has bought a good share of new cars and thrown tons of money in the toilet while doing so. Get something that fits your NEEDS (at the end of the day, it's more frustrating to get something that was a needs compromise and a wants haveitall) and start paying it off fast.

Let me also clarify the longest I have ever owned a vehicle for was 2 years, and that was when I had a company ride (as well) that I drove daily and swapped out once in that period as well.

Not trying to tell you how to live mang, just trying to prevent you from making the same mistake I did...several times

It would seem like a good time to throw in a shameless Ridgeline plug here too, but I'll obstain just this once

TL's are a decent car, but the torque steer gets annoying...not sure if it's as prevolent as the older models or if they have some expensive-to-replace-or-fix system that limits it now.

Re: Another comparison Acura VS BMW

Thanks For the insight SSG, trust me I know about buying used cars... I have had 16 cars in the last 10 years of driving... Lots of fun and I have always managed to do pretty well on them. (amazingly enough)

I have just been thinking lately that I miss my prelude and something like that may suit my needs just as well as a truck(thinking that I have done it before with a trailer I can do it again?)

I like feeling out a lot of things before I get into it too deep. truth be told I could be happy with just about anything. i love my 94 lincoln, but she won't pull a trailer...

Just trying to get some background on some different "ideas"

Re: Another comparison Acura VS BMW

I haven't been paying a lot of attention to auto's lately so I don't know how it compares to a TL, but how about an Infinity G35?
My wife had an I30 for almost 200K miles. It was a great car.

Had three 3 Series and absolutely no problems even at 90K (when they were still covered under warranty with the CPO program). They cost me exactly 0.00 dollars to fix over their entire life. Compared to my Nissan and other vehicles, they were cheap to own.

If you haven't noticed, I don't agree with you . . .

My mother in law owns an Acura and it's in the shop at least 4 times a year (when it can make it there). No bargain there.

While I've heard of guys without any problems on their MK4 Golfs, I've fixed mine more times than I care to remember. About the ONLY good thing out of it is that I'm slightly more mechnically inclined.

But the general rule of thumb is that BMW has reliability issue, and even when they don't - if you're not going to DIY, it'll be costly to fix.

So... nyah nyah.

Why don't you just get a cheaper car so that you can also get a cheaper truck and have one of each?

I had my RSX for just about 2 years and we've had the '02 TL for just under that. The TL has 85K on it now and (knock on wood) no problems at all. Eees a good car, mang.

Get an 05 Ram 4x4 single cab and an 03 RSX and call it a day.

Cheaper has crossed my mind that was one of the reasons I was looking at these two cars used. about 20grand less than the ridgeline.

I have to keep my insurance costs in check though, that is a MAJOR consideration. Stupid insurance company...

Both the cars in the links you posted were just under 30 grand. You can get a brand new Ridge for that and probably have a little left over.

Brand new ridge can be had for 26k unless you need the leather and heated seats/sunroof.

*yes-that is US$.
