Day off today so I did a little work on the meat wagon.

    Picked up some hardware... 2 Pingel chocks, 14 feet of e-track, 6 d-rings, a couple of 7/16th Ti-nitride bits, a t30 torx bit, and a bag of self-tapping screws. Spent about $350:

    IMG_2104.JPG

Roughed in 5' lengths of e-track at the front... tacked in with a couple of screws and drilled all the holes. Used lots of oil and took caution not to over-torque... the aluminum floor is only about 1/4" thick:

    IMG_2105.JPG IMG_2108.JPG IMG_2109.JPG IMG_2110.JPG

Mounted up the stays for the first Pingel:

    Voila:

Need to get the 600 strapped in and see where there's enough room left to mount the other chock for the 125.... Gotta pace myself on this and make the project last a few months. Winter sucks!

Looking good, Phobe! Nice project. You're right - winter does suck.

Watch out using the Pingel chock. The rotors on the 929 can come in contact with it. Not sure what size you have on your 600RR.

An ST Stand (or the new Pit-Bull) would be a hot setup in your hauler...

Purpdust has the Pingels in his trailer and we didn't have any issues... they come in three sizes.

I have always used the Pingels without any problem. The standard street size handles the large rotors without any problem. The PW50 size (obviously the ones you purchased ), will contact them easily especially if you don't tie the front end down very tightly.

    Now in stereo

That would be cool but definitely not as practical.

I took Big Bertha on a road trip yesterday, about 300 miles. Used her to move a sofa and bed to my mom's house and pick up my 125. It was sub minus 40 with wind chill and this thing was not really designed for that type of use on the highway IMO. It's got a huge amount of cooling capacity... big rad, big oil cooler, big tranny cooler, big heater core. Presumably to keep it cool during alot of loaded start/stop city runs. At highway speeds in arctic temperatures it wouldn't generate enough heat to warm the cabin adequately. Had to bundle up real good... Also there is no insulation and no weather stripping, so when the wind gusts would come across the road they'd go right through it. With its aluminum body unloaded I don't think it's heavy enough for its cross-section, and cross winds push it around a lot. I came back at night in virtual blizzard conditions with about 3 car lengths visibility. Good thing there isn't any arm rests... I needed both hands on the wheel of that bitch at all times.

Got about 12mpg which I don't think is too bad, and 65mph isn't too much trouble until you have to go up a hill.

sounds like you need a bib for the grill at those temps.

12 mpg is fantastic for something with that frontal area, especially considering the conditions you drove in. I'm ecstatic when I get 15 mpg with my F250 in cold conditions/on winter fuel, and it's a manual 5.4L thats well broken in - 155k miles.

I hope to someday get the Excursion to reach 12 mpg...

When I moved from northern Illinois to the Tampa Bay area long ago, I borrowed a friends retired bread truck step van. 26 footer or so as I remember. Yeah, they are not made for any distance. Reacted to cross winds and passing semi's like a wind surfing board, only with less control.

Might have to get me a Newfoundland Car Bra... That is, a sheet of cardboard tied on with binder twine.

Did some more work on it yesterday... Both bikes and all my gear fit in nicely with a bit of creativity. The next project might be a folding false floor to span the top shelves for a bunk bed. That way when Jessica throws me out I can park down by the river and live in it.

That's what I was going to suggest.

I want an old Cummins, my dad gets 19-20mpg everyday and 15 when it has a 14,000 pound 30 ft horse trailer.

More progress on Big Bertha. Got e-track and chocks in, all my stuff, and now a stereo. I may re-arrange the chocks later for a more convenient layout but it works fine for now.

    Did a bit of decorating:

A local electronics shop had a sale yesterday... Everything you see here for under $300. 2 4-inch and 2 6x9 Alpine speakers, a Pioneer head unit with front auxiliary jack and remote, and boxes for the 6x9s:

    New system

Total invested so far: About $2500

Next: bunk bed and tire/wheel rack

I was thinking about your two hands on the wheel comment. You might want to check the king pins. High mileage vehicles of that type tend to have worn out ones and that would make the steering wander a lot.

I had it checked out... Steering and brakes were passable, so we gave it a tune-up. The rear 2 plugs looked like they had never been changed... a bit of the fender needs to be trimmed away to get at them and this had never been performed... also the plugs looked like little black stumps. So it got 6 new plugs, an air filter, distributor cap and rotor, and an oil change. It's leaking a bit from the cooler lines but for the small amount it leaks it isn't worth doing the work... I'll just carry a few quarts with me.

I would not do that if I were you. The Canadian police are not too understanding when it comes to humor.
