2010: Spring Stimulus Ride - Virtual Whiteboard

2010 Spring Stimulus Ride - or - Addicts Ozark Odyssey

It's never too early too start a ride planning thread, so I'd like to throw out some suggestions for a trip this Spring...

    WHERE:
The Ozarks. The Ozarks - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Home base will be Park Hills Missouri, located approximately 50 miles South of St. Louis. Chosen for cheap lodging, available Mexican food and proximity to the twisty roads crossing the Mark Twain National Forest.
    (See attached Google Erf Placemark)
    Park Hills, Missouri.kmz

    WHEN:
Average temperatures for the area are 75/52 during the middle of May.

    May 15-16 -

    May 22-23 -

(May 8-9 is Mother's Day, and May 29-30 is Memorial Day)

    FORMAT:
Two days of riding in the Ozarks with some Mexican food and BBQ in between. Here is the suggested agenda:

Fri - Travel to Park Hills.
Sat - Ride, returning to P.H.
Sun - Ride, returning to P.H.
    Mon - Travel home.

There will be several loose routes of varying length available, for those choosing to ride a short loop on Sunday morning, and return home that afternoon. Conversely, if you wanted to arrive on Saturday and return Monday, that would work as well. The idea is to be flexible enough to accomodate everyone...

    Alternate Venue:
Obviously, Springtime weather can be a bit volatile. In such a case, the location could be quickly changed to Kentucky, West Virginia, or other spot as needed.
    ************************************************

So that's a starting point...let's get the discussion started, and start marking some calendars...

Too early for me to vote in a poll.

I'm already out the weekend of 15-16 (mah birfday) so the 22-23 slot may have to work. Obviously too far out to commit but I like the thought process...

I've also considered trying to ride to some vintage events (car and m/c) next year. Mid-O, Road America. Any interest in that, as well? A little moto-camping?

I'm in for either weekend, with a preference for whichever can get the most riders.

Besides a new RSV4, what could be a better birfday present than a 4 day trip to the Ozarks...

Having never been there - would it be possible to move home base somewhat to the east, perhaps somewhere in southern IL? A quick glance at a map shows that it would cut about 3hrs of drive time on both legs of the trip, however, I'm not sure what that does to our proximity to the desired riding area.

I'm definitely open to suggestion, but I think it would just add a lot of "average" riding to the beginning and end of the Sat/Sun loops, as well as putting some of the better stuff out of reach on a day ride...

If someone can chime in with some local knowledge here, it would be great...

The terrain map puts ground zero just south of your target, Bake.

I'll be bringing a van (maybe with a trailer too ) so I have no problem going a couple extra easy hours with friends passionately debating the tank range of the 2010 VFR as we run out of fuel in the Chevy.

Especially if it lands us in a legendary section of twisties.

I'm kindasorta counting on you putting my trailer on the hook as you pass through town on Friday...

I've ridden this area a couple of times in the past, and there is some really good stuff down there...especially if you can get within striking distance to Arkansas...

So maybe you and BJG can load into the trailer, and I'll bring along one of the Michigan V4 Koolaid drinkers. That's what I call a carpool! Now if we can just get RedRider to bring the Yukon Valdez with a bike and a passenger, we're close to a minyan.

    MMMM ... Koolaid

I would love to be along, but I need to play that one by ear as the time draws near ... it worked out in October

I'll mark it on the planning calendar. Thanks for starting this as motorcycle withdrawl was dragging on my hard last night.

I'm not a big poster so most of you probably don't recognize me, but I read the boards a lot. I've wanted to take a ride to the east for a long time - I've pretty much only ridden in southern/central California. I've been loosely planning a ride next spring for myself, hoping to get to some places I've never seen before, on or off my bike. Meeting up with some people and having a planned route would be great. I vote for the later weekend, I should be free then.

I'm in. Voted for the second dates because I did not think things out properly, so disregard my vote. Either date(s) would work, but the later date might conflict with another commitment I have that time of the year.

The Ozarks are a great area to ride, but I have not been there for many years, so don't ask me which roads to take! I sure hope this is a go...!

Here's a thought - how about rather than a destination ride, a journey ride. For example - loop one (or more) of the Great Lakes

Just throwin' something out there. I know the "base and shred" approach works well but is there any interest in a sport TOURing ride as opposed to a SPORT touring ride?

May is too early for that. There's still sn*w up there in May.

There are actually a couple of options to this ride that could work for those interested in such a trip...

Fri - Ride to Park Hills. Dinner with the Addicts.

Sat - Ride with an Addicts group, split off at the apogee of their loop, and press on toward the Bull Shoals area.

Sun - An epic trace through Arkansas and back up through Southern Missouri to Park Hills. Dinner with the Addicts.

    Mon - Journey homeward.

While I am most likely going to stay in Park Hills for the duration, I would be more than happy to help with trip planning if there is a group that is interested in this option...

You're probably trying to call Figment or Pete's attention, right? I'm fairly certain I'll be able to make it to the Ozarks, but I'm afraid you'll have to get the likes of Seamus or better to even up my presence.

The second weekend is the weekend before graduation for me so it would work well. At that point I'd be finished with all of my rotations. It was going to be vacation for me anyway. The first weekend would possibly be okay also.

I'll be planning on this...if I don't have to sell bikes for a house downpayment.

Hmmm.... about 11 hours drive/ride away.... could well be possible. That's ensuring the old Viff is ready by then ... the weather's making progress a little slow...
