2008 Hyabusa

Anyone see the minibook on the 2008 Hyabusa that came with the latest issue of SportRider?

Re: 2008 Hyabusa

It does look impressive, and it should put out some serious numbers as well. the author claims he saw a number starting with 2 when they were running the engine on an engine dyno.

In this case you have to rip open the protective wrapper first though.

Actually, I am glad smooth started this thread, I bought the mag, set the Hay-bus part down and forgot about it! I will have to read it now. It looks pretty impressive at a glance. The styling is recognizable, but sleeker and more up to date. It has a 3 position switchie on the right bar ala 07 GSX-R 1K. Looks like they have added more frame rigidity to enhance handling.

Re: 2008 Hyabusa

I will read through it a bit more and report...I skimmed through it while waiting with the other half in the airport...she distracted me so I couldnt get into the mag fully (good distraction). It basically goes over the history of the old bike and then compares it to the new bike. They go over the development and also have the bikes on the track at the same time and the new one was pulling away from the old on the straight. I think dry weight is a bit under 500lbs still. More to come...

OK, I have read the mini book.

I can tell you this much: It's going to be fast!

I'd make the guess it's very functional aero.

Re: 2008 Hyabusa

I still didnt get a chance to read the full story, but from when I glanced over it there was nothing particular of note that I can recall...only thats its better than the last bike (meaning quicker...dont know about faster).

It'll be fast but looks too much like the old one-I guess that was the best aerodynamic design?

Yeah, they said a bit under 500.

It read like ad copy, and nothing really noteworthy, but that bike is gonna be awesome.

Interesting market stats on it too.

I'm sure it is and they do heaps of testing in the tunnel but it looks hideous.

We've become used to what a motorcycle should look like...to the point aero, even on GP bikes, is compromised compared to what it could be.

Yeah but you don't see GP bikes with that hump on the back

Yeah, because it doesn't look like what the punters expect of a motorcycle in ads or on TV.

Re: 2008 Hyabusa

They've sold a zillion of the older ones, and the 'busa community definitely wanted that kind of thematic continuity.

In other words, they like the look of that thing (and the functionality of NOs bottle storage...

Re: 2008 Hyabusa

I have heard the old 'Busa refered to as a "pregnant manatee".

The new model looks like a manatee too. Though in this case it is a manatee supermodel...that just happens to be with child also, only not quite so far along

The hump probably works in a straight line, which is the Busa's specialty. I think the bodies of contemporary GP bikes are designed to have a minimal side silhouette, which makes them easier to turn at speed... with the exception of the Ducati, which has a top speed advantage but loses speed to the Hondas and Yamahas in the turns.

Also, the lilliputian GP jockeys can tuck in tighter than the fat Americans who will ride Busas... lessening the need for a big hump.

That's my estimate anyway.

Re: 2008 Hyabusa

Yeah, Valentino made a big deal out of the side silhouette a few years back.

Yesterday I went looking for an article I read years ago online, but couldn't find it. In the article Yamaha had a trick/ugly bike, but the article in general was on aerodynamics, and why bikes look like they do.

For sure the aero package is worked on by engineers, but the envelope is given by the stylists.

Re: 2008 Hyabusa

I think I may have read it in Valentino's autobiography, but when they were developing the 211 he complained that the fairing was too small, so they gave him a bulbous aero unit but it handled like a pig so he went back to the small fairing.
