Another one to the dark side.......

Well, I can now stop bugging you guys about which bike to get for the track. Thanks for all the input! (My wife thanks you too...because now I'll stop making her look at pictures every night!)

I really wasn't ready to buy just yet and it was a slight stretch to pick her up, but this one was too good to miss. As a result, the mods will come very slowly...only the basics necessary for a track day or two this year, but I figure she's a good platform to build on for years to come. Unfortunately the VFR's future in my stable is now less certain.

2006 GSX-R 750. 4,100 miles. STOCK except for frame sliders, which is a huge plus for me. It even still has the warning stickers on the tank and fairing. Over all very clean. The color is just ok in the pics, but in person the red is very nice (not that it matters when the race plastics are on.) The pics are from a cell phone. Better ones this weekend.

The riding position sucks compared to the VFR lol, but I'll get used to it. I wish I had the time off to join you guys at Grattan. This one's going to be a track bike (if I keep her long enough )...so I'm really planning on next year!

Now where are my flip-flops?

Very nice! Congrats!

So, will you be adding a second steering damper?

Thanks!

I thought about a Scotts rotary for the top of the triple, and maybe another on the frame mounted symmetrically with the stocker.

Nice, like that color. You're gonna love it! My 600 is an '07, they didn't change between '06 and '07. The stock suspension is surprisingly good for stock suspension, I haven't done anything with mine yet other than to get it set up as far as sag goes.
For the track, I recommend putting on an R1 throttle tube, the 2004 year works. The throw on the stock one is loooong. Only bike I've had to move my hand and regrip when getting WFO on the track. The R1 helps that. Doesn't quite make it 1/4 turn, but an improvement.
A -1 tooth in the front is good, too.

Have fun!

Thanks everyone.

I did enjoy the test ride. The intake and exhaust noise on the stock muffler was very cool.

Suspension is the first priority. The tires are still pretty good for a street bike, but she'll get a new set prior to my first track day which will hopefully be in September.

I'll keep the throttle in mind HondaGal.

He wanted extra for the 12 O'clock bar, but since I can only wheelie by accident I passed.

It's going to be frustrating. I have to work all weekend and through next week, so I'll be lucky to get her through the DMV for inspection and registration. My anniversary is coming up too, so it may be weeks before I get to put her on the street (the bike I mean. )

Yes congrats! A friend of mine has the same year, only in black. He raves about it, both on and off the track.

Can't wait to see the pics with the flip flops, shorts, beater and the hat turned sideways man!

On a serious note, I know that you will love that bike. It's on top of my list of bikes when I return to the riding world!

Thanks everyone for the !!!!

It's great to be able to share such a passion with other people. What does the rest of the world do with their free time?

It was late when I got home last night, so here's more to the story:

I went up on Tues to look at it and ran my "pre-used bike before I hand over the stack of bills" checklist.

The bike was immaculate. Obviously detailed, but it was clean in spots that detailing usually doesn't reach.

I started it and let it idle, shut it down, started it again...let the bike heat until the fan ran and shut it down again.

I was about to hand over the cash until I flicked the kill switch one last time and there it was.......the "FI" light flashing on the dash. I think I cursed out loud b/c I really wanted the bike, but there was a bad indicator staring me in the face.

We talked for a bit, and he said that he knew about the light but forgot to mention it. The dealer told him it was a relatively easy fix, but they didn't have time to do it for a few weeks.

I must be getting older but instead of getting caught up in the excitement and just buying the bike anyway, I managed to walk away and drive the hour home even after he offered to drop the price.

I did some research and found that the FI light is a common issue related to the "SET" valve. Some fix it and some just disable it. It's basically a valve that closes on the exhaust via a servo. Suzuki claims it increases midrange. The general opinion is that it closes the valve to meet noise/emissions regulations.

I emailed the guy back and we negotiated some more. We settled on a price for the bike with the FI light and I decided to take a leap of faith that the issue was an easy fix. I drove an hour north again to pick her up on Thurs.

Here's my shameless plug, if the site will allow me. Please support or at least shop prices at SpeedWerks (SpeedWerks Sport Bike Services - Home) in Dover, DE. These guys just flat out rock. It's a small race shop that I happened across years ago. They have come through for me time and time again and today was no exception. I send every bit of business his way that I can.

It took his mechanic just over a minute to remove the rear cowl, and another 30 seconds to adjust the set valve. FI light is no longer an issue and I saved hundreds on the bike.

How does someone become a site sponsor? I'll pass the word to him and see if he's interested.

Commercial over.....more pics.

Thanks for the offer, but the track-bike budget has officially been blown.

For now, all I will be doing is stuff to protect the bike like case covers, different frame sliders, and maybe some plastics.

The rest will come over the years.

We were joking around at the shop that they were more likely to be used for standing wheelies than saving the bike. The problem is that on a low side in soft ground, they'd probably dig in waaaay too much.

The other problem is that they are no-cut sliders. There is a bracket that moves them around the fairing. Good in theory...but in reality the bracket would probably move in a crash and they wouldn't perform as advertised.

My bud has a sweet set on his 750. The sliders can be removed from the base and replaced with a metal cap that has a hole for towing straps...pretty trick!

I've seen those, pretty cool.

My Woodcrafts are the two-piece, so when I lowsided, I only had to replace a $15 puck.
