Suzuki DR650SE

There is a 2005 essentially brand new DR650SE available in the area for what seems to be a good price. Anyone know much about this bike? Positives and negatives? I know the insurance would be cheap

All I know is it's got a coffee can cylinder and would sound rad with a Supertrapp.

I had a '98. Sold it last year. Piece of crap for commuting. Unconfortable, slow, and sounds like a MBW. On the positive side it gets around 60 MPG.
Needs lots of upgrades.

Somebody from Wilmington is coming up to look at it today he said.

I'm not really ready to get anything quite yet.

I still think the Versys would be neat too.

What are you trying to do with it?

You'll hear how slow it is until you talk to someone with a KLR (whopping 38hp there as opposed to 47 or so on the DR I believe). Any on/off bike like that can be fun, it just has a different place for it. I don't mean physical location - I mean the same shit that bugs you on your sportbike roadwise can be pretty darn fun on a bike with adequate suspension and gutsy lowend.

If you can adapt your riding style it will probably be one of the most fun bikes you've ever owned/ridden...if you can get into it.

What's your commute like

Any of the 650 singles can _exist_ on the highway, but none are going to win any races. You need to take one out for a rip to see what I mean. I believe everyone should have a 650 single dualsport.

The 400's seriously run out of wind around the 70mph mark. You can mod them , but really its a 400cc dirtbike...it doesen't want to wind its life away droning on the highway.

Cheap is probably KLR or Honda XR650L territory...or that SE of which you speak possibly too. That Versys is interesting but not really in your price point...is it?

Commute is about 12 miles through town with a brief max speed limit of 55mph.. mostly 35 and 45 through town.

Versys is on the high end of what I was thinking. Certainyl picking up a 650 dualsport for 2-3k would be cheaper...

I've seen some of these made street legal. I don't know how easy, or if legal at all, that would be where you are, but the price seems right to me.

Ooops...
Here let's try this:
"
Excellent condition, well maintained, Oil changed every couple hours, Recently serviced shock and forks, Ready Racing stainless oil filter, Works Connection radiator braces, Troy Lee Graphics, carbon fiber glide plate, water pump guard and oil filter guard, Pro Taper Windham with pad, Pro Taper 22mm triple clamps, Pro Taper aluminum throttle tube, Cycra Probends with the low profile deflectors, ASV F3 Pro clutch lever, Magura 13mm master cylinder, braided steel front & rear brake lines, Moto-Master 4 piston front brake caliper, Moto-Master 320mm flame front brake rotor, Galfer Wave rear brake rotor, Fastway axle blocks, White Brothers Aluminum Pro full pipe, K&N air filter, JT 14 tooth countershaft sprocket, Pro Taper 50 tooth aluminum rear sprocket, DID NZ chain, TM Design factory chain guide, UFO supermoto front fender, 16.5" x 3.5"/17.0" x 4.5" black Behr rims with red FPR billet hubs with nearly new Dunlop (soft) slicks (125/155) with 2 races on them, SME carb catch, APA coolant catch, APA exhaust slider, SME front & rear axle sliders, SME peg sliders, choice of seats (tall, stock or step), various extra new and used plastics (red and white). I also have a brand new Adler Slipper Clutch and blue Marchesini supermoto-specific wheels (16.5" x 3.5" & 17.0" x 5.0") that are not included, but could be for the right price. I'm sure there are other little doo-dads I've failed to mention. I do have the mx front caliper and master. I do NOT have mx wheels. Fast and reliable. No problems. Please PM or email me with any questions. Thanks."

Your 650 dualsport (or even 400 in this case) would be cool. I'd inch towards the 6xx if you think you might be interested in doing some further exploring and longer day tours.

Inch towards the 400 if you're interested in staying more local, more serious dirt riding.

This is assuming we're talking lower compression single piston dual sports like the DR, KLR, XL, etc.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards the KLR as it looks mucho comfy. I don't know if the 1700 increase to the versys would be worth it or not. The DRZ-SM is a thought too... I dunno.
