Talk about droolin....

I went to the local Honda dealer for the first time in a looooooooong time, they had a CRF450x street legal motard on the show room floor!

I think I have found the next toy I will add to the list. Seems like a good solid choice for 80% track 20% street duty.

Anybody have any logical reason to disagree?

Re: Talk about droolin....

They're a very specific machine, and I know several that have bought them.

Many sell them not long after as they find them boring (especially on the street) but others, some here on the forum love them.

As an only bike, most wouldn't like one, but as a second or third, maybe all right.

Re: Talk about droolin....

Are they boring because of their relatively poor higher speed performance?
The concept seems cool, especially in a very urban area.

Re: Talk about droolin....

I wouldnt buy it as a primary bike, I could see how they'd be boring.

My 954 keeps me on my toes, someday the RS will ride again so it'd be a 2nd bike mainly for occasional trackdays some street use for those local spirited rides. I've been itching for a motard for so long I dont think I'd sell it too quickly.

Re: Talk about droolin....

You could always buy an XR650R, too. Might be a little more user friendly on the street. Also, there are always used ones to be found that have already been converted to street use with the Baja Designs kit. I bought my 2000 XR650R used in 2005 for only 3200, and with all of the motard conversion stuff (mostly just the wheels and brakes and flat black paint) I still had less than $5k in it when it was done.

Your XR is mighty handsome. Damn, I would love to test ride that thing. The all black scheme is beautiful....

I love that bike, but, as an everyday rider you may be disapointed.

Plus you WILL want to looking to maintenence costs. Apparently they are a LOT with that bike.

Other than that, I cannot think of anything to disagree with.

I wanna get one for general hooliganisms and commuting. Will have to say that my 450 in its current trim is only getting 20 MPG.

Re: Talk about droolin....

The CRF's and other dirtbikes made today don't hold much oil so it should be changed a lot if used for a street bike.

I had a DRZ400SM and as a street bike I loved it for short rides but as a track bike the grin factor is huge. As some one else stated they are not everyday bikes but they are very fun bikes.

Wait till spring and you will get a review from Dave after he checks mine out.

Re: Talk about droolin....

I've seen CRF's come off Grattan with 1/4 of a qt in the overflow bottle and I'm pretty sure they don't hold any more than the TRX450.

Get yourself a Buell Ulysses..... It is a Motard essentially, but on a more street usable scale. Plus it has the sport adventure nature of a BMW GS

Your XR always comes to mind when this topic comes up, I still have the info you gave me on it. I dont remember the weight or height difference but thats prob the biggest factors.

Nothing is set in stone yet, I may be just getting my hopes up again.

Not an everyday rider, I've been bordering fair weather rider, plus it'd be a 2nd/3rd bike to me.

Sorry I'm theeeee most brand loyal Honda rider in history. (My Aprilia is the only exception and thats due to lack of comparable option by Honda)

My XR650R holds 2.5qt total capacity. The first year I built it (05) I took it down to Deal's Gap for a week. I didn't check oil on it until Thursday, and after I added a quart, it was still not reading on the dipstick Ever since then I've checked oil every day I've ridden it, and changed it at least every 1k miles. I think when it blew up at Grattan last year it wasn't because of flogging it mercilessly, it was probably already on it's way out. That's why I really wasn't too bent about having to rebuild it, I saw this coming. After I put it back together though, it had better last this time! I didn't change my gearing for Grattan, either. A mistake I won't make again. I was already topped out and on the rev limiter at the entrance to the front straight, and it's a LONG way to turn one pinging the limiter. I can't wait until this year, I got a few 1:38's with it geared the way it was, I should be able to drop a few seconds just on the front straight alone.

Re: Talk about droolin....

I'm really thinking that thanks to bwhip my next bike has changed.

Be a tough decision when the time comes
XR650 as evltwin suggests
-vs-
SUPER SWEET CRF450 as I've wanted since they came out
-vs-
Fine Italian piece of machinery SXV

Re: Talk about droolin....

The one nice thing about the XR650R is the availability of parts. The model has been unchanged since 2000, and there's a lot of aftermarket stuff out there as well. I really like the Aprilia, too (saw one last year at Road America) but I'm not sure I could spend that much on one. You should be able to build a stout XR 'tard for around $5k, or maybe even find one for sale that's already been done.

Re: Talk about droolin....

That Aprilia is so nice, and a HUGE thing that it has that seems worth the extra money is FI. I'm not very good with jetting and stuff with carbs.

Its going to be a real tough choice, I'm really fading out the CRF right now, the Aprilia seems to have that beat hands down.

As for XR vs SXV, cost difference doesnt seem so bad to me. I'm always sketchy for brand new models so the XRs proven reliablity is a plus.
