My hitch arrived in time so I will be taking the bike on my trip to Idaho. We need to go for a ride. I'll be there June 15th to July 10th, I know that overlaps with your trip to Grattan but hopefully we can find an evening or Saturday to get out. My bike isn't quite as sexy as a Hyper or SXV, it's more like the uglier older sister but I think she'll hold her own. Hopefully we can find some curves.
She's ready...

...dude you ride an offroad bike with slicks, 1/2 the weight of a GS, double the suspension, with a browning 50 cal going off 32" from your skull as a daily freaking driver - I'd expect anything except a nitro dragbike to be bland by comparison - SSG
I figured it would have to be the Hyper...but technically mine isn't entirely legal either.
I'll be in touch.

Your bike has a confused identity. On the sides, it is #2, but the front it is #8

It makes me do terrible things every time I get on.

I don't go anywhere on it without earplugs, not anywhere.

Motard Illinois is on the list shortly after returning from Idaho... We'll see then just how confused the bike is.

I'm here. 22 hours of driving time and 1475 miles. Can't wait to terrorize Idaho with the 'tard.

Hey whip, I know you're on the road but if you happen to see this...Which road is better for 'tards, Bogus Basin or Hwy 21? I think I'll be hitting one of the two today. Maybe both.

Bogus. Much tighter, way fewer cars. 21 is more of a touring ride.
Unfortunately I've found that EVERY road in Idaho is either piled with sand, dirt, or the excess rock from chip sealing right now. I can't remember Idaho roads ever being this bad for junk on the road.

Bogus Basin ride report. SWEEET motard road. I grew up skiing at BB but it had been a lot of years since I'd been up there. As whip warned bicycles EVERYWHERE. Mad props to them. There is a sign at the bottom that says 3000ft. The sign at the top says 6000ft. There have been three bicyclists killed by motorists in the last three weeks so motorist/bicyclist tensions are high. I slowed down and passed them all with a very wide margin to hopefully maintain relations. On the way up every single car that I came up on immediately pulled over and let me pass. Some waited for pull outs, which are placed almost every mile, other just signalled over and waved me by. Either way I was pretty stoked at the politeness and gave them all a wave when I went by. Although I imagined every one of them getting on the phone with the police to report a crazed man in full race leathers. I was having a blast. Not pushing at all, riding at maybe 6/10th's pace (6/10th's of my pace not 6/10th's of what bwhip could manage). With the bicyclists, cars, and all the sand washed across the road I figured it was pretty good. The road really is awesome. Very tight with a lot of corners suggesting 20mph. Nothing like it in Iowa. About 5/8th's of the way up I spotted what appeared to another motard up ahead. Cool right? Wrong. I caught him VERY quickly, it turned out to be a Husqvarna dual sport. The guy wasn't even going the speed limit and through the corners was going about 15 mph and kept putting his foot out like he thought he was going to fall over. He was on knobbies that appeared completely bald in the center. The first turnout came and went, and the second, and so on. He would not pull over. It hit the point that I started pointing to the signs every time we came to one. Still nothing. Me back there letting him hear every bit of my T4 exhaust. The entire road is double yellow for the entire 15 miles. At the bottom there is a big sign that says, "No Passing next 14.5 miles." After following him for miles I finally passed him in a brief straight spot. At that point we were probably only about 1.5 miles from the top. After about 5 corners I came up on two more riders on similar bikes. Both were riding the same way. At that point I just thought, "screw it" and gave up. Just placidly following along. The guy I passed was on me a short time later. Probably pissed, oh well, it was a VERY clean pass. I figure he's on ADV Rider right now whining about it. When we got to the top, the first two pulled over in the parking lot, the third joined. I rode past, flipped around and headed back down making sure I didn't get behind them again. The way back down was very similar. Every vehicle pulled over for me, even a Goldwing. Then about half-way down I came up on a BMW M3. I had to follow him the entire way down. At about 5 under the speed limit. I never found a spot that I felt like pushing it to get past.
It still was an awesome ride with some great wear on the sides of the tires.
Next, I headed up Hwy 55. You can search bwhips threads for pics of it also
Right after turning onto 55 to head north I pulled up to a light next to a guy on a KTM 950 Adventure. I gave a friendly wave, he nodded back. The light went green and I pulled away, maybe half-throttle. A very short time later he guns it past me. Then stops at about 55mph (speed limit) I'm in the other lane, cruise up to 60 and go on past. Shortly thereafter the 4 lane becomes two lane, there was a car up ahead in his lane that was near to merging, I poured it on, go past, he must have REALLY poured it on because he squeezed through behind me. Now we have clear road so I bump it up a notch, maybe 65ish. I was on the left side of the lane and he was on the right. I'm kinda forgetting he's even there. All of a sudden he blows past me on the right, remember we're sharing a lane at this point, I didn't even see him coming. I'm glad I didn't change my mind about lane position.
Now you can continue reading if you want to lose a little respect for me and be able to call me a squid, etc.
Sooo, as he goes past, I decide to see what the uber 'tard will do. I just stick right on him. I have no idea how fast we're going since as previously reported my speedo stops reading at 66mph. We were nearing triple digits I'm sure. I know he's got me on power by a long way. Those 950's make about 90hp, I'm at 54hp. At this point we are right where the Hwy starts getting a little curvy, big sweeping curves, not motard curves. I had noticed that he was on some semi-knobbie type tires so I know he's pretty much maxed out through the corners. At this point the red mist has a decent hold me. I'm just sticking behind him figuring that I might as well have fun while it lasts, no way I'm going to attempt a pass on him or anything like that, I just figured that I kinda had a rabbit to chase so why not. At this point we'd gone maybe 3-4 miles, we came out of the first set of curves and it was over. State Trooper, sitting directly around a blind curve. KTM didn't even slow, gained on a couple of cars, passed them, and kept going. I came up on the car in front of me, parked it there at the limit and just waited, it seemed like forever, I was starting to wonder if he was even coming, I couldn't see any flashing lights in my diminutive little mirror, I kept turning around looking. I knew time was up when the car behind me pulled to the side. I immediately pulled over, wondering if he'd just point to me and then chase the other guy. Nope, he started pulling over as well. I immediately pulled gloves, helmet, and ear plugs then just waited. His first question, was "is that your buddy that took off." I just said, "no, he went past me awhile back and I wanted to see if I could keep up with him since he had a way bigger bike." I was very calm, cooperative, and humble. I was just hoping I wasn't getting arrested and was doing the math in my head on a ticket for 45 over the speed limit. He asked about the Iowa plates and I explained that I had grown up in Idaho but went to school in Iowa and that I was home for a visit. He was pretty cool about all of it and thanked me for actually pulling over rather than running like the other guy, he said he would have arrested him if he could have caught him. Then he said that since I had grown up in the area I should know how dangerous that Hwy is. I assured him that I did. He said that there had been two accidents on the Hwy today with one involving a motorcycle. He took my license, insurance, and registration and headed back to his car. While he was back there I just about fell off the bike. I was parked at the very edge of the pavement so on my right side it dropped off about four inches to gravel. I lost my balance to that side and couldn't get a foot down because of the drop off. I was sure everything was going over, my helmet was hanging on the bar on that side so I was trying to save the bike while keeping my helmet from dropping in the gravel. Somehow I managed to jump off to that side and get under the bike and keep it upright. About that time the trooper came walking back, with nothing but my papers in his hand. He told me he had clocked us at over 90mph. I actually think that's on the low side. Then he said, "you got your adrenaline rush for the day, I'll let you go with a warning to just please be careful." At some point, I can't remember when in the conversation he told me that he really wanted the other guy and would have arrested him for eluding if he could have caught him. He also told me that he used to have a sport bike but sold so that he wouldn't do stupid things on it anymore. I continued on up to Horseshoe Bend, then turned around and headed home. All at the speed limit. I passed him on the way back down, we both waved. Honesty works sometimes.
It was a great day on the motard. Wish ya'll could've been here.

I think we've all done similar things...I certainly have.
I've always used the same 'honesty is the best policy' approach, and I've rarely been disappointed with the Officers reaction. Your average LEO is a pretty sharp individual, and they deal with people all the time - They know when you're being straight with them and appreciate it.
