The idea of cooling the head after an impact may have medical validity, I don't know. The effectiveness of their design or whether its use could cause further harm or unintended consequences is also beyond me.

But a couple of things irritate me about this presentation on their "News- Press Release" page- "

One is that they don't have a product or a current retro-fit program ( not that I'd be first in line to give them one of my helmets to screw around with.) To whom, then is this effort aimed? If SHOEI, Arai, Scorpion, HJC or another manufacturer licenses this technology, it won't be soon and it won't be inexpensive. Or is it aimed at the regulatory agencies in Europe and the US who would presumably be motivated to require this protection on all helmets by a date certain?

Second, they reprint the Motorcylist DOT-vs Snell article and the responses without adequate atttribution. Yes, at the very end they provide a link to the source (motorcyclistonline), and at the beginning they have a link to the source without naming it outright, so it would seem to a casual reader (or a politician, mainstream media journo or a public health advocate/lobbyist) that the work is the product of thermahelm. They never acknowledge the authors or indicate the article is reprinted by permission, nor do they acknowledge the copyright. Cheesy, sleazy.

Third, they fail to mention anywhere within this controversy that SNELL updated its 2010 standards considerably.

Finally, if you think I'm over reacting, or that they're not attempting to link their product to the reputation of established companies, stealing credit for research that isn't theirs, or undeservedly portraying themselves as a company with credentials (or a finished product), I ask you: What's wrong with this picture? It doesn't make me more likely to buy their theory or the efficacy of their product.

    Agreed.

I'm with you, don't know the medical relevance, but their marketing is downright offensive.

CBR you should send that same rant on to them with an explanation of what is wrong with their picture.

Now that you're here, Will - I wonder what you think of their idea in general.

Been pondering it for a couple days. I've decided that I don't know enough about closed head injuries to say anything one way or another. You could probably Google as much info on it as I'd be able to pull out of my head. The theory sounds okay as much of the damage is done by swelling.

So, if I understand the concept, they want to insert one of those instant cold compresses into the liner of a helmet...

And on those hot Alabama summer days, you can bang your head against the gas tank to get insta-air-conditioning.
