    SHOEI's new X Twelve and RF1100 Snell 2010 approved

    SHOEI NA

There are a couple of reviews of the RF1100 model which seem to be positive. Word around the wera campfire is that the X-12 weighs 100 grams more than the eleven, and surprisingly even weighs more than the RF1100, which shares many of the new features. That's upsetting some people, but it makes the lower priced RF model that much more attractive.

New features include the new spring loaded shield base plate which pulls tight to get a more wind, rain and noise-proof seal, and an emergency release system that allows a (very well informed, i guess) EMT to remove the cheek pads from the helmet with a couple of external tabs, making it less likely to further aggravate a possible neck injury while removing the helmet.

I'll probably get a '12, just because a SHOEI probably saved my life in 1996. My orange X-11 only has a year of shelf-life left.

I'm seeing pricing for white ones of about 580 bucks, or as I prefer to think about it, less than 10 bucks a month over a 5 year life. And it may actually get me to the end of the five year period.

My dad used to tell me never to economize on gasoline, tires, and bourbon. I'd add motorcycle gear to that list. No point in being in the hospital with an avoidable brain injury and another $200 in the bank, right?

Guess I'll find time to paint it over the winter.

Nicely said, but you forgot TP.

As every broke azz college student learns, it's gotta be the good multi-ply soft stuff, even if it means Ramen one more night that week.

Pretty sure I'll be replacing my 11 with a 12 when the time comes.

So you're saying the cheaper, one ply rough stuff is likely to give you a brain injury? Guess that might be true for some people, I wasn't going to put you in that category.

I'd inadvertently get the crips helmet and ride through the Michigan militia hood.

I have been considering trying an X11 but I think I might miss the brow vents in the Arai shield

Actually, very timely as my Nolan is set to expire next year. The Arai is already mere decoration.

I did quite a bit of sampling at the Moto GP vendor area at Indy last month and I'm still not sure which direction to go. I've grown very fond of the modular and the inability of any weather condition to fog the Nolan but I really enjoyed my Arai full-face time...

o/t but my scorpion is the best combo of an airflow helmet and anti/fog full face. (thats for BizJetGuy).

The new RF1100 is looking interesting to me...

One of the features mentioned is a shield that has pins installed for a fog city-type insert. And, for the racy guys, tear-off posts that can be adjusted without tools. The scorpion anti-fog shield is superb, I agree. Wish the others would license it.

It's got my attention, too. Lots.

I'm thinking the RF1100 in Axis Yellow for the next lid.

How's the scorp for noise? Not that it really matters with my kick ass ER6-i's but it's still a factor.

I've been riding since summer 2003, I've had 6 helmets. My first was an HJC, rode for a year with it then gave it to a friend to use when drag racing his car. Bought a Suomy and loved it. Bought another SUomy cause I liked it so muchand went down a size, crashed that one. Bought a Scorpion and crashed that one. Got a concussion so I went back to another Suomy and added a Shark for a ridiculously cheap price from a local guy.

I can't argue with the top of the line helmets, to me they are just better in every way.

and Scorpion doesn't have the only no fog shield, Suomy's don't fog no matter how hard you try. my glasses on the other hand are a different story.

There's been a few Shoeis I've wanted but I know the RF1000 never fit me so I never tried the X-11.

    Scorp seems loud to me...

Yes, SHOEI does have pinlock compatibility for all their shields, and the pinlock stuff on my Nolan simply couldn't be fogged. The only difference I noticed is the starbursts at night on the pinlock shield. The scorp has no difference rain or shine and IMO is easier to clean.

None of that matters if you can't get them to fit. My large Shoei X11 fits me perfectly and coincidentally is the best helmet ever made.

I wanted to like the scorpions but I just couldn't find one that fit. Plus they 're heavy.

I might need a new RF1100 if I get back into the sport touring business.

A lot of that is subjective and depends on the fit. Having said that, any helmet that ventilates well is not going to be quiet. Also, those helmets that are designed to resist aerodynamic lifting will be louder, but arguably less fatiguing.

You can always attenuate the noise with earplugs, but if there's inadequate ventilation, you'll probably fill the quiet helmet with your kvetching.

I always use earplugs or in-ear phones with my relatively noisy X-11, and the result is that I can't hear the musical V-4 exhaust note on my road bikes very well.

So I'll take them out for short rides.

Thus the dig on noise levels for modulars. Noise is really not that big of an issue for me as I also ride with either plugs or phones. My V-twin just sounds like an angry sewing machine so I'm not missing out on much, there

Are the Shoei's at retail outlets yet? I'd like to slip one on and see how the RF1100 fits.

Glad I waited a bit. Found the X-12 in white for $470 with free shipping.

    Working on a design.

BTW, I saw new Bostrom replica X-11's in blue for $299. That's a great helmet that can be painted if you don't like the graphics...

Or if you really like blue stuff, it might be worth a try.

BJG, I think my Scorpion EXO-700 is VERY noisy. Excellent ventilation, little fogging, VERY noisy. I removed the plastic rear spoiler and it's quieter now. Not as cool looking but it slightly reduced wind noise.

What general melon shape does the X-11/X-12 cater to? My Spec1R needs to be replaced but I've yet to find anything that fits me better. If I can find something that fits close but is quieter(and maybe a bit lighter) I'd be pretty stoked.

My X-11 fits well....it is noisy, but again all the better to hear the gear whine

I have a hard time fitting helmets as my melon is long front to back, i would get pressure on the forehead from other helmets, so ND4SPD, I would say long front to back. as a side note, i did stop by the arai tent at Mid-O and they suggested the "profile" then as a shape that would fit well.

Before that i had an RF900, and that did not fit like the XSP and the X-11 do. The XSP was retired for age, AND due to Miguel's signature!

I should know today or tomorrow how it fits compared with an X-11, and If the weather holds out I should know how noisy it is. Gotta take the RC out for one more blast before it goes into high security hiding for the winter.
