Link to the actual study. Harley-Davidson and Scorpion received 4 circles along with Icon and Shoei - Only Arai got 5.
Quote:
  • The study measures the overall satisfaction of motorcyclists with their new helmet in three key factors:
  • ventilation,
  • face shield, and
  • design and styling; which consist of 11 attributes:
    • quietness;
    • ventilation/air flow;
    • de-fogging;
    • face shield ability to keep wind out;
    • face shield ability to resist scratching;
    • ease of replacing face shield;
    • scratch resistance of shell;
    • color/graphic design; weight;
    • ease of fastening the strap; and
    • fit and comfort.
Quote:
With a score of 830 on a 1,000-point scale, Arai ranks highest and performs particularly well in the ventilation
and design and styling factors. Shoei follows with a score of 815 and performs well in face shield. Icon ranks
third overall with a score of 806.
I think some of these criteria are inconsequential bullshit, though I think Arai is a great company with great customer service.

I'm sure they have someone private-label them (didn't BMW have Schuberth helmets with their rondel on them?) - but those who buy them have slightly different criteria than JD Power -

  1. Ease of removal as one crosses a state line in which helmets are not required.
  2. Minimal coverage, easily covered with a "show us your tits DOT approved" do-rag to create the illusion of helmetless freedom.
  3. Minimal coverage, easily convertible to the wearer's hairpiece to create the illusion of helmetless freedom.
  4. Minimal coverage, yet not easily confused with one of 'them Jewish hats.'
  5. Good adhering surface for amusing anarchistic stickers.
  6. Good adhering surface for Viking horns or other 'Badass Invading Visigoth' or 'Wannabe Nazi' regalia.
  7. Inexpensive, in order to maximize purchase of chrome implements.

That's what I was after, thanks for clarifying

Yeah I think BMW uses Schuberth or at least used to. I think they also have an Arai XD variant with the roundel as well.

I just saw an ad for Arai that said something like "Yes, it really does cost that much."

Thought it was a great approach.

Wow...

Is the Icon even SNELL rated?

By far the most relevant "article" I've seen rating helmets was a RRW article that compiled the results of concussions vs brand. Arai and Shoei were miles ahead back then, with IIRC AGV third.

Edit: Went and looked. Much of Icon's helmet line is SNELL M2005 certified.
