Touring Geekdom Achieved - Aerostich Elkskin Ropers
[flamesuit=on]
I've been intrigued by these things for years and I finally accepted the fact that $39 is worth spending to quel my curiousity. No, they aren't made of exotic leather, have a dozen velcro straps or even padding in places where you would probably need it but I had to find out for myself.
Because of the lack of armor/protection, etc. I plan on using these as mile killers and trips-to-the-grocery-store gloves. I'll always carry along the full-on gloves in the panniers.
They delivered last week and I finally got a chance to take a spin with them yesterday. Besides looking like you just picked them up at a hardware store, these things are the most comfortable gloves I've ever ridden with. The feel is great, no seams in awkward places, touch is ideal (for touch-screen GPS) and there is even a visor wipe built in to the left thumb. I was also surprised at the high level of wind resistance for such a light glove.
For an every day kind of glove or for extended periods of slab, these fit the bill. They're keepers...

Who's driving?
I love mine, but I do have a complaint. Unlike the kangaroo palmed gloves I've had before, these seem to me more "slippery" on the inside of the palm. If its not hot enough for my palms to be slightly sweaty, the glove slides around on my palm. They are not loose, in fact I have wide hands, short fingers so I tend to buy gloves smaller and strech them out. These I had to soak them in water, and sit on my hands in a fist for a few hours to get them formed and able to make a fist.

A good friend had a pretty spectacular crash in those and ended up with a lot of Ti holding his hand together. I don't know if another glove would have prevented all that damage, but he switched to Held after that.
The problem with wearing less protection for that trip down to the store is that you never know when you're going to need every bit of armor you have.

Safety is a very personal thing, and we all have different tolerance for it.
Personally, I've broken enough bones, been through enough physical therapy and spent enough time in the hospital, both as a patient and employee, that I am a paranoid.
For a 1 mile trip I'll be in my Aerostitch with Held Galaxies or sometimes Teknic ratskin "race" gloves, Shoei X-11 and 9 times out of 10 "race" boots. High temperature does not change my ensemble, and I knowingly sacrifice comfort, and cost, and sometimes liters of water, for protection.
Others have different feelings on it...

Do too.
Now that CBRCTZSVFR and LTL have roont the thread...
I'll just add +1.
The one day I didn't wear my riding pants last year, I fell-down-went-boom and took a chunk out of my knee-skin. Not even a mile from my house on a 3 mile trip. Wasn't my fault but we don't get to choose the times we fall down...

That's how I'm dressed, every ride, with my Astars bionic vest underneath.
...dude you ride an offroad bike with slicks, 1/2 the weight of a GS, double the suspension, with a browning 50 cal going off 32" from your skull as a daily freaking driver - I'd expect anything except a nitro dragbike to be bland by comparison - SSG

That notwithstanding, I'll let you guys know when I go to the wife-beater and pudding bowl with phony DOT sticker

Not flaming, just a data point... I don't know why they don't come out with a version of that glove with some more protection on the knucks and wristbone.

There is a new model in the most recent catalog that has knuckle protection, velcro closure, etc. but I figured I would try the original first.
