Bought discount scorpion made 2005

Bought a new scorpion EXO 700 helmet for 130 shipped. Great price then i loo when it was made....5/2005 I felt duped but in the long run 130 for a new helmet that i am used to wearing as apposed to 230 isn't bad. I had my old one for 2 1/2 years before i landed on my head at Buttonwillow. It had also hit the pavement a few times from accidental spills here and there.

What are you thoughts on buying a Cheap helmet this old and do you actually follow the five year rule. Do you buy helmets more often just cause? Whats your oldest helmet?

Most my helmets last 3 years so i don't mind so much it was made so long ago. not sure what happens to them i just end up with new ones at around that time.

I still have a friend with an rf 900 made a long time ago

Yes I do follow the five years. I have a brand new looking Arai in the closet that is a white graphic (thus cooler for the south) that was perfect. But I buy helmets to protect my head and the five is up so the safety is down. Got to protect what little sense I have

The 5 year rule is there because you can't tell if all the foam and padding under the shell is still good or not. If that's not good, the helmet is useless and you might as well just go without.
Better safe than sorry, IMO.

As it is, you paid $130 for a helmet that you'll still get a couple of years out of. Still not a bad deal.

I ordered one of those same discount Scorpions and got a date of 10/05. If it had been any earlier than that I might have returned it. I was aware that it was probably discounted for that exact reason so wasn't surprised but my current helmet was past the 5 year limit and I was headed to the track and out of money. Like NH said, $130 for a helmet that seems to be pretty good and that will give me a couple years of use isn't too bad.

Amortized over the remainder of the five year lifespan still makes this an inexpensive, reliable piece of safety equipment for a priceless piece of your anatomy.

I use the five year rule myself, and why not? From a different standpoint...I get a tetanus shot every ten years because that is recommended. I've never had tetanus, but I don't want to try it either.

I have had the opportunity to personally crash test helmets previously. All were within 5 year born on dates and did the job well protecting the melon, despite certain local claims that I am truly brain damaged, but that happened before I ever got on two wheels...
