I got the funk...y smell in my leathers

So I looked at the threads on leather cleaning and they seem to address the outside of the leathers, which seems to be fine on mine but after Grattan I'm noticing that mine definitely stink. That's after only two days on the track. I know people don't send them in for cleaning after every event? What do I do?

Febreeze your face off!

In all reality, this happened to me after the first weekend I had mine, which included 800 miles in one day. I do one of several things.

I let them line 'dry' outside, especially in these warm, summer months.
Storing them on a hanger, with them unzipped is key.
I actually do use Febreeze and it works!
Another thought is to stuff a clean towel down where "the funk" is to help with absorption.
Another thought is try to find something similar to cedar inserts for footwear and shove that down where it stinks.

Just let 'em air out, leave them hanging out of the closet for awhile. Is the liner removable? If so, you could wash the liner.

Edit: Just saw bobcat's post, yeah, outside unzipped is good. I also have one of those "shoulder saver" hangers that Aerostich sells. In addition to being the only hanger that hasn't broken (and I've gotten several years of use out of it), it kind of holds the upper torso area of the suit open a bit. Lemme see if I can find the link, it was about $20 well-spent.

Here's the link to the hanger. These things really hold up well under the weight of leathers. If it ever does break, I'm buying another.

I got lucky and the A* jacket I used to have came with a burly hanger like HG2 is talking about. My A* leathers also came with the same. It works wonders. If you don't have a hanger like this, go buy one.

I tried that thing, but it was uncomfortable as hell, and I ditched it after a couple of sessions...

I have them hanging unzipped and pulled open on the Alpinestars version of that hanger. I actually have three of them. Outside is no good around here since the humidity is 90% today. They've been hanging for a few days now so I might go with Febreeze next.

Thanks.

I forget how dry Montana is. That high of humidity would probably make it worse!

Well, you're not supposed to wear it silly! That got me thinking about the Carol Burnett skit she did about Gone with the Wind when she came down the stairs wearing clothes made out of curtains...with the curtain rod across her shoulders! Now I'm dating myself...back to my yardwork...

Yeah, it's humid here, too, I just hang it over a door in the airconditioning for a few days.

Yeah, I miss Idaho. It was 103 while I was there and felt WAY better than today which is about 89 degrees but 90% humidity. They would probably start growing things if I put them outside.

I have a big high shelf that mine always hang from in the spare bedroom. They actually never go in a closet.

I was thinking of using that method.

The bike actually rolled back into Waterloo, IA last night. A friend of mine had to go to Waterloo last night so I had him drop me off at TogaTim's place. Tim and I hurried and pulled all the tape off, put my fuses back in, bolted on mirrors, rear turn signals, plate, etc. As I was pulling on my rain gear the first drop fell, Tim said, "that's a bad sign." It rained almost the entire two hour ride home. I just went out and washed and polished it. So it's ready go.

Did you stuff it in a gear bag after the event? If you did that is why is is smelly. Always either hang it up or just leave them out in a trailer so they can dry. And the freebreze works. Now my helmet gets a bath with detergent after a few rides and is air dried.

They made the ride to Des Moines stuffed in a gear bag in bwhips trailer but then I pulled them out and hung them as soon as I got home.

That is where you made the mistake. Never throw them in a gear bag after a track day, or 3.

I have a hanger that I use to hang them on the way home, or just throw them over the bike in the trailer.

on a serious note-if using detergent use woolite and wash in cold only-less chance that it'll stain your undergarments next time you wear them.

That's spot on good advice right there. I have 15 or so deep south summer trackdays in my vanson's and they just smell like leather. That includes me sweating THROUGH them at jennings.

What I do....

I have one of those turbo circle fans that is just large enough to fit in the head hole.....

I sprinkle just a little bit of baking soda in the suit and place the fan in the head area and tighten the leather around it blows down the body of the suit and through the legs....

Do it for a couple of days.... it does the trick.... shake any remaining baking soda out of it and Bobs your Uncle!

Also sound advice. Forgot to do that one night at STAR school and it was like pullling teeth to get those cold f@ckers on in the morning.
