Commuting boots suggestions?
Currently I have a pair of Alpinestars SMX Plus that I wear on serious rides or when I'm not going to work/friend's house, etc. I am in need of a pair of boots mainly for commuting and short trips around town.
My criteria is: -Has ankle protection, not just light padding -Mid-height--If I got full-height boots I may as well wear the A-stars -breatheable (IE not waterproof as I don't usually ride in the rain) The reason I don't want to wear the A-stars to work is that they are cumbersome and kind of a pain to put on/take off. I'd like something that still affords me decent protection but isn't like a race boot. I was looking at these: Tour Master Response SC Motorcycle Boots :: New Enough, LTD They fit the bill quite well, except they are waterproof, which I fear might equal hot-as-hell! Any suggestions?

These seem to be pretty popular around here, you should give em a try.

hahahahahaha...no.
Yeah, I think I'm seeing even less gear out on the roads this year than last! I saw a guy and a girl out on a new 600RR (I think) last week. No gear whatsoever, unless you count the thong peeking out from the passenger's jeans. -1 for no gear, +1 for being classy!

Sidi Champion Air.
Motonation: The USA home of Sidi motorcycle boots, Spidi apparel and Vemar helmets. I've used mine for years.

When I just did the casual/commute ride I wore my Corcoran "military" boots.
After clicking on that link, those Sidi Scorpion Air's look like the winner in my book for the <cough>warm<cough> weather we have here. I love my Sidi Corsa boots so another pair from them will hit my closet once I get a new bike.

Of all the people here, I certainly understand your concern for ankle/heel protection.
However, I don't think you'll get the protection you are looking for in a commuter boot. Heck, I crushed my heel wearing a Prexport dedicated track boot with heel cup and ankle protection at 0mph. That said, my commuter boot is the Sidi On Road. Very comfortable once broken in. Waterproof, yes...but I've never found them hot or sweaty. I just bought my second pair, but the first pair is still going strong. Check newenough.com My Sidi Vertigo Corsas did a fine job of protecting me at LVMS. I don't think anything less than this, or a top of the line A* will protect the ankle as you want. There may be others, but these are the ones I am familiar with. So unless someone has other info that I don't, I think your search for commuters with real ankle protection will come up short. Sorry. |

Maxib & SSG--I agree it's a tradeoff for sure, I was just hoping to find something with some protection that breathed well that wasn't a full on race boot. We'll see, I guess...I'm still undecided.

Did you take a look at these?
Sidi Champion Air Motorcycle Boots :: New Enough, LTD Not a full height boot, but not so low as to loose all of the ankle support. Besides the side cups on the ankles, I like a boot that will prevent, or at least limit, hyper-extension I've never seen or tried them, so you are on your own to try ![]() I'm in the market for a commuting boot too, so please post up your thoughts on whatever you get

I have these: Tour Master :: Boots :: Solution WP Road Boot
I bought them before I rode to NH last September, and have ridden over 11K miles in them. They are waterproof and do tend to be a bit warm, though not as bad as I would have imagined (and I am in a rather warm climate ). They aren't mid height, but they aren't too tall either. These are the most comfortable boots I have had. Ever.

The best commuter "boot" is actually a Givi top box....
![]() That way you can wear the boots you like and switch into your streets at will...

Stick with the A*s boots you use already imho. Or get a perforated set. Then just bring a pair of Nike Free 5.0 for wearing at work or your buddy's house. Just slide them under your passenger strap, or in your tank bag, or in your phag-bag (these shoes collapse totally and weight practically nothing).
I had a buddy wipe out in so-called casual riding boots. Destroyed his ankle by highsiding on a routine corner that was slicker than he was accustomed too (oil or water he's not sure which he was in too much agony to pay that much attention following the accident). Took about a year for him to recover. He still isn't 100% right and probably never will be. But one thing is for sure, he's in his full track boot everytime he hits the road these days! /2 cents |

![]() Top box works great but I fill it with the helmet, overpants, and gloves when I go into the office. Going back and forth it is filled with the laptop and lunch bag, so not a lot of extra room for shoes ... though I could use the tank bag for my lunch

I agree. Granted, it was on the track but those SMX+ boots are the sole reason I still have my left ankle in tact. I wouldn't wear anything less on the street.
