Need new vehicle ASAP - tow up to 4000lb
Totaled my truck on an ice patch this weekend. cart-wheeled once it hit the ditch.
I have a loaner from my boss, but am looking for a replacement ASAP. I am hoping to have his car back this week.
Needs to be able to pull the boat, and if I find an SUV, then a small trailer for the road bike.
I may be pushing for too much, but after loan payoff, I am expecting to have about $4k towards "something" and if I can just pay cash for what i find, eliminate the car payment. (taking a page out of debt consolidation 101)
If anyone has solid leads on a beater that can hold up for a year or two, please let me know.
Thank God, i wasn't hurt but a small cut on my ring finger. Don't know for sure what happened to the dog, I found her an hour later playing with some labs at a nearby house no worse for wear.... :O)
Anyway taking suggestions for replacement. I may have to reconsider no payments if a solid deal can be had on a nice car. hoping to find the el cheapo tho.
-
Cartwheeled? Glad you're okay...
-
wow glad and the dog aren't hurt. that pretty amazing for cartwheeling a vehicle.
-
..doesn't argue politics on a motorcycle board
Glad you're OK! A certified used truck or van might be a better investment than a 'beater...' even if it means a modest payment for a while, it should still be running after it's paid for, and that would allow you to make payments to yourself for the next one.. removing a really expensive unforseen mechanical repair from the realm of possibility for a while...
-
Glad to hear you and the dog are ok. sounds like a big day.
See you at GRATTAN
-
Do too.
Late 90s, early 00s Chevy and GM 1500 series are showing good deals around here lately but I just passed a dealer selling an 07 F150 extended cab for $9500 not two days ago.
Shouldn't be hard to find something.

The hype is low.
To clarify, are you looking for a full sized truck, SUV or just something that will tow 4k lbs?

Thanks all,
yep in priority order:
tow 4000lbs
full size pickup / SUV
seating for 4 or more preferred.
...and looking at prices on the net....it looks like that is achievable around the 140k mile marker. not too bad. propsects include chevy 1500, ram 1500s, a couple of suburbans are up ( i think I may pass on the 7.4L!?!) and a few 2 dr Tahoe's. Past ride wan an 06 Ram1500 4x quad cab. it WAS a beautiful truck. out:

Well, you're off to a good start with the Chevy line. Suburbans are big vehicles and I would wager that most that buy those would really only need a Tahoe.
But based on your criteria, you might consider a Toyota Tundra. The first gen models will tow plenty and seat just as many and won't be as large as a Chevy. Similarly, a Sequoia is a good option if you like that platform and want an SUV. But if you're going to go that route, you might as well go LandCruiser. They run forever, their V8 has plenty of punch and has been absolutely reliable. And looking at prices (since I'm looking for one as well), You have find a 2000+ with a shade over 100k for $14k or less. Not to mention the really nice interior, seating for 7 and reliability for Toyota's flagship vehicle.

Happy to hear you and the pup are ok. Sounds like a nasty one.
I have been searching for a Jeep Cherokee out here. I6 4.0 gets about 20 MPG. Bonus is that you can take it out of 4wd and put it into just 2wd. (unlike most of the Grand Cherokee)
I find them with between 100K around 5 grand. 1998 - 2000.
From : http://www.trailerlife.com/towrating...honda-jeep.cfm
Cherokee/Wrangler 2.5 I-4 2,000 (a)
Cherokee/Grand Cherokee 4.0 I-6 5,000 (b,c,d)
Wrangler 4.0 I-6 2,000 (f)
Grand Cherokee 5.2 V-8 6,700 (b,c,d,e)
Grand Cherokee Limited (4WD) 5.9 V-8 5,000 (b)
NOTE: Trailer brakes required on all trailers weighing more than 1,000 pounds.
(a) Automatic Wrangler rated 1,000 pounds.
(b) Requires weight-distributing hitch with a maximum hitch weight of 750 pounds.
(c) Requires trailer-towing package.
(d) Requires automatic transmission.
(e) 4WD rated 200 pounds lower.
(f) Maximum hitch weight of 300 pounds.

Like the Grand Cherokees.....so will keep them on the short list. Same with a Tundra timmah, but they are harder to find. And so far a baby blue 1500. Sexahhhhh. (not) if we beat over the $4k mark, I will head the certified advice too
Just got word this morning from the adjuster, that it is indeed totalled out. So now what to do: truck / SUV hell I don't know.
Thanks all for the advice. I'll keep you posted. Seamus oughta be able to find one. SSG, would you sketch up a mapquest for me? :O)
edit: 97 Range Rover land Rover with 148k on the clock?

Pfired :(
98-2003 Durangos will pull in excess of 5000lbs and mine was pretty reliable if a bit crude. They can be had for about your price range. If you bargain sharply and you want to step up in price range you may be able to get a 2004 up Durango for around 10k and they are much nice than the previous gen Durango, I have one now and I love it. With the Hemi it pulls ~8000lbs and is surprisingly fast.

I'm glad you're OK. If you're patient, I'm sure a Yaris can pull 4000lbs in about 10 trips.

I could definitely sketch up a map....just give me a rough idea where it is you want to look

Ridgeline?
Hahaha, sorry I had to...
I had a 98 cherokee, not a bad truck if you drive it like an adult. I drove mine like a 22 year old and broke just about EVERYTHING on it. I only had it for 80,000 highway KMS and I had 2 FULL sets of u joints in it.
I had a stick and the sport model so it would go ok, but it doesn't have a bunch of torque on the highway.
Not sure what really fits the description. Maybe an envoy? I am really out of whack on vehicle prices down there.
See you at GRATTAN
-
haha Ridgeline, saw one for sale, not in the el-cheapo range.
as a side note, when a vehicle is totalled, what is the value you should expect to receive from insurance? Trade-in-value, Private party sale or retail? TIV is a low of 9800 to retail of 18.5k, 9k difference!
-
Try to find the exact truck for sale in local papers and see what it would cost to replace.
-
so looked at comps at cars.com: avg 19.8k for an 06, but with half the miles. taking off 2k for high mileage (per KBB) the insurance seems to be hitting fair numbers on the claim, including an adder for sales tax!
Was deciding between P'Up and SUV, but the wife would like an SUV more, so going to give that a go. Tahoe, Yukon or Next up will be a trailer then to haul dirtbikes and the CBR.
-
What about a 4 runner? lots of them around? Pathfinder maybe?

Search for threads by SHOTIME about his CR-v and Volvo S60R (keyword hints there for you but I'm not actually doing the searching ) and you'll see my views on insurance values.
Long story short is: refuse their first offer, itemize everything down to the air freshener that you've done to it that would make it worth more at the time of incident (recent major services will count if within X miles in some cases), and then find a mean average for the same car in the area - and fight tooth and nail to get no less than the retail selling price of that vehicle.
Just think of it as you need to replace what you have so that's the market you're going to be in...and thats the money you want. Not trade, not wholesale, etc. This is not a car trade in...
Then go put a down payment on a low mileage 07 CPO Ridgeline, and be glad you just made the smartest decision of your life. My brother in law has well over 130k on his with no issues, but he did do the brakes a little after 100k IIRC.

Both terrific options. If you can find a V8 4Runner, get that. They are terrific vehicles.

Sorry for the domestic fans out there, I have just had better luck with the imports...
What about a seqouia(sp)
I was always partial to the old "convertible" broncos and k5 blazers if I had to pick a domestic.

If I could find a way
I'd take back those words that hurt you
And you'd stay

I'd give them all to you
Then you'd love me, love me

THanks all....so we have at least decided on a full size SUV....Tahoe, Yukon are at the top of the list. Looking at the 8k range now, which allows for some late 90's tahoes still under 100kmi. No sequoias have made the internet search but a couple of landrovers and a mercedes.
-

Nissan Pathfinder Armada is one to consider too...don't think I'd want to see what 8k would bring for one but hey ya never know...

The 2004 Durango beat all of those in a Car and Driver Road test 2004 Chevy Tahoe vs. Dodge Durango, Ford Expedition, Nissan Pathfinder Armada, Toyota Sequoia - Comparison Tests ...I'm just sayin'.
