Pit-Tek race body work (Updated, day 3)

Installation, Day 1.

WOW! what a POS kit! I was not expecting much for the price but I'm concerned that a company has the right to sell this kind of stuff. I'm pretty good with fiberglass, so I did not want to pay the extra $ for the SHARKSKINZ - but if you want a set of fairings that fit easily, stay away from pit-tek! I'm still happy with my purchase as I enjoy working on the bike, but a lot of fitting and buffing is involved.

Here are some pictures of what I did today.

The pre-drilled holes were so far off the mark that I just got rid of them. I'll have to make new tabs tomorrow. Here's the way the tail fit if I had used the pre-drilled holes.Click image for larger version

Here's how far off-set it was Click image for larger version

I had to make a bracket for the tail section, as there was only 2 screws holding it. It was also necessary to get rid of all the plastic in the factory sub-frame for the tail section to slide into place. It's OK, but I'll have to come up with something to hold the battery in place....

The fuel tank was OK.. Just a little sanding here and there and voilą! I'll grab more pics tomorrow.

Day 2:

Going well. Everything is on the bike. Looks like the front fender came from another bike.... Doesn't fit well at all. I also had to get rid of the coolant overflow tank for the upper to fit

I'm happy with the fit of the tail section AFTER the modification I made to it Click image for larger version

Tomorrow I should be done with the fine tuning and I'll be ready for paint. I think the biggest challenge will be the battery holding bracket I'll have to come up with....

Day 3:

OK, I'm done.
Overall assessment- Well, you get what you pay for. I think that the price is right. For 375$ I got EVERYTHING, tank cover included. I think that the SHARKSKINZ are around $1000 CA without the tank cover.

I had to re-glass some tabs to secure the tail section in place. I made a small bracket to hold my PC3 and speedo healer. All I need to do now is figure out something for the battery. I'll work on that next week.

I re-glassed all the areas around the attachment points, just to add some thickness and make sure it would hold up. I don't think it was absolutely necessary, but better safe than sorry. The front fender did require reinforcement..... nothing major but if you don't do fiberglass I don't recommend you getting this brand of fairing kit.

Re: Pit-Tek race body work

Wow, sure glad I bought Sharkskinz. :P

I kept my stock battery box / inner cowl but I had to hacksaw off the right-side "wing".

If I trip over a pile of money in the near future I'd like to buy the HRC subframe / battery box combo. They go for about $800USD

Re: Pit-Tek race body work

I'm still glad I got these. I like working on the bike and also like having 700 $ in my pocket....

I thought about cutting the "wings" but I'd rather have the possibility of putting the bike in stock trim without having to explain anything to a potential buyer...

I'm guessing a 10 minute job to fit the old tail section and Veronique seat in place

From your post, it seems alot like the Godfather skins on Kawboy's bike. They will work with some work. Looks good though. Are you going to paint then yourself or send them off to be painted?

I'm going to paint them myself at the factory (boat). I'm hopping to do it in 2 or 3 weeks from now.

You should do one of those Glitter paint jobs like bass boats have.

Just like a fiberglass boat.

Seeing how far off the fiberglass was in the pics reminds me the guy, Canadian guy, who took his TV in for repair becuse all of the shows were 10 minutes late.

So take that bike back to Honda they got all of the mounts in wrong.

Nice review JBD, Looks like I will be buying something other than that stuff as I have NO idea how to make Fiberglass work right... Unless you want a "side job" next time you are in penetang?

Good price though.

Northern, I heard Armour Bodies is doing good product and they are in Ontario, so you'd save on custom...

Good work, jetb!
Other than the hole alignment issues, how would you rate the body work?
Is it good structurally? Are you filling and sanding much for paint prep?

I would rate them...... 3 out of 10.... because of the price....

Again, it all depends what you are looking for. If you're are willing to work A FEW DAYS just to put them on the bike, re-glass some section and sand some other... well it's a good deal.

If you are looking for bolt on parts then, NO!!!!

I'm not even sure the they would hold up good in a crash.... But I don't really want to find out.

No filling was required except for a small area on the tail section. As far as sanding goes, well I had to sand the bad primer job they did, but that took only 2 hours.

Re: Pit-Tek race body work (Updated, day 3)

Well, I'm reconsidering installing the race body work after all..... I just called my insurance company and I can have FULL coverage on track days, as long as I'm not "racing". I'm afraid that if something happen and that the bike is set-up with race fairing, numbers and everything that they will just tell me to forget about it .....

I might just keep the repsol fairing on and if I crash claim it to the insurance... Not sure what to do anymore....

Re: Pit-Tek race body work (Updated, day 3)

I don't think that's a real concern.

Use the race fairings because they're easier to put on and take off so it's easier to work on the bikes.

Re: Pit-Tek race body work (Updated, day 3)

Yeah, the fairings on your bike don't constitute racing. It would be quite simple to prove whether the event was a sanctioned, timed race or just simply a track day or school.
They should be happier with the fiberglass as it would cost less to replace than the OEM units.

If your policy specifically states you are covered on the track for any activity other than racing, you'll be fine.
