Review: Avon Viper Sport

So I am going to give these a try on my sport touring CBR1000RR (the throttlemeister makes it 'touring' )

For reference the last set was Dunlop Qualifiers and I got 4200 miles out of them and have the rear at the wear bar in the center. That is almost all street use, the exception being a two up with LTL at the controls for McAdx days at Grattan '07. I could go a bit further but they would get dodgy in rain and I am planning a long ride that would exceed the tread left and then some. The Dunlop rear has a diameter of 24.81" with a tread depth of 5.55mm, the front as a diameter of 23.80" with a tread depth of 3.175mm. (Dunlop specs from website)

The Avon rear has a diameter of 24.50" with a tread depth of 5mm, the front as a diameter of 23.60" with a tread depth of 3mm. With the depths coming from my measurement with 1mm resolution.

So the tire diameters are close but the Avon is a bit shorter with the back losing .05 more than the front. Fairly negligible, especially for street use.

I am running the Honda recommended 36PSI front, 42 PSI rear to start.

I plan on updating wear and more reviews as I run them but for now here is the look when new. I will provide grip review etc. For reference I feel that I ride at a very conservative pace on the road. When I hit the hills or a place like the dragon I tend to do corner speed with little or no brakes rather than accelerate and brake. While I do head across the flats to get to mountains I am on the edge of a lot of fun riding from sweepers to switchbacks.

More as I put my on

So this is a pre-review review?

Nope, a place holder with the starting pics. I plan on updating every 500ish miles with impressions and pictures of the tire so others can see wear, etc.

760 miles and I got a 1 inch gas in the rear. I plan on getting a new rear and continuing the test.

So far I can say I like the turn in. The profile seems to be very evenly curved. This makes a bit more effort as they don't fall in like a lot of sport tires. However on the road that is nice as you have to pick it up or down as the turn develops at times and the linear change is a nice feeling.

Grip was more than adequate for me. I had some chicken strip at the end but did have them down past the side snakes. When leaned over I never felt anything but confidence and in the few times I picked the throttle up quick (yes I am road riding not track riding) the back did not seem to slip at all. The front was planted and neutral. It might have been my imagination but the slide geometry change seemed to be a plus. When accelerating it did not seem to want to squat like before.

Turn in was also very good compared to my old tires but that is to be expected as they were overly squared.

So far I am very pleased with the tire although I was interested in wear and 760 is not enough to get a decent impression. I should be able to get a new rear and with only 760 on the front just continue the test.

OK so now I have about 1500 on the front and 1000ish on the new rear. Attached is some pics. Grip is more than adequate for me on the street and warm up is fast. Not had them in rain yet so no idea though I expect no surprises. Basically I like these tires and from appearance they are going to last a long while. It will be more obvious at about the 3K mark.

I think you should take them out in the rain and flog the hell out of them.... just in the interest of science.

I'm running these on my 900 (been running Avons for years) and I agree that they warm up fast and stick great for my riding. I'm waiting to see how long they last, but the older ST 45/46's I have run lasted about twice as long as the BT-014 that I've tried.

Please keep us informed as to tire tread life. I only have a bout 1,000 miles on my set so far, and they still look brand new.

I currently have about that on mine (more on the front due to the rear getting cut) After the planned Blue on Blue tour I will have a great indication on life as I should be up around 3K and average across a few brands seems to be 4K. Granted the BoB tour will slant mileage to the sides a bit more but it will still be close.

More pics with about 3K on the rear and 3.5K on the front. The picture with two tires is comparing the almost new rear that got a flat, current tire is on the left. I got a set of Pirellis to burn after this but so far I have to say these are great tires. Unless the wear accelerates I think I will get 5K plus out of them and I usually get 4K out of just about anything else.

Oh and I ran them through tropical storm Fay and while it was mostly straight line at decent speed they performed well. Not a bit loose feeling even running at 80 in rain. One time I hydroplaned a bit changing lanes but I expected it as I was 60+ and it was visible standing water at a time the downpour was real heavy. Even then no issue.

3500 on the back, 4K on the front. Both showing a touch of flat but the front can go forever it seems. The back is great considering I have replaced previous tires at 4K for various brands and that one can go much farther than 500 miles.

looks like there's plenty of tread left on them.

Just got the 900RR back on the road. Now I can get some miles on these tires as well.
