Prayers for a Former Co-Worker

Stephanie used to work in my department. Details from email below.-tigerblade
Quote:

Please pray for my family. Tonight my sister-in-law, Stephanie, took my nieces Claire and Natalie to choir practice at church and on their way home they were stopped to turn left and were rear ended. Their Jeep was engulfed in flames. Stephanie got Natalie (3) out while a passer by got Claire (8) out. Claire was on fire and they got her into the grass to get the flames out. She has 2nd and 3rd degree burns on her back, right arm, hand and leg. She is currently at University Hospital in Columbia, MO and they are in surgery to remove the skin and medicate the wounds. Stephanie and Natalie are both having CAT scans. Natalie was originally checked out and released but then later vomited so they decided to do a CAT scan. Stephanie has been disoriented and in shock since the accident – she repeatedly asks the same questions and doesn’t seem to comprehend the answers. My parents are there and thankfully they all have a wonderful church family who is with them as well. Tommy & Stephanie have a Bible study group who they are close with and my folks said most of them are at the hospital right now. Please pray for Claire as she endures the pain of the burns and the procedures to help her heal. I’m sure it will be a long process. Also, please pray for Stephanie and Natalie and the results of their CAT scansandfor my brother as he tries to be there for his family. We thank God that they are all alive.

Re: Prayers for a Former Co-Worker

Update:

Quote:

Luke and I drove to Columbia today and got here about 2:30. Natalie spent the day with Papa and seemed to do pretty well. She does know there was an accident and she comments on it every so often. Stephanie is doing much better. She still has no memory of the accident but she is more about herself today and did get to go up to the Burn Unit in a wheel chair and see Claire for a little while. Steph is sore and complains of her back and head hurting but the CAT scan showed no problems and she will likely be released tomorrow.

Claire is in the ICU Burn Unit which is brand new in Columbia – it has only been open for a few weeks. I got to scrub and put on a gown and go in to see her a couple of times. The first time she was sleeping – finally getting some much needed rest. Her right arm and leg are fully covered in bandages as well as her shoulder, back and part of her abdomen. She also has a pea sized puncture wound on the top of her left thigh and another on her pelvic bone that I guess must have had something to do with the seat belt. The second time I went in they had to prick her finger to test her blood sugar and she woke crying. I was by her side and she opened her eyes and smiled at me. I told her I loved her and she said, "I love you too." She says she itches and is also discomforted by the neck brace she is still wearing. They did a CAT scan on her and it still hadn’t been read when I left at 11pm. They said they would leave it on her for as long as her neck was still tender even if the CAT scan came back clear.

Here’s where we really need concentrated prayer – they will be grafting skin on her right leg tomorrow morning at 8am. After much conversation with the doctors, they have decided to take the donor skin from her scalp. Because she is so young they feel this is the best choice as she continues to grow. Any scaring will be hidden by her hair when it grows back. As you can imagine, she was not too keen on having her head shaved but I told her of my own accident as a girl just her age and they took my hair as well but it grew back. She was worried about going to school ‘bald’ and we told her we’d get her some great hats. She informed us that hats weren’t allowed in school but Tommy assured her he’d already gotten approval from her teacher. She has been in a fair amount of pain even though they’ve been controlling it with morphine and the nurses tell us that she will likely be in much more pain after the grafting is done. The donor site tends to be even much more painful than the burn site soon after the surgery. This is a lot for a little girl to handle but Claire has been doing great. The nurses love her and she even made them laugh today. She wanted to see Natalie and they told her that no one under 12 was allowed in to which she said – "I’m under 12."

Update:

Quote:

Our day has been somewhat up and down. The nurses came in this morning and cut Claire’s hair as short as they could with scissors and as then took her in for her surgery. When they got the bandages off they decided that they needed a larger donor area than her scalp so they ended up taking the skin from her inner thigh. We wished they had known that before her hair was cut to about ½ an inch but it will grow back. They grafted to her outer thigh and calf on her right leg and she came through that well. However, as they had said, she was in a lot of pain through the day. They keep the room very hot as it is difficult for her body to regulate heat but she goes in spells of being terribly hot and uncomfortable. She is also upset when they put medicines down her feeding tube as it tended to back up in her throat and she could taste it. She also feels itchy so they’ve been giving her benadryl. She was generally in pain and agitated until early afternoon when they finally gave her some morphine and she settled down to sleep. The next time I went in to see her she was the best she’d been so far. She smiled and me and we chatted for a while. She said, ‘Missy, they cut my hair
L,’ ‘I know,’ I said ‘but it will grow back and we’re just so happy that you’re still here with us!’ ‘Alive, you mean,’ she said, ‘I am too.’ I felt really good about that. She does already see the good in the situation. They will take the bandages off her 2nd degree burns tomorrow or Thursday and they will put her under general anesthetic again on Monday to take the dressing off her graft and donor site. If that goes well, she may leave the hospital next Wednesday. She will need to go in weekly to have her dressings changed for a while and they will also put a compression sleeve on her leg for about a year.

Stephanie was released today and she, Tommy and Natalie will be staying with my folks for now. Steph is still recovering and it will be easier for all once Claire comes home and will need constant care for a while. Mom has only left the hospital for a few hours Monday – they bring a bed in the room for her at night and Claire is comforted by her. Please pray for Mom as she is tired, but wouldn’t be anywhere else.

Thank you for all of your kind messages and prayers. We do believe in the power of prayer and Claire was thrilled when I told her that she was on prayer chains in other states! Until the next update . . .

Update:

Good evening. I have a lot of good news tonight! I’ll start off by letting you know that Natalie is doing fine. She is back in a more normal routine and doing well. Stephanie went to the doctor today and was medically released. She is sore and bruised but otherwise seems to be physically well. That is a blessing!

Claire has gotten her neck collar off! This has made her much more comfortable. They also took the catheter out, had to put it back in because she couldn’t go and now have it back out again. She has gotten up to go to the bathroom which is great. Her blood sugar is better so they are only checking it every two hours now instead of every hour which is a little better. She is getting a shot in her stomach twice a day to prevent blood clots which is very painful – mom said she begs her not to let them do it. L In general though, I’m told she was in pretty good spirits today. Noah, Luke and I will head to Columbia after work tomorrow so I’ll have a first hand account again tomorrow night. Please continue to pray for Claire and also pray for us as we travel. It’s about 2 ½ hours from our house to Columbia.

Re: Prayers for a Former Co-Worker

Update:

Quote:
Thank you for all of your prayers today! The doctor told mom that the graft on Claire’s leg looked pretty good but that there were still a couple of spots that needed some additional healing. Therefore, they put her in a soft cast but they did take out the wound vac that was draining off fluid from the area. She was hoping to be able to take a shower but she can’t do that with the soft cast on, however, she will not need more grafting on her leg! That is good news. He also looked at her back and has not yet decided if it will need any grafting – they are going to wait and see for a few more days. He said they had taken the staples out but we didn’t know there were any staples! I guess they were in her leg. He said the keys to Claire being able to go home were: 1. Her mobility 2. How well she’s eating 3. Her ability to cope without IV pain medication.
