I've Lost a Friend

I was reluctant to post this - We've frankly had enough bad news already this year. But I feel the need to tell someone. I think you folks will understand.

My friend Jim was killed early Monday morning, September 10. He was a truck driver, and sometimes pulled overnight delivery assignments. He was on such a trip very early on Monday morning when his truck went off the road near Dayton, Ohio.

I met Jim when he simply wandered in to our Church one morning. I never figured out what prompted him to come there, but I'm glad he did. We quickly became friends when we discovered a mutual interest in cycles - Jim owned five of them, an R1, two Buells, an ATK 2-stroke desert bike, and a Yamaha motard. We rode together a little, and talked a lot: Bikes, politics, religion, and anything else that came to mind.

I last saw Jim two weekends ago - He was riding a friend's Royal Enfield, a beautiful old-school British bike. I still have a picture of it on my phone.

Jim knew I was somewhat conflicted about the sport, and kept gently encouraging me to get another bike. He would have happily loaned me one of his bikes, but I was always 'too busy' to ride. I regret this now.

Folks - Don't take your friends for granted.

Jim: I'm going to miss you, buddy.

Steve, I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. Other than family, there are few things to cherish in life more than a friendship. You and Jim will be in our prayers.
