If you had only a short time to live...

what would you tell those that you love? And why are you waiting?

This was something I heard years ago and it has stuck with me. Listening to the eulogy's at funerals lately and comments here about lost friends I hope we've said everything we should have while we had the opportunity. Did they know how tall they were in our eyes? Sometimes we can do so much damage with our words. I know I have anyway.

Whats really neat is to say something to someone in a way that lifts them up, something that's real and that they will remember more than any condemnation they've heard before. The look in their eyes when they receive it because they know it's what you feel.

I'm getting old and sentimental now...maybe a bit less of a jackass too. We'll see...

Ain't that the truth. Sure are a lot of things I'd like to go back and un-say

I'm a well intention jackass most of the time. I know what I feel and I appreciate people around me. It's just when I try to express what I feel, most times it comes out different... I make myself understood after a few misunderstandings though.

I totally believe in this, especially with my kids. A few years back, I gave each of them a Father's Day card, saying it was me who should be thanking them for the blessing of being the dad of such great young people.

Just in the last two months:

A friend my age (we played in a band together in college) was diagnosed with lung cancer and was given a year to live. I was going to get out to CA to see him after his chemo treatment, but he died of heart failure a week later.

A man who teaches watercolor with my wife at the local art center got some kind of infection that traveled to his kidneys and spine. In less than two weeks of showing any symptoms, he died.

An older motorcycle racer that Frank and I know had an industrial accident in his shop, and has been in the hospital for the last 6 weeks with brain damage from a closed head injury and many broken bones. They have to provide a 24 hour sitter with him because he is intent on doing away with himself.

I am beginning to realize that I may not get out of this world alive, or even on any kind of convenient schedule. So yeah, I try to keep that in mind and to let my friends and family know how I feel about them - it can happen any time. I guess I have to get out and ride more.

Sitting- I actually did that many times while I was working at a rehab hospital in high school and college. It is among the most sobering set of experiences I've had in life. I can tell you with certainty there are far worse things than dying.

Don't leave things unfinished with loved ones, and do the things that make you happy.

Figure out what you'd do if you won the lottery, and work on it without the ticket.

We DO have only a short time to live. Even if we end up living into our eighties or nineties, life is too short, and we squander so much time during our best years.

And as has been inferred here, you never know what day will be your last. It could be today. Take care of business, and make sure your friends and family know that you love them. Do the things you've always wanted to do; don't keep putting them off, or someday you'll be too old, or too tired, or too poor, or too busy...

On a slightly different note, why post this in "Religion"? Does it not apply to everyone, regardless of their faith?

only because it had the potential to go that direction and I wanted responses from people who were brave enough to post here.

I've been thinking a lot about this and I still don't know. This past summer I lost a grandmother and a cousin within a month of each other. Grandma was expected, my cousin was in his 30's, healthy and full of life. Last winter I had an opportunity to visit grandma, and I didn't. I did see my cousin right around then but it was a hectic time so we didn't talk much.

Death has been around me since a pretty early age. I guess what I've learned and have tried to do over the years is to spend as much time with loved ones as possible. In the long run those memories are all you have. People won't remember gifts but they'll remember a conversation over dinner or an adventure you were both a part of.

My cousin took me for my very first motorcycle ride at the age of 5 or so. He was also there for my first race at Nelson's Ledges back in 2006 and was cheering me on like I was Valentino Rossi. Sadly I don't have too many other memories with him due to difference in age and mostly geographical separation but those two memories I will carry with me until the day I die. I can only hope to leave such a lasting impression on the few people that I'm fortunate enough to call my friends.

so the good news is you're going to heaven!

the bad news is you're leaving in about 20 minutes . . .

(unfortunately not so unusual)

After noodling on this for a while, and being in the same place as yourself WRT this all I can say is that there may be some lesson we can apply and after doing better, make up for some of the loss we feel we have. Especially if we keep these people in our hearts as we try to do better. I think it would be a nice tribute to them... and ease at least in a small way some sense of regret if we feel they would approve.
