    stoner or the package?

I don't know how to start a poll but was wondering how many think it was Stoner his bike and or tires.

I routed for hayden and rossi but loved watching the kid kick ass this year. I was a fan when he rode 250's and hoped he would do well in GP.

I think the main factor this year was his reliability not to make mistakes and his bikes reliability.

I wonder if the honda engineers will sleep this off season.

All of the above. Capirossi had pretty much the same package, but didn't do as well. I think Rossi's a better rider, but Casey rode damn well and seemed to do a great job of working with his crew to produce a consistent winning setup, both in qualifying and in racing.

Its a combo of the package and the rider. A rider has to be good enough to take advantage of the package him and his team puts together...I dont care what anyone says...TC or not, you cant just twist the throttle and go fast consistently.

    Re: stoner or the package?

Capirossi admitted that his riding style didn't agree with the software they implemented. He is older, more set in his ways, and has a ham fist. He said, due to the electronics package, that the window to ride the bike in is quite narrow and it takes finesse.

Stoner deserves his championship. IMHO, he had a nice motor advantage, especially at the beginning of the season. The factory Ducatis also have the best electronics package in the paddock, and they were using the better tire supplier this year as Michelin lost the plot. His team was also excellent as they would have the bike setup for the weekend on the first day most weekends, which is no small thing in this sport. Having said all that, Casey rode extremely well and is a deserving champion. He kept his focus every lap of the year which is the toughest thing to do. He had a bit of luck too as I don't remember him having a single DNF. He rode a brilliant season and his worst finish was 6th. I think he was on the podium 14 out of 18 races. He definitely had the best package in the paddock by quite a fair margin and I've never seen a top speed difference between bikes like I did at the beginning of the season, but he deserves his place in history. He rode a cold, calculating season where he blew the doors off of everyone. Hopefully next year we'll get to see him go wheel to wheel with Pedrosa, Rossi, Hayden, etc. Next year is going to be really good as there are a few really good rookies coming into the series.

Next year is gonna be good because Honda got smoked, and so did Vale.

The package, which included Stoner won.

Just like every year the best package wins.

Why talk about Stoner's package? Ya'll are scarin' me.
...dude you ride an offroad bike with slicks, 1/2 the weight of a GS, double the suspension, with a browning 50 cal going off 32" from your skull as a daily freaking driver - I'd expect anything except a nitro dragbike to be bland by comparison - SSG

    Re: stoner or the package?

I concur, stoner is very much deserving of this title, be it the package or just him. (I believe it is the package as well) He is not the paper champion that hodgson got labeled from 2003 in WSBK where his only competition was Xaus. Stoner battled, he fought, he rode well and went faster everywhere than the fastest in 2006 with 190cc less displacement and the same weight.

I thought the electronics made the bike child's play to ride?

Hamfist? Dude... Stoner is the biggest hamfist of them all. I have a theory that the Magnetti Marelli Ducati system rewards hamfist balls-out riding... Which is Stona's forte.

At this level or racing, it's about which team is most in harmony. The engineers, mechanics and rider were as close as it gets to being in perfect sync within that team. Does this "take away" from Stoner? No way. He is as integral part of the package. Big congrats to him and his team!!!

Watching Marco Melandri struggle during early testing of his 2008 Ducati MotoGP bike reminded me of how often Loris Capirossi struggled last year . . . even while Casey Stoner was running away with a race win. Even a Ducati MotoGP race representative has been quoted as saying Stoner made all the difference.
Something fairly objective like top speed on the straight can be measured and compared to the competition, but Capirossi already seems more at ease with his new Suzuki and Melandri seems thus far clueless about how to ride the Ducati quickly. Perhaps, it was Stoner's talent much more than his machinery that gave him an advantage last year.
