MotoGP Indy 2008: Town of Speedway proposes noise ordinance.

Looks like the town of Speedway is getting started early by proposing a noise ordinance. Sounds like they heard RedRider was coming...

Like any story, there's a lot of history to this. It's going to be interesting to see how it all plays out...

I can tell you how it will play out. Just like the night before the Indy race or the Nascrap race, you will find about 300 motorcycles in the speedway gas station raising hell with the drunks at the track. There is no way possible for the speedway pigs to enforce this at all. Maybe one or 2 individuals, but not enough to make any difference at all. Now that the town has drawn the line in the sand, the local bike night crowd will make certain to do the "Squid Mating Call" as much as they can in retaliation and even more once one of their buddies gets a ticket. It just boggles my mind that stupid people buy a house by one of the oldest tracks in North America and expect peace and quiet during race time. Assholes I tell ya.

WTHR - Indianapolis News and Weather - Speedway nixes plans for motorcycle rules

Speedway nixes plans for motorcycle rules

Updated: Aug 9, 2008 08:17 PM EDT

Speedway - Town leaders in Speedway put the brakes on two proposed ordinances to tone down motorcycle noise.
The rule change would have made it illegal for bikers to rev their engines and park motorcycle trailers on city streets during the Moto GP race at IMS on September 14. But, according to Channel 13's newsgathering partners at The Indianapolis Star, Speedway leaders plan to withdraw the ordinances Monday amid concerns the town was targeting bikers and not welcoming the new race at the track.
Update...

Edit: Please note, in this context, "Speedway" refers to the town of Speedway, not IMS.

They could not enforce it anyway.

What a bunch of f*cktards. Yeah, I'm sick of hearing about people moving or building/buying near a race track then b*tching about noise. Hello! These are the same f*cktards who charge people $50 to park in their yard for a day.

That track has been there for 100 years, maybe Tony George needs to start handing out free clues to people who live by his track! Nobody would give two sh*ts about that town if that track wasn't there. Townies are ignorant most of the time.

Here's a little follow-up on the story...

Speedway sees no need to regulate MotoGP
By Josh Duke

Speedway leaders don't anticipate changing any laws prior to deal with crowds at next year's Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP event.
Speedway Police Chief Jeffery Dine said officers made just four arrests in town over the weekend, which is fewer than a typical non-event weekend.

He said they also had no complaints from local residents regarding noise or parking -- two issues they were warned could be a problem by organizers of other motorcycle events.

Town leaders even considered two ordinances in July intended to head off noise and parking problems. However, after receiving concerns the ordinances unfairly targeted motorcyclists leaders dropped them last month.

Town leaders intended to possibly reconsider them after this inaugural event, but now feel that probably won't be necessary, said Town Manager Barbara A. Lawrence.

FWIW, I've never had an easier time getting into or out of any large scale event like this before in my life. Outstanding setup and control for entry and exit.

Never really saw any squidly behavior either (other than a couple of mating calls).

Did you guys happen to notice any signs around town? I saw "Ride proud, not loud" on Crawfordville Road. I felt that probably targetted the fat Harley crowd. Considering I was on the top road with my back to 16th street. I heard more Harleys than crotch rockets......

Also saw several signs warning motorists to watch out for increased motorcycle traffic. Good for Indy!

And a little more post-race...

Town officials see bigger MotoGP ahead | IndyStar.com | The Indianapolis Star

Town officials see bigger MotoGP ahead
By Josh Duke September 18, 2008

Other than the weather, the inaugural Red Bull Indianapolis Moto Grand Prix couldn't have gone much better for Speedway, town officials said.
Town Manager Barbara A. Lawrence and Police Chief Jeffery Dine said the town prepared well for the event, and they don't see a need to reintroduce controversial ordinances that would have restricted motorcycle noise and trailer parking.

Speedway police officers made just four arrests over the weekend, which is fewer than a typical non-event weekend, Dine said. Police also received no complaints from residents regarding noise or parking -- two issues organizers of other motorcycle events warned could be a problem.
Town leaders considered the ordinances in July based on recommendations from other communities. After receiving concerns the ordinances targeted motorcyclists unfairly, the Town Council dropped them last month.
Dine estimated a crowd of 91,000 for Sunday's MotoGP, about a quarter of the crowds police cope with for the Indianapolis 500 and the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard.

Poor weather helped in policing the event, Dine said, because fewer people ventured into the wind and rain from the dying gasps of Hurricane Ike. The town also placed a lighted billboard asking motorcycle visitors entering town on Crawfordsville Road "to ride proud and not loud."
Dine expects more people and more challenges next year, especially with it scheduled in August.

"They did have the other side events Downtown and in Broad Ripple that had people coming and going from here," he said, "but we do expect the event to get bigger in the future."

One change he would suggest for 2009 is a cycle-only lane at Gate 3 outside turn two. Dine said a bottleneck occurred at that gate, with fans entering and motorcyclists returning after taking vendor-sponsored demonstration rides.

Lawrence hopes the community can provide attractions to enhance the fan experience next year to keep more people in Speedway during the weekend.

Fwiw, I spoke with a group of ISP officers on Monday morning. Anecdotally, they said it was one of the most peaceful races they can recall, mostly due to the smaller size of the crowd and the inclement weather.

They also noted that there were NO motorcycle fatalities over the weekend, and that they experienced very few problems with riders in general. Their biggest issues came from "aggressive SUV drivers". (that's a quote)

They were impressed by the demeanor of the crowd, and speculated that "if you rode this far in the rain, you probably had a good head on your shoulders". While I see some reason to question the logic, I think the sentiment is on the mark...

That's what we saw on our way in on Saturday. An SUV tried it's level best to drive through the side of a car at the intersection of Exit 17 and 30th St.

When we passed by, they had already cut the roof off the car but you could see that the driver side doors were in the middle of the car.

I have to agree with ISP observations. Sure, there were one or two aggressive motorcyclists but I saw more aggressive moves from cagers.

The comraderie of motorcyclists was palpable - I think it was moreso because of the weather conditions. It was kind of cool going the whole weekend on two wheels and it translated over to "real life" as I drove the cage yesterday for the first time in a week.

I hit several of the venues and the only place I saw relatively heavy alcohol consumption crossed with motorcycling was at the Mile. It was good to see the advisory signs over the interstates telling motorists to watch for increased motorcycle traffic. And you could always tell when you were getting close to one of the event locations by the "Ride Proud, Not Loud" signs

I think that's an extension of the "cruisers are the only type of motorcycle" stereotype. There aren't too many ear-blasting sport-tourers out there but that's not the type of bike non-riders associate when they think of motorcycles.

Great fun and looking forward to this as an annual event!
