McCain backs ban on affirmative action in Arizona...Now Obama doing a "Feeler"

It's about time a prominent politician in this country had the balls to oppose this racist merde.

Quote:
The proposed referendum in Arizona involves a constitutional amendment to bar preferential treatment by public entities on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity or national origin. Supporters say the measure levels the playing field, giving everyone an equal chance at every job.
Exactly. Affirmitive action is institutionalized, government sponsored racism. Period. It is an abomination and mockery of a system where the government and supreme court tell us all we're supposed to be color blind.

Still, I wonder if this will help him in the election?

When I contributed to his campaign and was considering volunteering for him in 2000, it seemed he had a more moderate position. I looked it up, and sure enough:
From Digg:
Quote:
This is in contrast to McCain’s earlier stance on affirmative action - “The federal government should continue affirmative action programs only if such programs do not include quotas” and “The Federal Government should consider affirmative action programs if ordered by a court to rectify specific programs.” as recorded at Ontheissues.org. He has also voted to maintain a program that encourages the awarding of 10 percent of spending on highway construction to women and minorities.

Without debating the merit of the AZ proposal (about which McCain even admitted he wasn't familiar with the details*) I'll just put this out there -

When he sold his soul to Karl Rove, he didn't drive a very good bargain. If he's elected, I hope he isn't directly in charge of any important negotiations. He clearly sucks at it.

Quote:
* Associated Press is reporting that Republican Presidential candidate John McCain now supports banning affirmative action. On Sunday, McCain was asked if he supported an effort to get a referendum on the ballot in Arizona that would “do away with affirmative action.” McCain’s response was “Yes, I do,” even though he admitted he has not seen the details of the proposal

Did you read the article? Might've saved you some trouble. Both of these candidates are soiling themselves with the pandering:

Quote:
His reversal comes as McCain seeks to tailor his policies and rhetoric to independent-minded voters who will determine the outcome of November election. Both McCain and Obama have accused each other — with good reason — of "flip-flopping," a charge that carries weight with voters seeking consistency and authenticity in their political leaders.

No doubt - I'm well aware of it. And I read the article more thoroughly than McCain read the proposal he's backing...

In general, I'm less troubled by a drift to the middle than a drift to the edges.

All you have to do is apologize for slavery and give me my reparations and I'll back the ban on affirmative action right along side you.

The middle is not always good. If you had Hitler and Tojo then I would want to be far right of both of them (yes they were leftists). If you had David Duke and John McCain I might consider the middle OK (or even much nearer McCain) The desire to be in the middle is like "for the children" it generally gives me a chill.

If I didn't know you were the world's nicest guy, your political reasoning would give me a chill. Tojo, the leftist imperial godhead emperor. Hitler, the anticommunist leftist.

I'll be happy to contribute to an effort to have you educated on the history of 20th century politics on this particular planet. (I'll double it if basic composition skills are included.) You have to get at least a B- though.

Fixed it for you Are you arguing that they were extreme right (the argument would still hold) After all both were for big government, socialists (less so Tojo I think) and control freaks just like the american left

He wanted an apology so I gave him the one that was appropriate... I apologized for not being able to apologize.... then offered to return his bike cover

Yeah, but your ilk did.

Seriously, I think apologies and reparations for something that occurred hundreds of years ago is silly and wasteful. And affirmative action was the typical American overreaction to a terrible situation during terrible times. However, if you step back to look at it, the apology makes a bit of sense.

If someone claims you did them wrong and continue to treat them like crap and you apologize and make the effort to move on, what other choice do they have but to quit complaining and blaming you for their problems and actually move on?

The King of Spain apologized to the Sephardic Jewish community for the expulsion and subsequent Inquisition, torture, rape, murder, theft of property and goods - you know, the usual.

His apology was offered on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of those events, in 1992. Sorry my Grandparents didn't live to hear it.

Even though it took 5 centuries, it was surprisingly meaningful for those who are descended from the people so expelled.

That Juan Carlos is OK - I can still do without Alonso and Pedrosa, though.

He saved Spain in 1982 from a Coup d'état.
He recently told Chavez, the president of Venezuela, to shut up; live on camera.
He is a motorcycle rider.

I don't understand why Spain, nor any other country for that matter, needs a monarchy. But all things considered, he's all right, I guess.

Spain has done a lot of things we're not proud off. Some we'll admit.

True of any great nation unfortunately.

The apology, what the heck. It certainly has no downsides. Slavery is a blight on our history, if this helps someone, great.

I've said more than a little bit on this one to a few people in charge of scholarships at Idaho State. My 3.7 in HS got me nothing. It wasn't until I had 4 semesters in a row above 3.8 in college that the scholarships started coming in. At ISU they have a board with listings of all the available scholarships and there is easily 10 to 1 available for minorities and there aren't that many minorities in Pocatello, Idaho. I plan to donate money for a few scholarships to ISU when I can afford but they won't let me say that they are only for single white males who have worked their butts off. I can make them purely merit based though and may the highest GPA win.
