I'd say the Constitution is written more to establish the rights of citizens against the tyranny of rulers.

While individual rights (real and implied) are specified, it doesn't exactly provide for the right of a citizen to opt out of the decisions that his republic-style elected government has undertaken.

While it is impossible to disagree with all of his sentiment, there's a ton of hyperbole that comes from the false premise that the Republic was formed in order that he would get to do whatever the fuck he wants.

That sounds about right.

Our culture is individualistic to the extreme, but they certainly also expect the citizen to obey the laws of the land.

OK, we'll be right over.
I mostly agree but would frame it slightly different. The constitution was written to loan a limited amount of power (and thus freedoms) in a hope that the benefit would out weigh the loss. The question is not whether he can opt out but rather did the government exceed its limits (it frequently has). Now where is that sheep in a tin foil hat smiley........

Where do you get this stuff?

The Constitution should be read in light of the Declaration of Independence -

Seems to say exactly what I did. Government is created for mutual protection at a cost of freedoms. That same government is only valid by consent (ie the Constitution) Thus the limited powers enumerated within that consent document are valid and binding until consent is withdrawn by consensus. Power exercised outside of the consent document are invalid.
We already had the G__ Given rights which evil tries to take, government does not grant us anything. Most of the time government takes "are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights"

Maybe you need tinfoil to filter out the cosmic rays

Close. More accurately, I think you could say positive law is created for mutual protection at the expense of individual freedoms; government is charged with enacting and enforcing said laws.
