The "Middle Mush"

Political Pulse | The Associated Press-Yahoo! News Poll on Yahoo! News

Pretty interesting article. I don't fit the "less educated" or disengaged part, but otherwise as a rule, this is where I fall.

Quote:
This voting group's views cross some of the usual lines.
For instance, they overwhelmingly favor abortion rights and legal rights for same-sex couples, typically Democratic and liberal positions. But they also overwhelmingly say cutting taxes should be a high priority, typically a Republican and conservative refrain....

"All are a few points from the ideological center of the country, and they tend to be fiscally conservative and socially tolerant," said Greg Strimple, a Republican pollster in New York.
Yep yep.

Quote:
David Donovan, 31, a GOP-leaning independent from Crystal River, Fla., also is "not exactly thrilled with either of them."

McCain on foreign policy "just doesn't make a lot of sense," but Obama's "abundance of gun control" irks this gun owner, as does the Democrats' education platform. And, he says: "I think taxes suck."

Not that he has time to follow the campaign closely; Donovan travels 150 miles roundtrip to build bridges for 14 hours a day. The commute costs his one-income household $50 in tolls and $220 in fuel each week. He and his wife haven't had health care coverage for two years. She's on disability after seven mild strokes. Her student loan debt is growing.

"There are some days where I'd vote for Mickey Mouse for president," Donovan said. "It's got to be better than this."
No kidding.

The lady, has large loans, and has busted her ass, I mean worked incredibly hard, for over 9 years in education after high school to get to a point where she has strong earning potential. With her job offer she is facing the spectre of appallingly high tax rates. I came home to her ranting yesterday about yet another Obama middle class tax idea that will apply to us. She plans to go look at the tax code on married couples filing separate as together we're definitely right in line with Obama's gun sights as the people to blast the hardest with his wonderful ideas on "change".

Then she said, "On my run yesterday, I counted 14 f'ing Obama signs, and not one McCain, I'm finding one for our yard. Eff Obama and his taxes, they're f'ing with my marriage. And where the hell is McCain, the guy is never in the news."

This is a girl who in 5 years has a sum total of less political discussion than last night.

This election is definitely getting people's blood up.

Yep, that's me.

My view: The middle mush is getting their just desserts for not voting 3rd parts for years as they really wanted, but "didnt want to throw away their vote" so they kept up the Dem/Repub sham by voting for one of them.

LTL, the first quote hits my views exactly. Social liberal, fiscal conservative. I think that libertarianism has this viewpoint...

Funny enough though, in my voting life, California has been an easy place to vote third party if you are conservative leaning; has ANY non-moviestar Republican carried a statewide vote for anything since the last redistricting? (We did have Pete Wilson last...)

Have to go look that up...I've never felt my vote mattered at all in this state on issues larger than my district (and as a rule, voting no on all measures).

You and me both TCD.

I am that way, as well. While I hate the term "liberal" and the way Dems throw it around as 'forward thinking.' But I digress.

When I worked on a major Senate campaign in '06, I heard a very fitting quote: "I support Libertarianism, but I don' support Libertarians." I know a lot of the Paul-Bots drank the kool-aid from the fire house, but you can't tell me that leaving foreign policies to states is a wise idea.

I guess my point is that Libertarians have some great ideas and theories, but often times in practice or in the particular candidate, it falls short.

Are these people insinuating that every single American doesn't fall under 1 of 2 opposing sociopolitical ideologies? Good Heavens!

Let me know if she gets anywhere with that. I found that it's an even bigger curse no matter how I tried to lay things out.
