    Installing Engine Covers

I just received my case covers from Moto-R. Great product. They look really nice. Better than I expected.

Before I start my install I wanted to check for some advice. Love to hear some comments from those of you that have done this in the past.

    Thanks,

    HD

Take your time and be very careful when cleaning any gasket residue off your engine block. It's easy to gouge the aluminum if you're not careful.

Use a fine line of RTV sealer all around the edge of your cover. Make sure there's enough there to cover the whole thing, but if you put too much it will come out on the sides and look crappy.

Yup, what Z said. I used RTV Blue around where the wires come out when I put the new stator cover on my 929, in addition to a new paper gasket. And that magnetic pull is strong. I thought I was gonna pull the bike over on top of me!

there is some awesome clear silicon i picked up i think it is called pro bond 1211 or something, i will have to look at the container, but i use it on my atv motors when building them and it holds up great. after everything is bolted up you just wipe the excess and leave it alone. much better than the colored stuff. hold up to gas and alky

    then use the blue

at the time when i bought it i needed something that would be able to handle the base pressure of a overbored 2 stroke 500 with a ton of compression and on alky, so i wanted to make sure it was good and sealed.

The dude how made the covers said to put the silicon only on the case, not the cover.

Then I'd do that.. the gasket compound/silicone will hold the gasket in position, and the evenly applied, properly torqued bolts will keep the oil in. (I used Yamabond)

I think I used a razor blade and brake cleaner on a grey 3m pad to get the old gasket material off. Don't be tempted to scratch it off with anything that could damage the mating surfaces of the aluminum.

HD, I've used HondaBond before. It works well at sealing and holding the gasket in place. If you need to clean off the old material, try a plastic scraper found at hardware stores. It won't gouge or scratch the surfaces...
