Uneven firing order
There are some rumblings coming about the new Yamaha and possibly the Suzuki having a 1-2-1 firing order. This would be a forward step in production technology.

What is the significance of that for those who are not engine savvy?

I had that on my SV once - it went 2---2----2----2----2. I love production technology.

Uneven firing of the inline 4 engine. A vtwin motor goes 1-2-1-2-1-2, one piston hits, then the other. An inline engine, the pistons fire at the same time. A big bang motor staggers the firing order of an inline 4 engine. The effect of this is better traction, the tire hooks up better, more drive, kind of like a Vtwin. What this would do for a street rider, is give them a more rideable power delivery of such large HP. The side benefit is a killer exhaust note. I've been jonesing for Yam to do a production version of this ever since they went to the big bang firing order. Some people in the N/A motorcyle industry are hearing these rumbling about the new R1. We'll see. It's been discussed that the M1 uses 2-2, while a production R1 would use 1-2-1 for more reliability.

All is not lost. In spite of the OP's utter massacre of the subject matter, it is a very interesting topic. Fortunately there are a lot of articles and forum threads running (complete with accurate information) around the internet with which to "reclaim" your 90 seconds...

So... does a "long bang" L4 give the same 2nd-order vibrations as it's screamer cousin?

Hey, he may embellish his insider connections but at least he's not very accurate.

It's actually fun to toy with them as some of them claim to hook people with a lure or hook and enjoy it but they bite as hard as the rest of us. Motorcycles and the racing of them are behind closed doors business. These factories are as tight as a frog's ass. There are rumors of a V5 VFR, patents filed in England for it, now there is rumblings from some people in the N/A industry about a big-bang motor for Yamaha. Is it a crime to discuss such things? Some people on here act like talking about this stuff, on a motorcycle forum, is blasphemy, or they act like you just kicked their boyfriend in the balls. I heard this info from another forum, and googled the source since you requested it. 2009 Yamaha R1 speculation continues, big bang engine rumored - Hell For Leather Apparently the magazine MotoRevue is one such source on the topic. Just like MCN, purely speculative at this point.

Just to be clear, it's not the prognostication I have a problem with...quite the contrary. It's a great topic and speculation is one of the more entertaining facets of online forums...
My comment was directed at the technical inaccuracy and descriptive butchery. ![]() Carry on...
