    Safety wiring is a PITA

Don't get me wrong, I know why it's done, it's just no fun to do.

    That's it
    Happy wife, happy life.

Cobalt bits, drill press and patients make things go better.

Oil on the bits makes them drill faster and last much longer.

If I go I have 2 weeks to do it and the part I dread is the ones with fluid. Means I have to drain and bleed everything

Titanium bits (I think), Sheep's drill press and a 10 minute drive aren't bad either.

Cheap bits are a bad thing. I always get bits made for harder metals like stainless steel and it works like butter.

Not having a drill press I made a block to clamp in my vice. Its just a block with a bunch of threaded holes in it and Ijust screw the bolt in a hole and it holds well with out messing up any threads.

Plus one on the safety glasses, I broke a bit and it took a chunk out of my face I was pretty happy it missed my eye. I now keep a stack of safety glasses on the shelf over the work bench. I even wear sun glasses or safety glasses when I mow these days. Started after the lasik and have not stoped.

I've always been a safety glasses freak...but it got worse after lasik too...

After many years of wearing glasses, it felt like I was walking around nekkid for awhile. The first time I went for a walk without glasses it felt like a fan blowing on my eyeballs....

So ditto on the eye protection thing. I've seen several eyeballs punctured by errant welding wire...it would be real easy to do the same with safety wire....

Btw, you can also cut down on the safety risk by cutting the wire square instead of on a diagonal. Unless you "need" a sharpened end, cut them square....same goes for zip ties...

Another plus for the safety glasses. I was actually going to post them as my favorite tool in the garage. Couldn't decide between those and my David Clark flightline earmuffs. My garage safety gear gets more use than any ohter tool in the garage.

I have several sets in my garage and an extra tinted set for mowing the lawn. Have thought about getting an amber set so I can analyze the lawn with more clarity after mowing to make sure all is well. :nerd:

Or you could just use a proper zip tie tool and then there is no edge at all.

Everyone can think I'm nuts, but I always enjoyed safety wiring! It was a time to sit down and relax at the bench. I like the smaller tasks that make a huge difference. Actually got to the point I would put the bike up on the lift and drill them out right on the machine. I know it's not suggested to do so, but I did (forget to do it before I did fluids).

I opt for the safety glasses as well. I have worn corrective lenses my entire life, and actually dished out the $$ to get a pair of prescription safety glasses that I wear doing any work in the garage or the yard. Thought my glasses were enough until I caught an "assault rock" under the lense of my glasses while mowing and basically sealed my eye shut for a few days. Now it's always safety first!

safety goggles are necessary. That is all.

My friend lost an eye as a kid playing pick-up sticks (of all games). Mowing the lawn w/ shirt off and sunglasses on!

Don't think you're nuts at all. I actually like doing the dishes because it gives me a time to think and reflect back on things.... I hate flushing coolant for some reason though.

I've also really gotten into ear protection too.

Cutting the grass, weed whacking, die grinding, impact wrenching...whatever. The safety glasses are on the same peg as the muffs in the garage.

Wish I would've been this way as a kid...I've fired tens of thousands of rounds of .22lr and used lots of air tools without a thought to it, and I'm already paying the price.

Flushing coolant is just an aweful job, bar none! I like the small things that allow you to think about everything else. I guess it's the things that become second nature. I had friends bringing their bikes over for me to wire up because they didn't have the patience to do it!

I've always worn ear protection with the .22 but haven't been good about wearing them with the other things you mention. I've been trying to be better.

I'll take safety wire over fuilds any day. I spill any thing liquid, and coolant always seems to find a way to splash my face for some reason. I judge the sucess of my oil changes by the amount of rags it take to clean them up.

A few months ago I took about 11 gallons of used oil to the fuel place down the street (they have a collection tank). With 5 bikes and a quad in the garage some thing always needs a oil change. I keep my used oil old plastic gas cans labeled as used oil, much cleaner and easier to keep and dump that way.

Now I just need to find a place that takes old coolant with out charging.

wanna do my bike? you don't have to go nuts, just the basics. the bolts for the lap timer holder and one, maybe 2 of the bolts for the rear suspension linkage are already drilled.

I kind of enjoy safety wiring, too. Oil changes, coolant flushing, brake and clutch bleeding, pretty much all of the basic wrenching is kind of fun and relaxing for me.
