    Recommend me an NAS HDD...

My experiment with the HP consumer version (Media Server 2020) has been less than happy. Bad HD, then a bad chassis, now the cooling fan is shot...

Would like to replace it and looking for recommendations. Need 1TB capacity and reasonable performance....

Re: Recommend me an NAS HDD...

I had one of these for a short time and I liked it, but the nas is a love/hate thing for me cause it's just not as hot as direct connections.

My Book World Edition II 1 TB Hard Drives ( WDG2NC10000 )

edit: I lie, it wasnt a World II...I am trying to find out what I had, think it was the World (1?). I don't think what I had had the GigE connection or RAID...but seeing this has me interested again, as those were two features I was bugging out about it not having for the price I paid.

Just opened it up to find that it is the system disk and not the fan making noise....

Product quality and support have been excellant the times I have dealt with them. I have gotten stuff about 5 times over a 20 year span. Far from scientific but the results were always excellant.

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government.

I'm enjoying reading this thread. I still don't even have a single clue what is even being talked about. I finally figured out it was computer related when Bake talked about system disk and fan.

I was actually looking the day you posted this thread. I'll wait and see what shakes out

I'm looking for something with RAID redundancy that I can mirror all my pictures and music to. I can continue using a portable ext HDD like I am now, but I'd like something with built in redundency and it would be nice to have it on the network so i can access it from the laptop etc.

we're finding iSCSI to be a good NAS protocol. Bonding GBE interfaces on a dedicated LAN is quite snappy.

    Openfiler
Openfiler is a good VM appliance that supports iSCSI

    Newegg.com - Rosewill R2-RAID Dual 3.5" SATA 3G HDD 2-Bay RAID 0/1/BIG/JBOD/SAFE33/SAFE55 System/ USB2.0 & eSATA Output Design - Server RAID Systems

This is pretty much what I've been looking for(minus the network connectivity ). The heat issue is something to be concerned about but that's probably pretty easily rectifiable.

I just recently picked up one of these QNAP Systems, Inc. ( TS-219P Turbo NAS ) - Quality Network Appliance Provider to host my data. Very impressed with it so far.

So could I get something like this to put all of my music on and then access it from my laptop via my wireless network? I have 250ish Gigs of music and only a 60Gig hard drive in my laptop. I keep the music on an external HD and just pick and choose every few months.

I bought one of these and a spare 500gb drive last year:
    Newegg.com - Netgear ReadyNAS Duo 500GB (1 x 500GB) Network Storage (NAS) w/ Gigabit & speeds up to 25MBps - Network Storage (NAS)

I am about to upgrade to 1.5tb later this month.
So far I have been happy with it aside from the fact it's AFP&Bonjour (Apple things) seems to be somewhat sproadic in functionality. Of course, I only have one Mac in the house so not really sure if it's the Mac or the NAS...so I never really blamed either.

Anyways, it's fast and works well, I am pleased overall. Have it plugged into my UPS and works very well with it's own managed uptime/downtime schedule. Despite it's odd functionality listed above, it does work with Time Machine just fine

    Yes, and then some.
NAS is just network attached storage, typically 1 drive and a network interface. The units Z and I posted are actually NAS RAID arrays offering 2 drives to store the data on for redundancy.

That's the one I was going to get but realized that I needed iSCSI for what I want to use it for and had to go with something different.

Yeah iSCSI is only on the NVX and middle-tier models of the netgear units for some reason, although I am pretty sure it's useable on the RND with some work inside the shell, but I'd rather buy something turnkey as well...
