Who is into Paintball?

Okay guys and gals... I'm off to battle on the paintball field next weekend and need to know how scared I should be!

Any tips on getting some good shots off and/or laying low would be greatly appreciated!

Avoid getting hit by paintballs.
Get your trigger finger ready.

You probably thought I had some balls jokes huh?

I've never played myself, but people tell me you are supposed to use both the index and middle finger to hit the trigger alternatively so you can shoot faster.

Re: Who is into Paintball?

You might want to get geared up in what you intend to wear and have someone shoot you first so you know what you are getting yourself in to...

It's a very addicting sport and alot of fun. But if you get caught off guard it can leave some good bruises...

I have been contemplating buying some new gear and getting back in to the sport. It's a great way to keep in shape over the winter. But it costs even more than my motorcycle habit does during the summer.

Enjoy.

Re: Who is into Paintball?

Are you playing indoors or outdoors? If outdoors buy/bring the extra canisters because you will use a lot of paint. Also dont be afraid to act like Rambo (dive , roll, run, slide)...the alternative is to get hit by a paintball...and if you are not properly dressed...it will hurt. Wear loose fitting clothing...a hat, long sleeves...a also something to cover your neck if you really want to be cautious.

Re: Who is into Paintball?

I LOVE outdoor paintball on a large course. I don't care for it at all indoors. It is a completely different game all about splattering as many balls as you can with a lot less strategy and accuracy. Outdoors it can be just like special ops sniper missions. We used to play on a friends 300 acre ranch that had ponds, trees, brush. I've been up to my neck in water with the gun above my head to hide. One time we played overnight for almost 18 hours straight and went through 21,000 paintballs. I worked for a crop dusting company so we had lots of white Tyvek suits laying around. I would always take one out and spray paint it to match all the weeds and brush that were growing at that time of the year. I had a head dress thing made out of some of my moms old cloth that when I put it all together worked as an awesome snipers Ghilles suit. I could be right on top of people and they didn't know I was there.

I would also second the neck protection. One of my friends played for the first time last week and took a couple shots to the neck. It broke the skin in both places.

Re: Who is into Paintball?

If your playing on a speed ball field (not in the woods) you should only be getting shot in the mask gun or hands cause that all that you should be showing them.

The lower you are the better people always shoot high.

If your balls are curving after they leave the barrel you need to clean the barrel it has a broken ball and paint in it. (or your using cheap paint balls)

If your using a rental gun they are good for about 3 quick shots then give it a 1/2 second and go for 3 more. Trust me this will keep you from chopping a ball in half.

Getting shot can be anywhere from a real hard towel snap to not even sure you were hit. Oh and your not out unless it breaks. Most of the time a gun hit is the same as a body hit, your out.

If you have soft knee pads like they wear in volleyball they would be great to wear as you spend some time getting low.

Oh and don't shoot at the bunker or tree its already dead shoot where you think they will poke there head out.

Strange as it sound you can dodge a paint ball don't be afraid to duck them if you see them coming. Even when you are hidding keep your head up and your eyes in the game. You need to know where the people are that are shooting at you or you can't shoot back.

I used to play a lot and I have coached some winning young guns (15 and under) teams that were sponsored by the field my friend owned.

Re: Who is into Paintball?

Paintball is a blast!!! I played and coached seriously for a few years, though it has been a couple years ago now. All the above advice is good.

You really do want to cover all the skin you can, and wear extra gear in the more sensitve areas. If they have chest protectors available, wear one. Remember the rules they give you, particularily the "hold your gun up if you get shot" one. This SHOULD keep you from getting hit anymore.

No matter what kind of field you are on, try to keep as much of your body and equipment behind cover. It is amazing how hard this is, and one of the biggest mistakes noob's make. Don't be afraid to let the reff's and field workers know you are new, and ask any ?'s you have. Ask them to set you up with a good gun, they may have some "special" ones.

Oh, and never, NEVER EVER, lift or take off your face mask while on the field for ANY circumstance. Hold your gun up and wave and yell for a reff if you have trouble.

And one more important thing: shoot 'em up out there!

Re: Who is into Paintball?

Don't listen to any of these knuckleheads. Just wear two sweatshirts to keep the bruises to a minimum and the gear they give you at the house and enjoy yourself.

You'll probably come out with a couple of light bruises (inevitable) as you can't protect everything, but you'll have fun. Stay low, crawl a lot, and shoot often.

Re: Who is into Paintball?

Honestly the best thing to do is either raid the baaaaaaaack part of you're closet to find the ugly shit from the 80's you probably still have kickin around or (for us youngins) going to like value village or whatever to buy some cheap old clothes because with all the running, diving, rolling and the such it will get ripped. Baggy sweatshirts work great as well as hockey jerseys as for pants i use to wear a nylon splash pant type deal and they worked really well...cleaned up easy too. Bring a toque/bandana/durag/welding hat something to keep your head protected. Not so much from pain but paint..paint in your hair is NOT fun to clean out (I would know..when I shaved my head i donated 16 inches of hair to Locks Of Love).

Most important things to remember..
keep the business end of the paintball marker downrange.
Dont point it at a ref (they're like cops, no sense of humour)
shooting somebody in the balls might appear to be funny at first...it's not
dont be afraid to get shot, it's not that bad.
also, dont be afraid TO shoot people
most importantly HAVE FUN

Re: Who is into Paintball?

Practical tips:
1. wear knee pads from volleyball or rollerblading gear, you'll thank me later.
2. Wear gloves, leather gloves are good. Getting shot in the hand hurts!
3. Wear an old throwaway baseball cap backwards. Keeps the paint out of your hair, and protects the back of the neck.
4. Try to mercy someone at least once in your life, it's a great thing!

Re: Who is into Paintball?

You guys rock!

Now I'm more excited than nervous! Well...still a little nervous but...
All in the name of fun.

We'll be playing at a large outdoor facility that claims to have established itself as "one of the top rated fields in the nation". They have 8 playing fields including an Urban Town, Empire Castle, HALO Village and a Sup Air Field that looks like the video above! This is for a company outing (how cool is my department?!?) so most of us will be renting gear.

The site says rentals include a Tippman 98 or BT semi-automatic marker (Any suggestions on which to pick?), a full 9 oz CO2 tank, a safety mask that covers the eyes, ears, mouth, and temple, and 100 paintballs. Thanks for the tips. I do tend to bruise easily so I think I'll try to find some knee and elbow pads this week. I'll also dig out the ratty old clothes and layer them for extra padding and so a lot of skin is covered. A hat too...I never even thought about trying to get paint out of my hair after the fact!

Now if NH would only work with me instead of against! Hun...I want to play for a while. As tempting as it may be....don't shoot me right out of the gate kay?!?

Sounds like an awesome facility! Where is it?

As far as marker selection, I have no experiance with the BT. It looks like a similar gun to the Tipman, which is an old standby. I would probably get the TP98. Try to get a barrel swab, too. If a paintball breaks in the barrel you lose any accuracy you might have. You won't have much time to run a swab down the barrel on a speed ball course, but it sure is nice to be able to clean paint out if you are in a longer scenario game. Rather than watch paintballs spinning off target.

100 paintballs will not last long. Expect to buy more... They may have pods and belt harnesses available to carry more with you to reload on the field if you are running empty (a "later on" thing). Also, paintballs sometimes (often) jam up in a non-motorized hopper. If you are shooting and not seeing anything come out, shake the gun a little and they should feed again.

Oh, and about that NH guy...remember YOU have a gun too!
