Its official, music died years ago.
I ran across this tonight. Man, all it does is show me how the music today sucks. I think I'm going to dig my cd's and rock out to Black Sabbath, Doors, Led Zepplin, Hendrix, Clapton, SRV, Who, Thin Lizzy, AC/DC, Motorhead, etc for the rest of the week.

Great tune, nice find.
There are "some" decent tunes out there from todays artists, but, you're right there was just such a selection of great groups to choose from then
See you at GRATTAN

There's good music today...but it's not as pop as the bands you listed were...

I agree there are a lot of talented groups and individuals out there now.
To me it is somewhat of the pioneering factor of earlier rock that makes it so great.
Also, I was kicking the musical preference thing around with some friends awhile ago. We came up with the theory that the music you identify with most and enjoy for all your life, is the music that you were exposed to when "certain" things were happening in your life.

Re: Its official, music died years ago.

You know, I've met plenty of people that have the same issue with their favorite decade of music...
This is why I decided to not limit myself to not trying new music. I've had some grin and bear it years, but I'm not "stuck" in the 80's, though I do have my preferences.
LTL, have you noticed new music kinda goes through cycles, like 50's influences, then 60's influences, 70's influences, and so on?
I think 2006 had a definite pop "new wave" feel to it, and a lot of bands out now are reflecting "New Romantic" influences - like Angels and Airwaves.

Yeah.........so?
Re: Its official, music died years ago.
The only new band I've gotten into is The Killers. They're kinda like throwing U2, Duran Duran, and Meatloaf along with a truly bizarre vocal style into a blender.

I agree, they are incredable, as is Queensrÿche. But I don't see them setting the world on fire, or making as big a mark on the music world as say Sabbath or Led Zep did. I guess my point in starting this thread was who is the Led Zep, Rolling Stones, Sabbath, AC/DC, etc of today? Who will be remembered by the masses in 30 years? Or where the originators simply amazing because they were the first to do it? I mean, I worhip Hendrix, but clearly anything he did, many people can do better now. Whats amazing, is he somehow invented it, pretty much by taking what existed then, and morphing it into something new. Thats the skill, tallent, and inovation that rocks. Who is doing that now days?

I think music has become so diverse that its hard for much thats really new and innovative to come around. We won't see another person/band that breaks boundries like Hendrix or Sabbath. There really aren't and boundries left to be broken. in the last 20-25 years the only one I can think of that did anything new was Chuck Schuldiner's band Death. before him there was no such thing as death metal. will people remember that band in 20 years? probably only hard core fans of the genre. stuff goes through more of an evolution now rather than anyone making huge jumps into new styles.
in my opinion I still think we need to bring the guitar solo back to rock music.

Re: Its official, music died years ago.
I agree about the evolutin thing, perhaps all the big leaps have already been made and no one is ever going to have the impact of being the first ever again. Is for death metal, Maybe I see it different, but I see it as another evolution of metal, coming from hardcore and thrash, a path that just took a darker turn. While I missed the very early stuff, I was heavy into the LA club scene all through the '90's. I saw canibal corpse, sepultura, morbid angel, slayer, metal church, napalm death, obituary, exodus, anthrax, and a lot more I cant remember. Everything from hardcore, deathcore, grindcore, thrash, etc. It all seemed to be bands on a similar path, just at different places at the time. There seemed to be a progression about it. Play faster than Judist Priest and you had Anthrax. Play Anthrax a little harder and you had Slayer. Play Slayer a darker and you had the deathcore bands. Put some better technical players and play Slayer and you had Atheist or Death. Overall, I dont know if any of them left a big enough mark to be called visionary. Perhaps, history will prove me wrong.

Re: Its official, music died years ago.
My dad used to be all into the Sabbath and stuff when he was younger and still is. Now though he's starting to rock out to stuff liek Avenged Sevenfold (scary as it is to picture a 45 year old rocking out...shit happens). The link is one of his favourite songs that he likes cuz it has "an oldschool feel to it when musicians were talented". Wait for the killer guitar solo about halfway through the song.

I would be much happier if the Killers got into the same blender as long as it was running.
Though that said, the new Papa Roach is awesome and for some reason I keep listening to the Blue October album. Neither of these belong in a Sabbath thread, but meh, it's good to cross pollinate

Done.
Re: Its official, music died years ago.
Just go look through the rap CD section at your local WalMart.
That's where all the talent is, yo.
Oh, and that guitar solo on Seize The Day is a complete copy of Slash. The song itself sounds like GnR, which is why I like it, but the solo is a Slash copy.
Take a listen to any of his solos and it will put that one to shame.
But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government.

I am pretty ignorant about Death metal, but I think you are right about the rest of the post, especially the guitar solo!

45 year old is scary rocking out, huh?
That's it, punk! You are now going to be locked in a room and have to listen to me wail through my entire repertoire of partial classic rock songs!
We'll see how you like "Ironman" ala leelover!
Just gotta dig out the Marshall that goes to "11", and where is my Les Paul? Maybe over behind my walker...or the jazzy scooter...
You are really gonna be sorry you whippersnapper!

This is what I meant. Metal used to be more mainstream.
The world is being set on fire by non-metal bands right now. Ironically, the biggest concert tour seller last year was the Stones.
Metallica is currently doing an album with Rick Rubin. I will pre-order this one on vinyl and CD. I know you haven't liked the "new" Metallica (I can't remember if you liked the Black album, but most use that as the separater) but many of the stadium sellout groups are not metal right now. As Scout mentioned, music goes in cycles. The last metal cycle was in the 90's with Metallica, GnR, etc etc. There are metal groups people like, like Trivium, and they're good, but I can't get into it. It sounds like stuff "I've already done".
Right now we have rap-ish shit, but we also have kinda pop-rock bands like Green Day, White Stripes, the Killers, etc etc.
John Mayer and Jack Johnson type stuff has been popular. I think their stuff is merely OK, but there is some quality in it. I abhor the group's music, but Coldplay seems to be setting the world on fire.
Give it time, people will tired of whiny-ass Coldplay, the punk-ish stuff will get a bit less mainstream, and some new metal will emerge...
