    The official cell phone thread

I start one of these every so often. Please forgive me. This one should be more serious b/c my contract w/ Verizon is up soon and my "New Every Two" will allow me to get a nicer phone for something reasonable.

I'm leaning toward a MotoQ, but haven't rule out the LG Chocolate or just a RAZR.

I have the sanyo equivalent to the razr called the katana and I like it. Haven't had any problems with it. Battery life is great, comes in a few more colours, interface is bone simple to use and it has a good camera on it. Great phone IMHO

Re: The official cell phone thread

I've heard rumors that the Chocolate has ribbon wires in it that tend to break over time. I've had two friends buy that phone...one took it back after like 3 days because it sucked. The other still has it and seems to like it.

I'm on my second RAZR and IMO it's still the best phone I've had to date. It's just that though...a phone.

    Sucked in what way?

Yea the RAZR is hard to beat. I mean there's a reason why so many people have them. Same reason I bought the iPod and not another brand. When something is right, it's just right.

Depending on the service package I'll prolly go w/ the Q and get the wife a RAZR.

Wait to talk to Kawboy69 about the choclate, he has had some issues with it.

I have the razor and it is ok but it has a few pet peeves, toothin for my hand size and the fingerprints are horrible on the screen.

I just got a Verizon KRZR and I love it...only thing I do not love is the Verizon 'OS' they layover it . But phonewise (and Im not a big flip fan) it is one of the best phones I have had yet. My SLVR being a close second in terms of 'its just a freaking phone that does whatever I want, really well'. To those of our home viewers that don't know, I used to be a big Nokia fan and swore by them...but not so much anymore. I swear the Moto. units are more robust as far as not getting logjammed by quick inputs and at actually KEEPING a call. I thought Cingular put in booster antennae when I got my SLVR it was that much of a difference. Very odd though...considering the same (cell) company sells both side by side and the better one was acutally cheaper .

editors note: the GSM Slvr and GSM Razr are the same UI, just different form factor...so this is also in agreement with ND4's post.

The Q rocks as well, but I have Cingular for work now so I get to wait for the Q GSM to come out in a few _____.

Is it that it is too thin or has a weird weight distribution coupled with the thin lower portion of the package?

The fingerprints issue is solved by one of the Motorola screen cleans...I have one on my laptop bag and it does an eerily good job of cleaning the KRZR up fast.

What's the diff between the KRZR and RAZR?

Sorry to be lazy about this, but like I said somewhere else; I'm trying to write a paper that I've been procrastinating on.

If you want a Q type phone, you could look into the Samsung Blackjack.

I've definitely been digging mine, though I'm still not using near the features on it.

Re: The official cell phone thread

What are you looking for in a phone?

If you want email, text, and a casual-user based PDA/smartphone the Q is fine. The data packages are pricey though ($25 or $45 month on top of your voice $$$).

The RAZR is a great phone. Haven't had any problems with mine at all and at $50 you can't beat it.

The Chocolate is crap. Stay away from it. The only reason you'd want one is if you need an ipod and only need to make the occasional phone call...and it'll end up costing more than an ipod. I saw more of those phones get returned by unhappy customers than any other.

The KRZR is Motorola's answer to the Chocolate and will ultimately replace the RAZR, methinks. Very cool phone.

Check out the LG enV if you're looking for a multimedia type of device.

Well obviously first and foremost it must be a good phone. No check that, it has to be a great phone. I have a hard time talking to people b/c it's like both parties end up talking over top of each other for some reason. So the sound and "responsiveness" much be top notch.

I'd like a camera this time. I think. I'll know when I have it I guess.

I'd like to surf the net once in a while. Like look for directions to places and search for a place to eat, etc. etc. Surf MC sites while on the can, that sort of thing.

I guess I want a PDA too. Not that I have a ton of meetings, but I'm job shopping so who knows what will happen in the near term.

    I guess I'm looking at a Q.

You don't if you are staying with Verizon, but they are only a USDM carrier. International = GSM, but Cing/T-mobile are your only choices there.

I'm prolly sticking w/ Verizon. I'm mostly happy w/ the coverage altough I may go get a Sprint and try it out. There *are* holes in my VZ coverage, and I have a buddy who works for Sprint. Aparently he's seen the metrics from the phone switches and stuff and he says that Sprint has the best operational metrics of any of the carriers. He's not biased, b/c he also says how aweful their management and market are.

As far as I know their merger did nothing to improve their coverage. Sprint and Nextel operated(and still do) on different networks. Unlike AT&T & Cingular who were both GSM.

My dad just canceled his Sprint contract because it was just as worthless as it was a few days after he signed contract two years ago. Your buddy having access to Sprint's metrics means exactly nothing unless he has the same data from other carriers. Even then, it's hard to beat real world experience.

And actually it does mean exactly something. Whether it will help me in the pocket of places that I (or your dad) frequent in relation to the entire planet is another story. But in relation to the other carriers, it means a lot.

He's seen apples to apples comparisons across the carriers for size of network and dropped calls. Not sure what else. That to me is worth a 30 day trial.
