Advice needed on buying a new vehicle
so I've been going to some dealers looking to buy a Tacoma. Of course I know they all try to dick you around and shit. Well none of them will get down to what I want to pay, which they claim is below their cost. I don't believe what they tell me is their cost anyway. The other day I went to one of the biggest ones in the country and he said he couldn't do it so I said thanks and asked for my credit card back (I would have put a deposit down on it). As the guy behind the counter is getting my card he starts spouting all this crap about I'm not gonna find it cheaper anywhere else and I won't get that low of an interest rate. I didn't hear anymore cause I walked away while he was talking because the sales manager had already gone over all that.
I talked to a friend who is a Hyundai salesman and his main advice is, don't let them scam you into talking payments. so anyone have anymore advice? I seem to be doing pretty good, the dealers I have been to have called me back saying they have a "good price" for me. I have to call them back after the holiday and find out what that good price is though. but it seems they are giving in a lot more than I do.

Yes, don't let them talk payments instead of price.
Do your homework on the site HD linked, come up with what you want to pay (I would do it out the door), and present it to them.
Don't hang around and let them dick you around if they don't agree with your price. That's what these guys do best. Make your offer, tell em take it or leave it, and move on. I would do that with as many dealers as possible. my

Re: Advice needed on buying a new vehicle
Don't buy new. Buy Certified Pre-Owned. They're typically lease returns with the same(if not better than) the new car warranty. The up side is you don't lose $10k on the car in 2 years, someone else already took the hit.

Re: Advice needed on buying a new vehicle
good stuff so far. ND the dealers around here are charging just about as much for a used one as a new one. And the problem I'm having with used is I can't find a single 05+ Tacoma that's a 2wd 4 cylinder. every used one is 4x4 V6 and they are asking over $20k. it doesn't really make sense to me why so many people are trading in the 4x4s right now with the snow coming which is really the only time most people would use it around here.

If they are claiming they are loosing money tell them Bullshit. They are not in the buisness to loose $$.
Ask to see their invoice.
My recent truck I bought had a $30k sticker on it and got it down to $24,780

Re: Advice needed on buying a new vehicle
KBB has invoice prices I think. If the dealer buys a lot of a particular vehicle they might even get it below invoice price. You gotta go at the right time of day and month. End of the month close to closing time...they'll be more likely to work with ya.

Re: Advice needed on buying a new vehicle
Are you able to buy from a private party? Financing, etc.

Re: Advice needed on buying a new vehicle
Do internet shopping. They will start to email you prices on the car. Go to Edmunds.com and look up invoice price. If you have a credit union they could do all the work for you. I ended up getting a my deal on a g35 by using the internet salesmen. One dealership came in pretty close to invoice while others kept dropping 1k every month.
I financed it all through my CU for a lower rate than what the dealer could do.
Toyotas are a premium with more demand. Now the ford and chevy dealers.. they are really willing to deal.

I don't see why not, I should be able to get a loan from the bank no problem. problem is no one is selling the one I want.
damn Hammer thats a lot off. the prick dealer that I walked away from buys a shitload of vehicles. I think they had 30 new Tacomas on the lot and their commercials claim they have the lowest prices because they have the lowest costs (no mortgages). I know the owner has a shitload of money, he buys a new jet every few years, I've seen his house on Martha's Vineyard and I'd say it has to be worth $5mil. I would say he owns half of the automile. so even if they do lose a little money on my sale he can afford it, they rip off enough gullible people.

+1 on what the others said but...
It will be hard to find any 2wd p/u's in your area because they dont sell as quickly. Its just like trying to find a 4wd in Florida, the demand just isnt there. They hardly ship any to your region new.
IF you're willing to travel for a 2wd, you'd be better off searching below NJ to find decent variety.
There are alot of 2wd pickups in this area, but I'm not sure if they will meet your needs (assuming you want to transport your bike to trackdays and the like)
You're not gonna find Tacoma's for cheap unless you buy private and get lucky... they hold their value and all the dealers know it. For the difference in price I would just get a V6 in stick.
Whatever you do DO NOT GET any american made 4 cylinders!!

One other thing.... when I bought my Odyssey I got a approved by capital one for the amount I was willing to spend and the payments I wanted... then I walked into the dealership with a check...which was essentially "cash in hand."
Made it easier to deal with scumbag sales tactics.
You can also buy private (just at a higher % rate)

Re: Advice needed on buying a new vehicle
yeah JE my location and choice of a 2wd is making things hard but of course I'm in absolutely no rush. I want the 4 banger to save a little on gas (grattan is a long ways away). The 4 cylinder has plenty of power to throw the bike in back and drive wherever. And I want an automatic because it makes the parking situation easier at home, I get home after everyone else comes home/before they leave. And since they can't seem to park in the correct spots and 2 of the other 4 with cars can't drive a standard, and I am not getting up at 7am to move the truck when I went to bed at 4 or 5. Also I shift all day at work why would I wanna do it more.

Like Hammer says, they are not losing money. An auto dealers job is to get all they can.
Have you looked on Auto trader and ebay?
I have bought 4 vehicles that I found on ebay, WAY below what I could have paid at a local dealer. Be happy to give you the details if you want.
I got my financing in place before hand and made the deals.
I got some really good terms through State Farm Ins financing division.

Re: Advice needed on buying a new vehicle
The Edmunds TMV price is usually a good one to aim for. It is typically a fair price that both parties can come away happy with.
The real place to watch out is the "Business Office".
Going in being all demanding and stuff won't get you anywhere, but knowing a sales price you're willing to settle at is a good thing.
The salesman will always come back from the manager's office with payments. That's their job. At that point, just let thm know that isn't what you are willing to do, take his pen and physically cross it out.
Then write down a dollar figure that is a couple grand below what you will settle at and sign your name next to it.
This isn't a contract, you can't be held to anything, but it lets the sales manager know you're serious and where you're at.
Only dicker a couple times back and forth, then just get up and leave. Don't be all mouthy about it, just tell them they aren't going to earn your business at that point and leave.
And don't ever actually hand any of your belongings over to them. If they ask for car keys on a trade-in, bring a spare key to let them look at the car with. If they want your credit card, just tell them no. Show them you have it with you, or have your checkbook with you, but don't actually give it to them.
My last car deal went down very smoothly. Took less than 15 minutes for them to agree to the price, then it was all the crappy paperwork and waiting for them to "prep" the car. Just don't listen to anything the "Business Manager" says to you. Look over the sales contract very closely, but don't buy anything he is selling and act completely and totally disinterested in him, his stories, the store, the cars, everything. Act bored, not excited to get your car.
No need to be all pushy and prickish to get a deal that is fair. You just need to know how to stand firm and know what you want. Showing confidence but not cockiness is a big key.

GM and Toyota are in 2 different worlds. They have huge manufacturer incentives and holdbacks to work with on a domestic, in addition to the high margin.
A 4-Cylinder Tacoma 2WD.... how much of a discount are you asking for? There's less than 2 grand on that truck between dealer net and MSRP.
+1 on not negotiating a payment. Negotiate an all-inclusive price first.

Re: Advice needed on buying a new vehicle
+1 to BDA. A good business manager will net another $1500+ out of you, but of course it's all represented as "only $15 more per month".
Don't argue with her either. They sell this stuff every day.... you don't buy it every day. They have well-rehearsed impenetrable responses to all of your objections. If you don't want what they're offering, just tell them you're not interested... don't tell them "why".

Re: Advice needed on buying a new vehicle
If you can still get a new '06 Tacoma, there should be at least another $1000 in "trading dollars" which are hidden dealer incentives that they can choose not to show you.
Price out exactly what you want on the Toyota web site before you negotiate.

Re: Advice needed on buying a new vehicle
Try this:
Spec out the EXACT truck you want including all the options. (this way they can't reply with more questions) Send an email to 5 dealers in your area. Make sure all of their addresses are visible in the address bar. The addresses should just be sales@whateverdealership.com
Greetings
I am purchasing a new 2006 or 2007 Tacoma 2WD, 4-cylinder automatic with air conditioning and power windows. (model code TX22NP BA) My top 3 colour choices are "xxx". Please respond with your best all-inclusive price.
I will bring a bank draft in the amount quoted to the store with the winning bid by XXX date.
Thank you for your time
Peck

Re: Advice needed on buying a new vehicle
Yeh there is something called a "dealer holdback" that I have heard about. Its built into the invoice. So if they show you and sell to you at invoice.... they are still making 1k off the car. You could aim for below invoice ... it does happen sometimes.
As practice I do check NHTSA on that particular car or truck for those model years that are alike before I buy.

1) join it (usually a good idea anyway)
2) check what they give on financing

Re: Advice needed on buying a new vehicle
The last 2 vehicles I bought I got for Invoice price plus a small dealer fee. The invoice price came from Edmunds and it was fair at the time I bought these vehicles. We are planning on another purchase of a rather hot ticket car but I'm still not planning on paying more than invoice price for it. There are a lot of dealers in this area so competition is pretty tight between them. End of the month is a good time to buy, so is the end of the model year.
