You should have seen the FoxNews report on this. It was outstanding journalism.

"How your iPod can kill you"

Then, after 20 minutes of lead ins like that, the friggin dude got struck by lightning.

That's what I was watching too.

I'm thinking if your out jogging in a storm so bad it's producing lightning, you've probably got bigger issues than whether or not you're carrying an iPod.

I don't know if it's true or not, but I've read that getting struck by lighting can cause your eardrums to blow out (among some other worse things) with or without headphones stuck in your ears.

On a backpacking trip a group a day ahead of us had a kid struck by lightning. It arced from his pack frame to his ear and blew it off, and blew the soles of his boots off. But believe it or not the main injury occured when he fell face first into shale rocks after being hit.

I wouldn't doubt it. A lineman in my parents' community was in a cherrypicker working on a transformer when he leaned down to pick up a tool. The transformer was supposed to be off but wasn't; when he leaned down his head touched it. He lived and you wouldn't know anything was wrong today except for his hooks. It essentially blew both his hands off.

Wearing wires on your head in a lightning storm is a bad idea... wow who would have thought it



On a related side note did you hear the part about how far a strike can occur from the storm? This is one that amazes me. Most people think if they cannot see strikes within 1-2 miles they are safe. I was a facility one time that had a 25 mile strike detector and a storm was coming. Strike one on the detector took out a mainframe, and we were 25+ miles from 'the storm'. If you can hear thunder you can get struck.

I can't today. I'm trying to move, plus I'm pretending to clean so I don't get yelled at anymore. I'm sitting on a cardboard box at my kitchen counter right now "wiping down the counter".

I can't stay away even though I've got a ton of things to do to turn this house and the storage area back over tomorrow morning.
