Off to the doctor
Well, I went in yesterday to have some x-rays done and had an MRI on my spine last week, and today is results day. I have been getting numbness in my right hand and a couple of fingers on my left hand, as well as aches in my left side. They ruled out heart issues, so now it's on to the next option. I'm optomistic, hoping for the best. I'll be able to tell more once I get back.

Re: Off to the doctor
Some not so good results yesterday. Finishing off the 600RR and putting her up for sale as it looks now. I have to go in and have 3 vertibra fused as my discs have deteriorated beyond help. They have to remove scar tissue from when I had cortisone injections, and shave off bone spurs from some members of my spine. They are causing nerves to get pinched and severely irritated, and they said if they don't go in and fix it I could have permanent nerve damage. I will be getting a copy of the results after my consult with the surgeon, and I will be able to be a bit more exact. I have a horrible memory when it comes to naming the vertibra and exactly where everything is at. All I know is the surgery will be on the upper portion of my neck and back. I have not yet slept, so I'm going to get a few hours and pop back on.

Yeah, I got the whole "you need to take better care of yourself and make better choices" speech. Thinking it stemmed of my last crash at the track a few years ago, and I just let it go. All I could ask him is "does that put me out for one or two seasons?".
Thank you all for your concern. I will keep you informed as I get more info as well. I'm getting nervous already, I don't like anyone going that close to my spinal cord, it's something I've been trying to avoid for a few years now. Nothing else worked.

At least you are gettin r done. Plenty of people out there that would "just live with it". Life is hard enough without being in pain. You should be back in no time.
It it were me I would hold onto the bike unless there are other reasons to let it go at this time. Might even give you a little motivation.

Another good way to look at it, thanks Mojave! I'm debating, but I think I may keep it, invest the time and money in it, and run it when I'm ready. I'm selling my 76 chev truck and my Impala, so I'll have the $$ to make it through the off time, and the new job I'm starting said that I will have my position when I get back as well. They are very understanding and want to see it done. Been on the phone all morning, and all is getting worked out. I see the surgeon Tuesday, and surgery will probably be sometime mid January. Dates TBA.

Good luck with it all and of course keep us posted. Nice that the job will be there as well. That at least is one stress off your mind. One thing I did this yr was elect the long-term disability insurance at work. Hope I never have to use it but, it is there if I need it.

Really sorry to hear this. Have you met with the surgeon yet? His prognosis may not coincide with your primary doctors so you may hear a different tune.
I'm going to see the nuerosurgeon today after finding that L1 through L5 are complete toast and L3 has "pierced the sheath". Can't wait to hear his recommendations . . .

Ouch! I don't care for anything that has to do with the spine, it's way too fragile! I am hoping that the surgeon has better news. We tried cortizone shots before, but they actually made MY condition worse. I was in such pain that it was unbearable. Now that scar tissue is affecting as well. I'm hoping there are other options, that will be the surgeon's decision. I'm going to lunch with a friend of mine who is friends with my future surgeon, so I'll find out what kind of advice he has or what he knows as well. Scary to say that my friend is a surgeon and also works in cancer research, but I met him because I manage the local band that he plays guitar in! They play stuff from Black Label Society and music of the like. Amazing the hobbies the surgeons have these days!

+1 on the second opinion, Bikerboy. My mom had that surgery to clean out bone growth into the spinal column, and other than delay due to her osteoporosis, she healed well. I expect you to do better.

Re: Off to the doctor
I had an early lunch with my friend, and he said that in conversation with my surgeon, whom I will be seeing Tuesday, there was discussion of pain management and other forms of surgery, one of which I'm about to start investigating. There is a study going on about some kind of "artificial" disks that may be able to replace the natural ones in your spine. I'm going to Google a bit of research on this subject and see what I can stir up. The whole concept sounds very intriguing to me. Less of a "mechanical" set up and more like natural. If this works out, it would be a wonderful feat in the medical world as far as myself and many others are concerned. He said that discussed was the fact that I may not be able to wait that long, but they are going to check into things and see how far away the testing is from becoming a reality. It's all very interesting to me.

Re: Off to the doctor
What I've found so far is this article, but they are still working on the top half of the spine, so we'll have to see. It looks like a great alternative though.

Re: Off to the doctor
I had a whole mess of vertebrae fused, but luckily they were thoracic, which don't move much anyway. I was back to work in about 2 months. Hope it doesn't come down to surgery for you, but if it does, you'll be okay.
Best wishes!

Well the good news is that as long as I can stand the pain, they won't operate. The bad news is that one or more of several pelvic concussions (their phrase, not mine) has S shaped the entire L stack and L3 is actually into the spinal cord right where it terminates and becomes the nerve header for the lower body.
They were reasonably impressed that I walked in under my own power.
Lot of decisions to make in the next 2 weeks . . .

Bummer, but I suppose it could be worse. Good luck with your decision and make sure you're fit for Grattan!

Yeah, definitely listen to the doc if you trust him, or get a second opinion. I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir here, but I'm worried about you and hope it all works out for you.
