Re: What are you listening to?

Oh, and I highly recommend Miles Live At The Plugged Nickel set. You may not want to spring for the boxset at first, but there is a single "highlights" disc availble.

And if you loved(my very first Jazz disc, and still my favorite)then you definitely need Time Out. and to round out the affair pick up The Blues And The Abstract Truth from Oliver Nelson. With those three albums, you'll have three of the best Jazz albums ever recorded. And you won't find many Jazz fans that would argue against that.

Abtech?
No argument here. Although my number one greatest Jazz album of all time is 74 Miles Away by Cannonball. I love the time signature even better than 5/4.

Re: What are you listening to?

I'm just not into spending that kind of money on stereo equipment anymore. Trust me, I KNOW how much better analog is than digital.

But the $300 I spent on my new pair of headphones last year is about all you'll get out of me anymore.

The step up in qualit is simply too small anymore. And if the step up was huge, you either had an obscenely cheap system, or there was something wrong with it.

Re: What are you listening to?

Had a buddy of mine in Florida that had a system that was somewhere in the neighborhood of $40k. Tube amp, the whole nine yards. Paid around $5k for the turntable alone.

Did it sound sweeter than hell? Yep. But it better have for that kind of money.

The last thing I intend to add to my system is a solid headphone amp. Then I'm done.

Hell, I still haven't paid $40k for a fucking car!!

Re: What are you listening to?

Yeah, it's not hard to get up there.

I've heard systems over $150k, and I have to say, if I won the lottery, I'd definitely do it.

But you can get pretty close for around $10-15k.

Re: What are you listening to?

5 years ago I would have ben right onboard with you, LTL.

But for some reason, it just isn't as important to me anymore. I'll take my "decent" Circuit City rig anyday and be quite happy with it. My 15" Velodyne is right on par with some subs I've heard for 3 and 4 times the money.

And for the most part I listen to almost all of my music through my Sennheisers these days. That was probably the last thing that blew me away in sound, the open back headphone. Creates quite a beuatiful and airy soundstage.

Re: What are you listening to?

In that same mag, the dude was talking about how the reason hifi is dying is the stuff in Best Buy and Circuit City is just too good for the money. (I think that is part of it, but another part is many high end shops suck at servicing customers)

I wonder if part of it is the limit of the CD format?

Either way, you can do really well out of a box store for minimal cash.

I have found things start getting much more sensitive when you go vinyl.

Well, I'm not so sure about that. Not that my rig is bad, but I mean c'mon.

I think the reason it's dying is generational. When I was a kid, all there were were LP's and 8-tracks. At the consumer level anyway. And everything was recorded in analog. But as you go through the years with the "greater" technology you're going to have less and less people exposed to hi-end sound. And that's where the slow death is taking place.

MP3 players? Kids growing up on those today won't give two shits about cd's and won't have the slightest idea what an LP even is. I prefer the warmer, rounder sound of an LP. When compared A->B with a cd it become perfectly clear what the limitations are in the digital domain.

But you know, try carrying around 1,000 of your favorite LP's in your pocket. That's the kind of concern the future will bring for music lovers. Sound quality won't matter as much because, as I said, they were never really exposed to audiophile quality sound to begin with.

Re: What are you listening to?

See, I just don't agree.

I'm not too far behind you age-wise, but I grew up CD. I got my first VH 5150 copy, on CD. Dad was an early adopter always back then. Yes I played some of Dad's records, but everything I ever bought, outside a few cassettes was CD.

And I personally don't even see iPod, and High Fidelity stuff (Vinyl or other) as competing formats.

I love my iPod, it goes to the gym with me, and it rides planes with me. I love it for this.

But when I want to sit down and listen to music, the iPod, or any other format, won't compete with good gear.

Oh really?

What we're basically talking about here is audio playback, aren't we? So which is the overwhelmingly dominant format these days? And I hate to say it because MP3's have such a shitty sound quality, but this technology isn't just some fad. And besides, I'm not talking about folks our age. I'm talking about the newbs to audio right now.

High end audio will never go away completely. But it will never enjoy any more success than it is having now, and it's prescence will continue to decline generation after generation.

I'm not sure how you can't agree with that.

Re: What are you listening to?

Because the same type of people who would want to buy hi-fi now, will want to buy it in the future. People are doing outboard amps for their iPods, all kinds of better headphones...these people will keep looking for better and better.

Witness the changes in computer speakers, Apple even released the Hi-fi.

As people want better and better, eventually their wallets will catch up with their desires and they'll find themselves in a hi-fi store in their late 20's to early 30's.

If more people are listening to music because of the convenient formats, that means there will be even more people looking for hi-fi in the future.

They might be more insistent on integrating digital playback with lossless format media, through their higher and higher end systems...but as they look around they'll find other stuff.

Re: What are you listening to?

If you want great Coltrane, I highly recommend the following:
  • Crescent
  • Giant Steps
  • Ballads
  • Coltrane's Sound
  • Soultrane
He's also brilliant, of course, on many of Miles Davis' recordings, especially including:
  • Kind of Blue (which you have)
  • Relaxin'
  • Steamin'
  • Cookin'
  • Workin'
Genius. One of my all-time faves (although I'm still not a big fan of free jazz).

This, my friend, is an outstanding list! Especially for newbs to Coltrane. You really know your stuff.

Ballads is horridly under-appreciated. And the mellow side of the Classic Quartet.

The only thing I would change is I would substitute Coltrane Jazz for Coltrane's Sound. The former being his second strongest Atlantic release behind Ole'.

Crescent is also completely underrated and forgotten in the shadow of his only other '64 release, A Love Supreme. The former actually being the better of the two, IMO.

Do you like anything else from the Classic Quartet? I would say Live At Birdland might not be a bad introduction for those not familiar with his work. That contains THE absolutely essential version of Afro Blue.

And though I wouldn't consider myself a big fan of Giant Steps, considering what LTL is currently into, that would be an album that would likely grab him.

Oh, and if you want REALLY great Coltrane, look no further than ANY of his 1965 recordings. First Meditations and Sun Ship being the standouts.

I have every major label release he ever made, so forgive me if I meander a bit..........

This is one of those "we'll have to agree to disagree" moments.

Thanks. The guy blows my mind.

I also love the classic John Coltrane/Johnny Hartman recording. Blue Train is good, but inconsistent, unfortunately, likely due to unfortunate habits he and so many others fell into.

I go in phases. I'm a rookie when it comes to jazz. But Joe Pass' My Song is a fav.

I was annoyed by much of A love Supreme just now, and by the time I got to Ballads I needed something more energetic as I'm trying to write a paper that I've been procrastinating for a while now.
