Credit Report
I was looking at getting my credit report and trying to look through all the BS sites. What is the best/safest way to get a credit report?

Re: Credit Report
I just got a letter from the Department of Veteran Affairs that a computer hard drive used by an employee of the Birmingham Veteran Affairs (VA) Medical Center is missing. Because personal information may be missing or compromised, I was given the exact info you want.
As I understand, everyone has the right to one free report each year. I'll list the agencies below. Good luck.
Equifax
PO Box 740241
Atlanta, GA 30374
1-800-685-1111
Experian
PO Box 9554
Allen,TX 75013
1-888-397-3742
TransUnion
PO Box 2000
Chester, PA 19022
1-800-916-8800
The letter also included this: For information about Identity Theft, including how to place a "fraud alert" with the credit reporting agencies, visit the Federal Trade Commission online at Federal Trade Commission - Home or call toll free 1-877-438-4338.

Re: Credit Report
Also run by the FTC: the ability to get your report FREE once a year. This is not those bullshit infomercials on TV that force you to buy "credit protection" or some other racket.
This is the no shit government mandated free reports. You get one from each of the big three. It does not, however, give you your FICO score. It's just the meat of the report to make sure it is accurate.

Re: Credit Report
Not to knock Frenchie, but that link is not "free" as it suggests. You have to enroll in Experian's Credit Protection program.
The only way to get your official report is to go thru the FTC.

Re: Credit Report
I use freecreditreport.com. It's $13/mo(not free like the URL suggests) but they monitor any activity and notify you immediately. It also gives you your score which is updated quarterly I believe.

Done.
Re: Credit Report
This is the official website for the once-yearly free report from each of the three credit bureaus under the FACT Act.
https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp
I use the free service there, but I also subscribe to the site mentioned by others for monitoring. You get a monthly overview of what's going on, get alerts when something changes, and can pull a new Experian report monthly.
EDIT: The free one provided by the government also doesn't give you a score, you have to pay extra for that.
You do get it from the Experian site.

Business owners should keep tabs on their D&B reports as well. These things can bite you in the ass big time . . .

Re: Credit Report
one of my credit cards give me a summary credit report online based from TransUnion. what I don't get is when I bought my truck in January I looked at it and my credit score was xxx. since then I have paid off what little I had on my credit cards and paid off my bike loan and haven't had any late payments on anything in as long as I can remember and my score has gone down roughly 25 points. I guess I shouldn't complain cause my score is still very high.
maybe I'll check out the full report and see what it says.

Every time someone checks it (other than you), you loose a couple of points. That's why it's not a good idea to apply for credit at more than one or two places. It takes 3 years for that "hit" to go away as well . . .

I use them too.....they do a great job of monitoring. Any activity, whether it be inquiries or other suspicious snooping - you'll know about it.

You just added what, $20K to your debt load? Of course the score is going to go down. Your DTI just ballooned, your total available credit just went down and your debt load went up.
The score isn't a black and white science. Just paying on time doesn't mean it will be all rosy. It helps, but it isn't everything.
Your overall debt availability and creditor risk picture is where the score comes from, and you just loaded up two of the larger factors. As you pay the truck loan on time the score should come back up some, but if it is also the largest loan you have ever signed for on your own it will take a while before the risk factors are mitigated.
And a "very high" credit score is over 800.

As a person who suffered a bankruptcy in 1999 due to a failed business and my inability to judge (or should I say lack common sense) in deciding who to choose as a business partner, I am am a self proclaimed credit score expert.
Here is what WILL raise your score OR lower it fast:
1. High revolving balances on credit cards. Even if you make EVERY payment on time and even pay MORE than the minimum, it will lower your credit score.
2. Lots of inquiries. If you like to "shop" around for items, DO NOT give them your social security number until you have made a decision as to who and what you are going to purchase. The more people that "check" your credit score - the LOWER it will go over time.
3. Multiple FIRST mortgages - if you own more than one piece of property, sometimes it's better to get a HELOC from your first home or even a 2nd mortgage on your first home to help pay for your new property. More than one mortgage is VERY BAD for credit.
4. Liens or judgements of course - if you let your credit slide to the brink of a B.K. - do EVERYTHING in your power to prevent it - My score went from the high 700's down to the low 500's within one month of my bankruptcy discharge. It has taken almost 8 years to recover.
I have been a perfect little soldier since my bankruptcy. I have suffered denials for $1,000 credit apps!! Now - my score is back up to where it used to be but BOY - I have learned some lessons.
I can't say this works for every single person, but have as few credit cards as possible, keep their balances low, pay on time, and don't get into a law suit or any other trouble and your score will always get you 1st tier financing.
