This is seriously the stupidest recall ever... maybe a harbinger of a litigous society suing itself into oblivion.

Their original "fix" was to hack a chunk off the floormat and ziptie one end to the seat frame. Too bad they couldn't just install a brain in the owners' skulls.

PS: yet another supply shortage of Toyota trucks and SUVs means the ridiculous resale values are driven up even ridiculously higher.

2 year old Tundras with 40-50000Kms are selling here for only a couple grand less than brand new. It's either that or wait 4+ months for a new one.

My understanding is that the floor mat 'fix' did not work thus the chance of a real issue vs morons is quite high.

I haven't followed that closely but my understanding was that the accellerator would hang up on the floor mat if the floor mat came off its hook. Maybe there's more to it?

edit: just noticed, none of the vehicles identified are made in Japan... all are from Canadian and US factories. Maybe the Japs are still greasing the linkage with premium whale oil.

Snap for owning a Tacoma that is not on the list ... and it was built at the NUMMI plant in CA. Though my truck has dual hooks built into the floor to secure the floor mats.

I don't think so. I took a look at mine and thought the recall was a bit silly as well.

The letter I got in the mail for my 2008 tundra said something about people using aftermarket floor mats. Does the word "duh" come into play here? If you get in and jam it up under the gas pedal.....well thats your own fault.

I am more curious as to the rust issues that have been popping up all over toyota forums. Premature rust that is causing spare tires to fall off, brakes to fail, things like that. I have not had these issues myself but do notice the rust taking hold quite sooner than I expected. But I also live in Michigan.

That seems to be a huge issue with the previous generation Tacomas, with Toyota buying back a number of them based on excessive frame rust.

Local news was reporting that Toyota may be having an issue with the electronic drive by wire system although they also mentioned the floor mat thing.

The local Toyota plant is taking a one-week shutdown. The news here is that a local Subaru plant is affected as well but no reason was given as to why. I didn't think Toyota and Subaru had a connection.

Yes - there's a little more to this than pedals sticking on floor mats.

    different issue entirely.

I took my mom's chevy to get an oil change today and when I got back in they left a free copy of USA Today. front page had an article about this recall. Its a problem with the pedal assembly from independent outside supplier CTS.

we still have the recall on the floor mat thing as far as I know. I just threw some rubber mats over the carpeted mats for the winter. guess I'm even more unsafe than before. but mashing the gas pedal to the floor in my little 4 banger really isn't gonna make it go all that much faster anyway so there's no point.

heard about that on the local moto forum. its the older generation Tacomas (don't know about Tundras as I didn't pay that much attention). They are replacing the frames on affected trucks. basically if you have a rot hole in the frame you can fit your fist into then you get a new frame. I'm not sure they are doing the buy back thing anymore. One of the guys just had his frame done, said the place had a few rusted out frames out next to the building.

Hard to avoid the issue here in auto-rich Indiana. Just learned that CTS is based in Elkhart and, according to a local news report, has only heard of a "handful" of incidents and that Toyota has not officially notified them of any issues relating to their equipment. Take that for what it's worth.

Regardless, their stock is starting to fall.

yeah the article said they found 8 bad pedals out of 1.5 million that they checked.

Sitting around in the break room at the surgery center today one of the scrub techs started talking about how her car is one of the affected vehicles. I wish I could accurately describe how incredibly DUMB the conversation became in regards to this thing. It was eye opening to listen to a vehicle discussion taking place between a bunch of people who are lucky to be able to find their own gas cap, let alone a dipstick.

Apparently it is more serious than just the floor mats that they were initially admitting. I have to take back my original comments.

This shit is going supernova... Toyota dealers are frozen from selling the affected product lines and now rental companies across north America are de-fleeting and dumping their Toyota product.

I would not want to work for Toyota right now. Damn!

    No shit.

8 in 1.5 million. That is a pretty damn low defect rate, but it sounds like this is more significant than it may appear.

I checked out the floormats on my 2008 Tundra, just to be on the safe side.

Imagine my surprise when I flipped it over, and it said "Fatta da Aprilia."

Sounds like a great time to pick up a smoking deal on a barely used rental car. Just get in the habit of wearing your bike gear whenever you drive anywhere.

Toyota had better come out with a straight and plausible answer soon. That story is product/corporate disaster.

when I was sitting at the Chevy dealership and heard about this recall on the tv they had one video of someone driving and some audio that I can only assume wasn't actually from the video. the lady in the video was on the phone really scared saying their accelerator pedal is stuck and they have no brakes. I almost laughed and yelled at the tv saying, "you have no brakes because you left it in drive while trying to brake at 70mph and heated the shit out of the brakes"

I was just discussing dumb friggin drivers with a friend of mine. She informed me they just passed a new national law outlawing truck/bus drivers from talking/texting on their cell phone while driving. We both really think professional drivers are the ones they should worry about less. They should be making the common driver learn to be a better driver rather than making stupid laws that don't actually fix anyone's lack of driving skills.
