Oh man- Prius brakes questioned; Toyota probe expands - Yahoo! Finance

Wozniak out saying the cruise control runs away on his Prius is not good either.

This is the equivalent of a run on the bank for a manufacturer, and damn does it suck when it happens. These things take on a life of their own...this will damage Toyota for years.

I've been wincing all day. When the situation gets out of control, these things are what happens. Toyota is totally screwing up their communications which is allowing others to tell the story for them to suit their own purposes.

When we have a issue/recall there are normally computers or something of that cost/complexity we have to fight/sue each other over. Our name only very rarely makes the news, and only on trade related sites.

Millions of cars, the MSM and politicians?

Didn't exactly help out the already tumbling stock price...

I saw the soundbites on the new last night from the government d-bags about how Toyota was slow to issue the recall and now they want to levy a fine on the company etc, etc. It looks like the government has a new crusade. It reminds me of how the FDA made it their mission to wreck Schering-Plough back in the early part of this decade. It caused lay-offs and stock devaluations for years.

And that's what really concerns me about this is that our gub'mint has a vested interested in not only GM, but in all the domestic automakers. So there could be political motivation. But never mind the fact that all of the foreign automakers have multiple plants here in the states.

Hell, my Tacoma was built out at NUMMI by American workers.

Well, almost all the camrys and carollas affected by the recall are also made by American workers out in the midwest. So they would just be shooting themselves in the foot.

I think this is just more Capitol Hill blustering to get on TV and make it look like they are doing something... it takes the attention off of all the other real problems we have that they should be dealing with.

The NUMMI plant is currently UAW.(they've been in and out over the years) They have a big clubhouse across the street.

The plant also is slated to close...

Yep. I was going to add that the only unionized Toyota plant in the US was NUMMI, but it's closing to move to Canadia.
But I'm sure that has nothing to do with the political games going on. Nothing at all.

I'm pretty sure it had everything to do with GM not having the cash to keep paying Toyota to stay around. It was included with the large round of factory closures when they went tits up.

Not to mention the land it's on it worth its weight in gold, even after the superfund size cleanup.

It was just GM pulling out and leaving Toyota to make their own decision. It's Toyota's most expensive per unit plant in the nation (probably NA).

The Bay Area still hadn't recovered from Dot Bust when this recession hit. (and I'm sure Toyota still remembers the sting of the Longshoremen strike that shut them down back then too) There is a crapload of empty space over there that is not NUMMIs and still not developed, very high local commercial vacancy and it's not really a desirable area, so they'll probably just do OK on the land...especially considering it might be nearly superfund contaminated...were I to bet, they'll lose money shuttering it.

For reference, Union City's foreclosure rates have been the highest in the Bay...

Anyone else surprised there aren't Lexus' involved in this? They do share a lot of parts....

So now Toyota is admitting that the hippie-mobile brake problem is of their design, their software code. They claim they already changed the code on current production models and are considering a recall.

Question:
How are we going to blame this on American drivers and American engineering/distributors?

TOKYO (The Borowitz Report) – Embattled automaker Toyota today said that despite problems with accelerators and brakes, the cup holders on its most popular car models were “perfectly safe to use.”

“Feel free to enjoy the beverage of your choice and know that you can rest it in one of our cup holders with confidence,” said Tokyo spokesman Hiroshi Kyosuke. “Our cup holders are world-class.”

But Mr. Kyosuke’s upbeat comments about Toyota’s cup holders were undercut somewhat later in the day by congressional testimony from Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

“You should only feel safe to use your cup holder if your Toyota is parked in your driveway,” Mr. LaHood said. “At 80 miles per hour, the cup holder becomes a rocket launcher.”

I was at the toyota dealer today getting the wife's FJ serviced and talked to the service manager. They have inspected hundreds of vehicles and have yet to find a single one with the issue.

8 in 1.5 million was one of the numbers.

To have a good chance of finding one you'd have to look at more than 200,000.

I've chased problems with single digit PPMs for Japanese customers before. It'll damn near drive you crazy, the mere act of looking can trigger a response that big...
