Some people put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator to partially cover it to help the engine retain heat in extreme cold.

The newer vehicles I've owned the past several years require lighter weight oil, so they start easier in the cold, no surprise there. Of course, I haven't been skiing in Vermont in several years, either. My old Toyota has 10W40 oil and it was difficult to get it to crank when it was in the teens (F) and lower. I swear it used to be colder here, too, back in the 70s. My Dad had some of those block heaters, even in the garage. I don't see a need.

The ~10" of snow we had here last week is mostly gone. It warmed up and has been raining, so now we have flood warnings. Our yard is like a sponge and has a lot of standing water.

No snow, of course. But dang its been cold. No seriously, mid 20's that is until about 10 AM, then its AWESOME and it would just be wrong not to take advantage of it.

Statistically it was colder in the late 60's early 70's as that was when the panic now crowd was declaring a new ice age was upon us.

Mine came with the cold weather kit, a bib and a block heater (allegedly). The bib is still in the factory packaging. I don't even know where the plug is.

I remember visiting relatives in Prince George years ago and wondering (aloud) what the outlets on the streets were for. New stuff for a Cali kidd.

I can't remember, yours is an 04 GMC right? I'll buy that cold weather stuff from you if you don't want it. I can't find it anywhere.

It was so cold here today that on my ride home (yes, I still rode to work), my blinkers wouldn't blink. I think the relay is frozen...

'02, think I'll keep it though. Long as I can keep my wife from throwing it away. (I've had to fish it out of the trash twice!!)

How cold was it to cause problems like that?

It's regularly around freezing here, high 20's to 30's in the AM, never a problem.

    Cool, I'll keep looking...

23F on the way in, never got above 30F.

It made it all the way through last winter so I'm hoping being in the garage and warming back up will give me an idea what happened.

My wifes Nissan won't auto-cancel the turn signals anytime that it drops below 0. The E-brake warning light also stays on anytime it's below about -5. So pretty much for the last two weeks straight.

There have been huge pile-ups all over the state this afternoon as snow came down on top of already wicked slick roads. It really made a mess tonight. Luckily I'm on a rotation where I'm only commuting 3 miles a day. It's been nice but tomorrow I have to drive to Omaha. The freeway spent part of today closed. I'm a little nervous.

Well I just got an email about an hour ago that schools are closed tomorrow.

It hasn't even started snowing yet.

On the way back from picking up the kids, we stopped at McDonald's (because I'm a terrible single parent and forgot to put out something for dinner tonight) and we saw the first "Truck in a Ditch".

Tomorrow is going to be awesome.

Here's my train line advice at the moment:

"Advice to Thameslink route customers: until further notice, we recommend that Thameslink route customers do not attempt to travel. Due to the severe weather conditions we cannot guarantee a Thameslink route service today. The situation is not anticipated to improve in the near future. Please keep checking this site for updates. "

Normally the trains run 24/7, but this morning the first train through was 0825 and you can imagine how crowded that was with 90 minutes' worth of commuters waiting. They said the points and trains were frozen from the unsually low temperatures overnight (reached -10C).

TV just showed the first snowflakes in the area.

I'm putting the over/under at 7 cars in ditches with 1 overturned by 11am.

-15 in my truck this morning on the way to work. Business as usual. And my Tacoma ran like a top. No weird abnormalities with the cold. I love my Toyota.

We had absolutely terrible weather overnight and continuing right now. It only snowed 7" but it's blowing 50+mph all the way across Nebraska and Iowa. I have to get in the car to drive to Omaha in an hour. I can hardly see my car that's parked in front of my house. It's normally a 1:45 trip. I'm putting the over/under at 5:10.

Started snowing yesterday afternoon here, about 4-5 inches. They've reported about 40 accidents. Wind chill is supposed to be about -30 F tomorrow.

1/4" got the post closed. And when I was trying to stay to finish up some loose details I was ordered to go home.

Well it only took 3:15 to get to Omaha. We were never over 45mph. At one point while going uphill GPS was saying 45mph, speedo 65...that was exciting. The roads really were bad and the wind was amazing.

It's going to be -20°C tonight, extraordinarily cold for England.

Oh, and by the way, was it William Blake who described us thus:
