Who is the best home security/monitoring provider?

Thinking of upgrading, clean slate style. Just curious what you all have dealt with and who is good/bad/avoid at all costs/recommended.

So far I only have ADT & Broadview that come to mind. There is a local company that I've dealt with at my old job that was pretty good, but not really sure if this is the kind of thing I want to go with giant company X for my business or a smaller local company.

It will be a cellular primary system now, that much I am prepared for, and honestly - cost isn't really a concern here (Well provided its ~<50$ a month or so, but I didn't see much above that when looking).

Thinking of doing all (house & garage) doors/windows, interior rooms/basement with pet-safe motion sensors as a secondary. Will be monitoring fire, security, and probably CO. Anything else I should be considering? (or should write off before I start).
...or is the common thing to have them come out to install it and then when they leave you go and add on your own sensor banks?

I used to install automation stuff, and could easily do my own system but much like the yard project earlier this year - it will get done if someone else does it .

Any input appreciated....oh heck I'll skip the poll

Just to be clear - in case this was going to turn into a Glock/Sig/Mossberg/AR discussion, I'm all set in that area (at the current time).

I just got something in the mail from ADT about free system and installation with a subscription. ($900 value?) It didn't say the cost pr month or how long you had to do it for. I've been thinking of doing the same. My dad has had ADT for several years now. He's never complained. Personally I'd rather have a big dog with big teeth but MrsSilver wants some stupid nice dog...

Yeah it was weird, I called them today to invite them to come over and check it out/make recommendations. Instead they wanted to schedule an installation . Wtf...I said, uh I'm all set...need to speak to a few more places first. So they finally agreed to send someone out. Monday afternoon. Guess they aren't too busy...

Though on the phone the lady told me to alarm 2 doors and have 3 motion sensors installed and it's a done deal. I said "thats a little thin, how much for the windows and two more zones of motion?" to which she replied "oh you want to make it like fort knox?" great job on the upsell.

Yeah the paper I threw away said 2 doors and a motion sensor. I thought the same.. that's it? My reaction was what about other doors and windows.. and motion sensors in the basement? If you are going to do it do it right. I know they can do it because my dad has more than the basic. Keep me posted on the quotes you get.

I had ADT come over to estimate my old house. There's a supposed discount if you're a member of USAA through the mil. The quote the guy came up with was almost twice what they told me over the phone plus they weren't flexible on the equipment packages. For instance, I wanted to swap glass break sensors for the motion detector due to our large dog. He said that it wasn't possible. I thanked him for coming and sent him on his way.

At a friend's recommendation, we went with Guardian in our new house. Great equipment, and he worked out a package that contained everything that I was looking for. Couldn't be happier.

I can attest to that. I had 2 grey geese years ago. Not even big dogs would mess with them. In fact we eventually had to shoot them as I was the only person they wouldn't go out of their way to attack.

I self installed an HAI Omni IIe for lighting and automation control, and then added security later, along with fire, carbon monoxide, and heat in the garage. There is also an iPhone app to control your HAI system from anywhere in the world, which is helpful when a friend needs into the garage and I can disarm the alarm and then open the garage door from anywhere.

I use a company called Alarm Relay that is dedicated to the do it yourselfer. 8.95 a month, since all they do is monitor. If you are comfortable with maintaining your system, they are the way to go. You pay for the whole year up front. Staff is extremely knowledgeable, and can assist you with testing and troubleshooting.

It also helps that they are San Diego local, although they will monitor all over.

I use a local monitoring service that charges $9.95 a month, or $19.95 for cellular. They converted the ADT system that was in the house for $80 and I was set. It might be worth looking into a local company over one of the big brands...

The house we bought had a company call Monitronics Monitronics Home Security Systems - Business and Home Alarm Systems

We had a ton of trouble with the contracted install service but I cant really blame that one the company.

I took a day off to have the guy come and swap everything over to our name and reset all the key fobs and codes. He was also supposed to teach my wife how to use it.
4 hours later he hadnt gotten the thing to call into the company directly so he gave up and walked off the job. I called the alarm company and they sent someone else from the same company out after hours. ( after 7 pm) on my time and they got it working OK.

Thinking about it, I should probably test it as I dont think we've ever had a false alarm.

Well, after reading a lot of crap online about different services systems, etc. we handed the ADT guy a check.

Since it's a security system, broadcasting the details of it on the internet might be sort of useless, but I'll say it's not the 499$ special and they typically offer you 10% off and if you hem and haw they go 15%. The price was satisfactory at that point so I stopped digging.

I'll update this thread with my other experiences as this progresses.

One thing i forgot, after digging around they seem to be the only company that seems to have this (or advertise it at least):

ADT is the only alarm company to have "line swing", meaning, if there was a catastrophic failure at a monitoring center, you would still be safe. ADT will not miss a single alarm call, they all get rerouted to another monitoring center. Federal background checks are performed on employees, monitoring centers are locked down like Fort Knox. There is a reason the goverment trusts ADT with their accounts.
Though it seems logical any alarm system/monitoring co. would offer such a thing, there is no kind of guarantees based on it...who knows?
