One of these days they're going to drive it over the cliff again, maybe Google will be the only one in a position to rescue them..

Those of you with an android device, or others too, need to go to the market and get pdanet, then swing by June Fabrics PDA Technology Group and get the corresponding computer setup... Seamlessly tethers the droid to your laptop. And according to my buddy who is a VZW tech, Verizon cant stop it unless they stop all data use on the droid....

What are the advantages to this? Sorry, I'm a newb at this smart phone thing.

Tethering simply gives you mobile internet on a laptop so instead of playing with a small, mobile-sized screen and keyboard you can do your thing on something bigger.

Sweet! So no extra fees for an internet connection for the lappy. I'm on it.

Rest assured, they will catch you if you overdo it. Excessive bandwidth usage will get your account flagged for investigation. Using it every now and then in a pinch shouldn't be an issue, but if you try to use it as your internet connection replacement on your laptop, you'll probably get caught.

At home I just use my wireless network for the laptop from my ISP. It would be cool to have it fro the laptop in a pinch while on the road.

Thats what I did on my old VZ stuff and it was fine.
Once it started getting into gigs a month I decided an aircard was in order...

FWIW, Epocrates is out for Android OS now.

Yep, still the deal breaker. As it stands right now I don't ever have to connect to anything to use Epocrates. I can connect to WiFi with my PDA once every couple weeks and do a full Epoc update in about 60 seconds.

You could always buy an iphone and pay for the data plan and just not get to use it most of the time...then use WiFi still

So has it been decided if VZW will allow the Eris to upgrade to Android 2.1 or 2.0 or what ever? I hear I should be allowed to upgrade soon.
I think the Droid is kinda clunky and way more than I need. But the OS is that much better than 1.5 that it would be worth it.
If only the Iphone would come over..

-
Just called VZW and I am both out of contract and ready to upgrade.
I'll have to talk to NH about pricing out VZW and AT&T..

The iPhone is betamax and Android is blu-ray, so it really doesen't matter to me either way .
Don't know about the Eris, but Motorola will be bringing ALL current android devices to 2.1. I recall hearing HTC was doing this with the Eris /MyTouch as well...just not sure when.
2.1 *update* was supposed to be dropped to upgrade a few weeks ago until the featureset came out in an announcement and there was so much griping about it that it's been pulled back by Google for a few more fixes, at least IIRC.
Awful lot of rumor in there, I'll have to purchase based on fact.. which kinda sucks, cause an Eris with 2.1 on VZW wins, but an Iphone beats the Droid..
-

From what I've heard, the ERIS "should" be getting 2.1 at some point. That's as good as I can offer right now.
As far as the iPhone goes, I'll say this:
I heard an offhand comment from someone that I can best describe as middle management level VZW that "he would not be the least bit surprised if VZW had an iPhone on the shelves sometime in the latter part of this year."
It was not an official or unofficial statement of any sort but more of an opinion from somebody who may or may not have better info than I do. Take it for what it's worth (which is next to nothing, really).
Pricing between AT&T and VZW is going to be nearly (if not) identical. Data plans ARE identical. Calling plans might vary slightly here and there.
-
I don't see Apple going to Verizon until they have LTE lit. Since VZW is planning on doing that about a year ahead of AT&T if memory serves me right, it makes sense that going into 2011 the iPhone will make an appearance.

Totally agree on the rumor portion. This is old, but gets the point across:
Verizon confirms HTC Droid Eris to get Android 2.x update – Android and Me
I think you can expect a 2.x update for the ERIS. The droid (Moto) is definitely getting 2.1.
If you remained on VZW would you be interested in an all-touch Droid?
-
I HATE my bb, so I wont be waiting for the Iphone to come to VZW..
Prices are a family plan for my wife and I. Pretty big difference in the prices down.
VZW - 190.97 a month no activation fee
1400 minutes, 500 messages on both phones, insurance, data
For Eris you get one phone free if you sign a new 2 year.
So thats 79.99 up front
For the Droid you also get one free
so thats 199.99 up front
AT&T 179.99 a month $62 signing fee
1400 rollover minutes, unlimited text, data plan.
2 Iphone 3GS's $199 each plus tax
$422.88 at signing

hey with VZW, how many numbers do you call?
With VZ, if you're doing a F&F plan, you can now get 10 numbers (each line IIRC) that it's unlimited calling to...so depending who that is (or if you're calling other VZW people) you could drop to the 700m plan maybe.
Also, that sounds like you're in the unlimited everything territory there (on VZW) am I just not up on my rates? I thought they went down...about 200$ for unlim data/voice/text on 2 lines?
Sidenote: have you upgraded your BB to the latest and greatest code? they have fixed some things that were sluggish on the older devices.
-
I just chose options that seemed similar. I did not see an unlimited everything plan offered.
I hate the BB because the hardware is junk. I've had BB's for 2 years, Im on my 5th phone.. Mostly because the buttons stopped working or the trackball stopped working.
I've had 8830's and 8330's. My ipod touch that I admitedly dont use everyday has a screen protecting film on it and its nearly perfect.. I bring it to work with me and connect it to wireless and do all kinds of stuff on it.

I will check in a few unless NH is watching, I swear I just built an unlimited all plan on VZW 2 weeks ago, just comparing.
I am shocked to hear that on the BB's from my perspective, I always know they had problems with their balls, no pun intended but were easily fixed.
One nice thing about the droid (Moto) is it's the first phone I have owned where the display is finally scratch resistant. I tried a screen protector for a few (I was trialing it so I said ok sure) but it is not needed. Droid display is build using Gorilla Glass.
I can feel your pain on the keyboard adding some size to things. I've never been a fan of touch-only devices and probably never will be, so for me it was a prereq. After using Android for awhile now and realizing it's not as weird as Apple's typing stuff is, I could probably go all-touch.
If Moto doesen't release a touch-only version of the Droid on VZ this year I may be considering an Eris for the wife in a few months.
